  1. So guys...

I just finished watching this crazy movie, and after thinking about it for a bit, I realized it's very similar to the Atari VCS. You get lured in, because it looks awesome and it seems like a promising new opportunity, but then you get eaten alive:

More like 25. The Atari Jaguar's company when under in 1996.

Meanwhile, Chromebooks are getting Linux GPU support, and will do everything "Ataribox" can do, only better.

True, but he meant in the last 15 years. And since Atari didnt put out a console in the last 15 years, that makes his statement technically true. ;D

    (Its a bad joke. LOL)

Man we have another Tommy participating!

This is what us in Atari land deal with. Can't wait for Amico to come out so I have something to play and laugh about/forget that the VCS even exists.

Well assuming it even makes release before Amico that is.

Well, I was telling my friend about the whole VCS debacle just now, and he brought up one very interesting point:

This will be Atari's most successful console in the last 15 years........

    .............

......... Technically he isn't wrong. Lol

  4. You know what Atari needs to make? The Atari VCS CD module. It would use a proprietary CD format that doesn't play on regular DVD/BlueRay/CD-ROM drives and you can only use CD's pressed specifically for it. Rather than the laser reading data from the center of the CD and going outward, it should read from the edge of the CD, going inward towards the center. Then only have 1st party Atari titles on it, and only release 4 games for it in total. ;D

    That...…. would be...……. amazing. xD

……. oh, and Atari needs to make their own foreign CPU architecture for it (dual physical CPU's linked together-- one called "Sylvester" and the other called "Tweety"), so emulation for this CD add-on can never be achieved for another 60 years.

I'm not overly excited about the Amico either, but to bash the system while simultaneously being a fanboy of another system thats greatest achievement is running Borderlands 2 at 10 FPS seems a little hypocritical.

Sorry to tell you this, Karl, but my cell phone can also play Borderlands 2 and Netflix.  Also, like tacos, it exists.

And, and, the sushi i had the other night also exists. :B

Whatever they're paying for this kind of social media and outreach, it's too much. They really don't understand the market they're trying to serve, and they're flailing, badly.

I like how you referred to me as "Tommy Lodmot" xD

If the backer comments are anything to go by, absolutely zero overlap. There are only 200 people in the gameboard backers club, and the total $$ is a lot smaller, but I was surprised there's not a single question as to "hey, isn't that the guy..."

Rob has a readymade alibi ("they didn't pay their invoices") and he keeps a low public profile, so it seems unlikely to come up.

Yet another reason why I used to be so adamant that the VCS would be a good product. The people that have their names associated with the VCS project now have to live with that reputation in other projects they take on. Back then I was like, "why would anyone want to put their careers in jeopardy like that?" Lol...

I guess some people don't give a fuck about their careers (or screwing up other peoples' careers). o u o

Remember that not all of the Indiegogo sales are consoles. Plenty of people just ordered the retro-style joystick for $50. Also recall that for some reason, consoles and controllers were counted and billed as separate orders, either through greed (keep the extra shipping $), to make the order numbers look bigger, or simple incompetence (hey, it's "Atari).

Most of the sales were in the first week of the crowdfunding campaign. If you look back in this bloated thread to around the time of the campaign start, @PlaysWithWolves and I took some guesstimates until they changed the way sales were counted and displayed. Maybe he'll dig some of that up if he has the time.

I would eat a SpeakerHatTM if this thing makes it to retail shelves, let alone a bargain bin. "Atari" has stated many times that one of the reasons they used crowdfunding was to know how many they should make. They told their shareholders that crowdfunding would be used to reduce risk. That means not only using OPM, but also making no more than they are guaranteed to sell. I would not expect the existence of Gamestop or Walmart online orders to mean these will actually be in stores.

Speaking of SpeakerHatTM, I loved how they touted compatibility with that dumb thing in that post that PWW quoted so long ago. They're missing out on all the other unsung features of the ATARI VCS.

That is where I have to give the Ouya a lot of credit-- for making just shy of $10 million, they actually managed to get the system in stores for $99. I actually remember actually walking into my local GameStop, and they had advertisements for the Ouya right at the entrance.

Kinda sad that Sega puts out the Genesis Mini (their first actual piece of hardware in 20 years, and it's a mini console), and it's going to easily outsell the VCS by a huge margin.

I’m only estimating roughly around 10,000 units based on the numbers from the IG page but how does everyone feel this would compare to one of the mini consoles like the Genesis Mini or maybe a better comparison would be Analogue’s far more expensive offerings in terms of total number of units to be produced/sold?

No doubt the Flashback itself was a hit but even in its best form can’t see this hitting even a fraction of that unless it hits the $99 discount bin territory.

Oh, the mini consoles will outsell this by far. I bet the Genesis Mini will sell at least 2 million units.

    A semi-serious question.

Obviously, if Atari fails to provide anything (or, as I find more likely, basically just ships something that meets the absolute bare minimum), how badly does this hurt them? It's not like they have much "face" to lose. Goofball evangelists and casuals who don't understand when they're buying a product that says Atari, they're giving money to the zombie corpse of Infogrames aren't going to care. Most people think Atari is dead and gone anyway, right? You'll still be able to buy Atari t-shirts somewhere.

Sure, they probably wouldn't be able to pull a crowdfunding scam again... but their stock is already a joke... the company is basically just a company on paper... so what if they don't ship or ship an extremely subpar product?

It's funny you ask this actually, because this was one of the things I thought of when I was supporting the VCS. I figured back then that "whoever owns the brand already knows the brand is dead, so logically speaking they're likely going to do everything in their power to make it a relevant brand again, right?"

Logic doesn't work with every company though, that's something I've grown to learn. :P

So, according to the rumor, the soccer moms won't be able to access Netflix natively.   They'll have to use a modified browser and log on to Netflix's website to watch programs?  No icon  to take you directly to the program?  Well, that's not a nuisance at all.

This stuff was basic on the Xbox 360 dashboard, but these rocket surgeons can't pull it off?  The whole point of a set top box is convenience, and they can't even get that right.

That's one thing I'm curious about-- what's "modified" about the browser? Lol. Wouldn't it just be a standard Linux version of Firefox? xD
