  1. Soo in my never ending noob quest, i got my hands on a mint tape drive. I've encountered a couple of trip ups. I did get the one Moonbeam tape to load (Moon Vasion) but with Strike Force 99 got an error, something along the lines of ERROR I/O 54? another one of my fathers old tapes has a few programs hand written on the cassette; ASPIC 0-58, KNIGHTS TOUR 59-88, LOST RUINS 90-133, COUNTY FAIR 135-172. Attempts to load ASPIC (whatever that is) gave me an "ERROR MEMORY FULL IN 290. OK. Was unable to load any of the other files on the tape using the counter on the tape player to space where on the tape i should start it. I imagine that is what the numbers are referring to. So, figuring perhaps i need to use the Extended Basic cart, i put that in and press 2 for EXTENDED BASIC. uh oh, here is where things got really scary. The light one my expansion box in the slot where the 32K is lights up, turns off, and i get nothing but scrambled data on the screen. hope my 32K isnt messed up. I DID get a tape with "San Fransisco Tour" to load up, but i wish i hadn't. Thoughts on any of these various disasters?

  2. Alright, so i found an AC, got everything hooked up. I had two carts that seemed relevant; Disk Manager 2, and Terminal Emulator 2. Using these, i believe i was able to "test" the different components. I used the disk Manager to run a disk test, that ofcourse failed as i have no disk. However, the light turned on and it spun up. I also got to the TE 2 screen, witch i don't believe i would be able to do if it wasn't working. I just have to wait for my finalGROM99 to test the 32K. I'm still on the wait list for the 32K sidecar, as this thing is waaay to big to be practical in my game room. It is also quite noisy.

  3. Just want to say thanks for all the in depth replies guys. I don't always know what your talking about, but I DO appreciate it 😁 one of the driving reasons I dug out the ti99 was because of what a great community there appears to be. You guys are great.

  4. EXCELLENT... you have a TI RS-232 card!

You may consider contacting Arcadeshopper to modify the RS-232 card so you can use the << HDX upgrade >>.

With it you'll be able to load and run things downloaded from the Internet using your PC as a server. It'll save you a lot of money from buying old diskettes. Greg may even be able to set you up with a diskette containing DM2K and DSK2PC.

Oh jeez, I am in waaay over my head  Would this give me access to things that i could NOT run with a finalGROM99? I am a long time retro gamer who has just recently dove into Retro computers, starting with 800XL and C64. At 34, i never really "grew up" with these machines to the extent i did with consoles, so pardon my total bafflement.

  5. So the basement saga continues. I've pulled out the Peripheral Expansion Box, and i have a few questions.

    1. How do i open it up to check the components? i understand the top comes off, what secures it on?

    2. I don't have the AC, is it just a regular 3 prong AC like a i see laying around at thrifts all the time with no "box" attached? is it proprietary?

    3. What should the inside of the floppy drive look like? probable sounds like an odd question, but are you really just supposed to chuck a floppy in there and hope for the best? looks a little, scary.

  6. Putting these up for offer since I can't really seem to get a handle on what these are going for. Highest offer by Wednesday takes them. Important to note that I have no tape drive to test these with, but they are looking pretty nice and everything else I pulled out with them has worked.
    Strike force 99 TI99-4/A, moon vasion https://imgur.com/gallery/GgKYS
If any one in the Upstate NY area has a tape drive to test these out on, shoot me a PM.

I'm not looking for TOO much in trade, but i do need a 32K sidecar for my TI99-4/A, and i really love me some Atari 8 bit carts. and a few holes in my 7800 collection, the usuall hard to find suspects.

  7. When you posted the first time, you said that the TI games you remember were pretty uninspiring. (Not questioning your comments, just repeating them)

The Moonbeam Software games were all written in Extended Basic which, on the TI, IS pretty uninspiring (in regards to speed anyway...it's actually a pretty darned fine Basic otherwise) so I think Moonbeam stuff (which I personally love) will probably disappoint you if you're looking for 80's console quality gaming.

I figure a cassette drive is not going to add any entertainment value to your dad's old system since all games available on cassette are written in BASIC or XBASIC, I'm also assuming you're not going to write anything yourself for which the cassette could serve as a cheap storage medium.

Really, if you want to get excited about the 4A on-the-cheap, grab a FinalGrom99 (or find a cheap used FlashRom99 - the previous version) and a 32K card (the latter is usually readily available over at arcadeshopper.com)

That will open infinite possibilities, and give you access to nearly the entire 4A software library on an SD card or two.

And if you want to get rid of those Moonbeam games, let me know...I'd be HAPPY to take them off your hands (I'm slowly building a Moonbeam collection), so please post them in the Marketplace!!!

When i said the games i found where boring, it was just because all my father had was Minus Mission, Chess, and Parsec. Parsec is obviously awesome, but that was all. I did grab a bunch more carts from a local store, with varying results. The arcade ports i got (Pole Position, Qbert, Burgertime) where all exceptional ports, the TI first party stuff was a bit spotty. I've already ordered a FinalGrom99 from Ralph, but don't want to pull the trigger on the 32k on account of it being 70 bucks :_( I will probably sell the moonbeam games eventually, but have NO idea what a fair price is. couldnt find any comprable sales.
