  1. To quote SMSPower:

"All Game Gear and export Master System, and some Japanese Master System, games include a header which provides information about the ROM and a means to detect its validity. The BIOS in non-Japanese Master Systems requires a valid header..."

No SG-1000 games include this header, so none of the original carts will boot on a US SMS. However, they will work via flashcart, because the flashcart's own OS bypasses (or otherwise fulfills) the BIOS check. I'm looking forward to doing that when I get a Master Everdrive someday.

The other problem, though, is that the colors on SG-1000 games running on Mark III/SMS hardware are incorrect (too dark), thanks to what I assume is a design error, and there's no way to fix it -- it's hardwired into the TMS9918 video mode on the SMS. Some games look passable, others are way too dark and even become difficult to play because of it. I think I remember reading that a couple SG-1000 games were redesigned with different palettes to accommodate this, but I'm not 100% sure.

The Dina 2-in-1 is apparently the only domestic (US) option for playing SG-1000 games with the right colors. Otherwise, the options are buying a SG-1000 or SC-3000 online...or getting your friendly neighborhood programmer to port the game to ColecoVision. :D A lot of the better SG-1000 games have come out or are going to come out on the ColecoVision, and since the two systems are almost identical under the hood, the colors are correct AFAIK.

BTW, a bunch of Korean SMS games use TMS9918 mode. These were designed for the Samsung Gam*Boy as I recall (a clone of the Mark III), but when I run them under emulation, it sure looks like they were meant for the original, non-darkened palette (I have one emulator that runs them with SG-1000 colors, one with SMS colors). I assume they'll look dark on the actual hardware, but since most of these are MSX conversions, maybe the Korean developers just didn't care or weren't aware of the issues.

WOW. I think you nailed it. +2 for you sir. I'm not looking to get another system right now, as my dozen or so other systems are always "hungry" as it is. Although if I happen to find a cheap Dina, I certainly wouldn't hesitate

  2. ive been seeing more mark iii and sg 1000 version 2 systems on ebay for more reasonable prices. i picked up a loose mark iii a couple of months ago for 50 bucks (30 bucks shipping). thats really the way to go, unless you go out and find a dina 2-in-1.

I don't have a Coleco either, so a Dina 2-in-1 isn't a terrible idea. how much do those run, assuming you can even find one?

  3. Man, I stopped reading this thread cuz I thought it would be XM exclusive, I check back and carts are already shipped! GAH! Put me on whatever list there is to be on. PM sent just to be sure  .

  4. Heres the question- I know the Japanese master system (MK lll) will play the earlier SG-1000 games. however, in Japan, the carts for both of these systems more closely resemble a coleco cart than a Master system. what I would like to know is if there has ever been some manner of pin converter made that would allow you to play SG-1000 games on an american master system, or is the only way to play these obscure games is snagging a japanese system?

  5. Trying to wrangle up some money to snag a copy of Child of Eden and/or download Radiant Silvergun for my Xbox. I've got a loose copy of Shining Force II for Genesis. There is a bit of marker on the label, I didn't notice it when I bought it  . I can't seem to attach a photo on here for some reason, I will Email a pic to any interested party.

20 bucks plus a couple a bucks shipping takes her home.

  6. I have had a couple of master systems over the years, and I have NEVER been able to get the secret snail maze game to work on any of them. Everything I've read says hold A & B while pressing up on the D pad, then reset the system. Do some of these master systems (USA) not have this game built in? the current version I have boots up with just Hang-on built in.

  7. What, no love for Super Explosive Bangai-o!!!!! all of you, go play this. now. the newer ones (DS, XBXLA) don't do this version justice. Explosions! so many missles!! And I'll throw in for Capcom Vs. SNK 2 being the best fighter ever made. I'm a huge fighter fan, and there hasn't been anything even close ever since.

  8. ah I see. did you by any chance ever shop at a (now defunct) rochester game store called GameStation?

Was that the store outside the Greece Mall? I don't recall ever stopping ever stopping in.

yeah that was the one. i worked there for years, we had a lot of old school stuff. i used to just put out any "strange looking" atari games for 5-10 dollars . wondering if you had ever scored anything good off me back then, but i suppose not.

  9. I haven't seen an Atari 2600 for less than $100 on Craigslist in Rochester, NY in at least two years. I've had a little better luck in Buffalo and Syracuse, but not much.

There's a couple Goodwill's on the east side of town that sometimes have 2600 carts, but they're always commons and they're always at least $4-$5 each.

AAAAH!! you must be my Someguy!!

Seeing as how I've bought very little in the way of related items locally (within a 40 mile radius) within the last two years, probably not. I found some common Atari 2600 and Intellivison carts that were reasonably priced last weekend, but they were out near Buffalo.

  10. Are these "antique hunters" and "treasure seekers' reality shows driving any one else up the wall? they show some guy walking into a pawn shop and getting a hundred bucks for an Atari, now every one thinks there old stuff is worth thousands of dollars. Granted, the guy had a box with close to a hundred games with the Atari, but all everyone sees is Atari=100$. "boy, if the pawn shop is giving THEM a hundred for it, it must be worth THOUSANDS!!!" It's making it so the only place you can get reasonable prices is here on the forums, and forget about hunting in the wild. I'm pretty sure most of the local thrift stores put all that stuff on Ebay now, and there are at least three people on my local Craigslist trying to sell regular Ataris with a dozen R1 games for 200$ and up. Is anyone else running into this?
