  1. You can always buy a large lot of Atari games on Ebay, play them, pick the ones you want, then sell the leftovers (or duplicates) on Ebay as a lot again.

I have done that numerous times just to pick up 5 or 6 (out of 50) that I really want, then I swap out the nicer looking games for my rattier titles.

I have a couple hundred titles, but of them, my personal favorites (and I'm not necessarily typical) to play are:

    Adventure

    Superman

    Enduro

    Phoenix

    Midnight Magic

    Video Pinball

    Donkey Kong

    Robot Tank

    Battlezone

    Adventures of Tron

    Towering Inferno

And occasionally, I like to run through Jungle Hunt and Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel's Castle.

Personally, I've grew sick of playing Missile Command, Space Invaders, and the Pac Man games as a kid (I played them so much), but you might enjoy those a lot too.

The nice thing about having a large selection of games is that you can always pop something in when the mood hits. I got into a kick playing Hangman on the Atari for awhile.

  2. I skipped both Turbo and Quadrun because they were not generally available (at least in the USA, re:Quadrun). I think there was another one that slipped my mind I forgot to review simply because I did not have the cartridge and I forgot it existed (I cannot remember the title for the life of me). Think it was an off-brand racer. You may notice I showed boxes and some of the catalog covers that the titles appeared in, along with the gameplay. Since I didn't own it, I did not review it.

  3. The games work fine when I hook up to the regular TV. For recording purposes, however, I hook up to the computer via a USB to component/S-Video Tevion unit. Of course, this is something the original game programmers would never have dreamt of dealing with, so the glitch issues are really incompatibilities with my equipment setup and not the fault of the game (though admittedly they are errors in the code).

Still, a more important question may be, "Why do I feel the need to create a YouTube video for EVERY Atari game cartridge I own...isn't that a little obsessive/compulsive?" To which the answer would likely be, "Yes, yes it is." ;)

Oh, and thanks so much for the link to Gorf! I'd give you a laurel, and a hardy handshake if you were here right now!

  4. Plugging the RF cable after power up does not work for me (I've tried that).

I have gone through about 100 games; so far I have only found a handful that do not work in this hookup.

I've wanted to maintain actual controllers (I do not have the joystick to computer adapter for use with the Stella emulator), so I have been trying to work with my actual Atari. I have the Harmony ROM cartridge as a backup if the individual carts experience errors, but if the game is coded poorly, it does not help without a code-fixed ROM.

Oh, just found out that GORF bugs on startup. Now that is a bummer; I like that one.

I appreciate your bug fixes :)

  5. First, the setup...

I have a modded Atari 2600 Light Sixer outputting composite and S-Video.

I have a Tevion USB Adapter which takes S-Video, Composite, Cable, and Left/Right Audio channels as inputs and carries the signals into the proprietary software "Hypermedia Center."

The system works great for every game I have tried EXCEPT Adventures of Tron.

I have Adventures of Tron on an actual cartridge, and I have the ROM on my Harmony cart, so I have tried it both ways, and both ways lead to the same results.

The game fires perfectly. The flash screen shows nicely.

Then, when I tap the joystick and Tron falls along the center beam, PICTURE FREEZE. Total video signal lock. But I still hear my movements and any collisions.

This happens both in S-Video and with composite cables.

I have tried unplugging the cables with the game still running, and the video signal still refuses to work.

Any ideas, suggestions, or even a reason why this is happening on this particular game?

    -Keith

P.S. I have attached a video file, but it instantly stops during the Tron "falling" sequence.

  6. The "After" screenshots are in this thread:

As to ROM, there was one floating around somewhere; someone may still have it. I do not think I do at this time. I will research it.

Key Differences between this and classic Adventure:

    1) Enhanced Graphics, including flippable redesigned dragons, bat, chalice

    2) A sword that changes directions with you as you move

    3) The bat now resurrects dead dragons in games 3 and 5.

    4) Pause feature with B&W/Color Control

Factoids: 100 Cartridges produced. 5 autographed numbered copies. Over 95 copies were produced with boxes (including the autographed copies). Game released with instruction manual.

  7. It has been awhile since I posted in this thread, but I wanted to give a quick update.

Another Adventure had a release of 100 cartridges. Over 90 have now sold out. I am auctioning off a series of 5 autographed/numbered cartridges on Ebay. Once those are gone, I will still have 3 cartridges that I simply do not like the condition/look of the plastic cases (discoloration, one has a name etched into it, etc). I may attempt to change these cases on my own and relabel them; I have not decided. Regardless, the line is basically done, the availability will soon dry up, and everyone who has a cartridge will be one of the lucky 100 to own a very rare game. I hope you enjoy!

I want to thank everyone who supported, encouraged, and assisted me in developing this game.

  8. Something that should be taken into account in this whole discussion is the cyclical nature in all of this...

In 1978, I was 10 years old. I got my Atari for Christmas and it was the coolest thing in the world. There were only a handful of games available, and I wanted every one of them within specific sections of the catalog.

1983 was 5 years later. I was 15. To be honest, video games took a backseat in my life. 5 years later, there were no major game advancements with the 2600 line to be spoken of by that time. Everything was a clone of something else. Every once in a while, you would get a game that really set the bar higher, and everyone wanted to play. I remember when Pitfall! came out and everyone wanted to play that for a while. Certain games pushed the Atari in different directions it had not been pushed 100 times before, but most games by this time were re-treads, and who wants to spend $40 on something that plays almost like Pac-Man, or almost like Pheonix/Demon Attack, or almost like Star Voyager/Star Raiders/Starmaster/etc.

You can look at modern video games and see where games have lived up to the hype (Skyrim, Call of Duty) and where games have fallen flat. Every company in the world wants the next multi-million dollar game, so they produce and produce, but there can only be one "Angry Birds." Same thing happened with Atari. Everyone wanted to make their millions in computer games, so everyone started making games for the Atari.

When a market becomes saturated, and the people who the system was originally marketed to grow up and turn to something else, and now home computers are entering the scene, it is easy to see why many companies lost their shirts.

Everyone wants to make money in the market. The problem, however, is most investors jump in just as the interest is reaching the zenith. Once that happens, it can only plateau before it starts to slide. Then everyone loses their shirt.
