  1. I got the replacement motherboard, board didn't work. But through swapping I found the original problem with my Atari 800XL is ANTIC was dead. Also found the new motherboard (which was getting a green screen) had a Dead CPU. I may try to get replacement chips and toss the board back on eBay. For now, I can play Frogger. Thanks!
  2. I got my copy of Star Raiders today. Still the same result - nothing but a deep green screen. Looka like the machine is hooped. I found someone selling an Atari 800XL motherboard on eBay that they said came from a working machine, socketed ICs and everything. I'll work on the system more once it gets here.
  3. The pins on the Sega Cable are the same except the Composite line on the cable matches the Composite Luminance pin on the 800XL(N.American), and not the straight composite. Older monitors like the Commodore's use two separate cables for the Composite (Chroma/Luma) where the single cable has the signals mixed. I think Luminance controls the brightness and Chromanance controls the colour. Basically, if you used the Commodore/Atari monitor cable on the 800XL, and plugged the Luminance line into the yellow Composite on the TV, would it get a Picture, except only in Black and White? Or would I run the risk of cooking something on the TV, Atari or both?
  4. That sounds interesting. I may check that out, however as for a Composite cable, the closest thing I have is an AV cable for a Sega Master System/Genesis 1. (I also have a Commodore Chroma/Luma cable but my 1702 monitor is broken) I checked out the wiring diagrams, the Sega's Composite line matches the 800XL's Luminance output, otherwise the pins are the same. Now, here's my question - would using the Sega Cable on the 800XL actually show an image on screen - only it would just be Black and White?
  5. Are all Star Raiders carts created equal, like will all of them act as Diagnostic carts per se? Just wondering if there's anything specifc about the carts I should be looking for when trying to find an inexpensive Star Raiders cart that may help, like a different Sticker, or number stamped on it...
  6. That makes sense, and I guess that would mean that if Star Raiders works, then that would rule out CPU/PIA/MMC/ANTIC and RAM and there could be something wrong with the OS chip - which I already found was covered with very black tarnished pins, cleaned up, and to no effect. I may just find one, I want that game anyway. The games I have now are Pac-Man, Centipede and Frogger. Also, I'm from New Brunswick, Canada.
  7. The Cartridges came in the mail today, still nothing on screen. I'll have to somehow obtain a parts machine to see what I need for parts, which won't be for a bit yet. Loose Translation: Drat. Thanks for the help!
  8. Power supply is putting out 5.17v DC, it seems to be OK. I checked the chips, none are getting really warm. There's no audio at all, silent. I was testing the unit on an LCD TV, but I've moved the computer to a CRT TV, and the colours more of a Deep Red/Maroon (with the occasional yellow bars/screen) instead of black. I guess I'll have to wait until the Carts arrive before I can do anything else.
  9. I opened up the console to take a look at the seating of the chips. I got lucky and have one with Socketed ICs. I grabbed my IC puller and gently pulled up on each RAM chip and the larger other chips on the board, and pressed them back in, just in case there may have been something poorly seated or a lightly corroded contact. I also pulled every RAM IC off and switched them around to see if the RAM test would pop up. The 800XL still does not boot up but now more often it's booting to either a Yellow screen with black borders on the sides, a screen with vertical yellow bars or flickers between a few different mainly yellow screens before going blank black. Possible bad ROM? Could it still be RAM, and anyone think it might boot a Cartridge if inserted? (I have some games on order)
  10. [quote name='orpheuswaking' date='Tue Feb 15, 2011 11:54 AM' timestamp='1297785282' post='2210604' When you say video cable, are you talking about straight up RF? also is your TV on the right channel (there is a channel switch on the rear of the 800XL for channel 2 or 3 - set accordingly) When you turn on an 800XL you should get a blue screen with a ready prompt. Yeah, straight up RF output to channel 2. Same no display on screen if I set it to Channel 3. I should mention the power light on the unit comes on, and the screen blinks on the TV, I can tell theres a signal getting to the TV, which is occasionally green.
  11. Hi there, I just got my Atari 800XL off of eBay in the mail yesterday, and the power adapter today. Now, the adapter came from a trusted source, but the Console was sold untested. I don't currently have any software to use on it or a disk drive. Now, I have it plugged in, and using the same video cable to the TV I use with my Colecovision, and when I turn it on, I have nothing displayed on screen, the screen is black. Sometimes when I turn it off and on I get either a green screen or a screen with Bars like a 2600 would get without a cartridge. My question is, is this normal if there's no built in Basic or Disk/Cartridge inserted? Or should I be cracking it open to check for bad/poorly seated ICs? Serial# is 024558 174 if that helps. Thanks.
  12. I took some more photos of the Unit. It is indeed a Heavy Sixer. I don't think I see a Channel Select hole, but it's been a while since I saw a Light Sixer, so I'm not sure where it was to be honest. The switchboard has the same Part/Revision number as Duhh001's. The main IC's on the Motherboard say 7744, 7748 and 7751. Now, I'm not sure if these are all the originals as I tried to fix this thing with chips from a Light 6 Sears Telegames. There may be a Capacitor or two out of place as I attempted replacing a few cracked ceramic caps with no luck. This information Kinda makes me feel it was built around Dec 77/Jan 78.
  13. I took a further look inside and the motherboards IC's say 7748 and 7751 on them, and the switch panel says 1977 Rev 5, so it may be a mutt or a repair - maybe the double sticker units are refurbs or something..
  14. I saw the doubled up sticker on the unit, I think I can barely make out bits of text that may be underneath it but nothing legible. At this age attempting to peel off the top sticker would be disastrous. Another thing I noticed on the unit is a sticker on the inside by the RF plug, I'm not certain if it's a Date stamp or not, I took a photo, but I do see where it says '7734'. Does that mean 34th week of 1977? (Late August)
  15. Hi, I'm a bit on the new side here, I've read stuff on Atari Age over the years, just never joined or posted previously. What brings me here is that I was checking over the list of Heavy Sixer console serial numbers, and I'm not quite certain how they work. I have a Heavy Sixer, acquired it many years ago at a thrift store, it unfortunately doesn't power on and I believe it needs to have the motherboard replaced. I tried to repair it before, didn't get it to work, and it's been in storage in my collection for nearly 8 years. However, the Serial# on it is 005887. It has the thick bottom and RF plating and does not have a channel select button. Is this a low Serial number? Just curious. -Nick
