  2. I just installed the IDE compact flash drive in my ADAM this weekend and have a couple of questions. First, is there something special that I need to do in order to boot the games on the #1 partition? When I go through the steps to select partition 1 and then boot the games folder see the opening screen of the cartridge copying program but then get an error message about nothing being on the media or something like that. I am able to successfully boot the games from the #2 partition by using the same method that failed with the #1 partition. The other thing that I was wondering is if there were any disk based games that have been modified to work with this device. If so, how would I go about transferring them to my compact flash card?

On another note, I've come up with a clean way to route the power cable for the compact flash board to the rear of the ADAM that doesn't require drilling any holes/splicing wires/special tools/etc. No hardware modifications at all. I'll try to post some pictures in the near future.

I have a lot to learn about how to use this drive but like what I've seen so far.

    Thanks!

  3. Thanks again NIAD for the information. I'm still having the same issue with my drive, only now it seems to be intermittent. I disassembled the drive over the weekend and noticed that the chip next to the ribbon cable on the drive board seemed to be partially unseated. After seating the chip the drive worked again for a period of time. The problem may not have anything to do with the chip itself and more with something else that is loose or not making contact. The troubleshooting continues.

However, I did get permission from ADAMcon to share his suggestions on how to repair some of the issues that these drives can have. The following information is a compilation from several emails, so hopefully it will make sense.

I described the issue that I was having and he said:

I have a drive that needs to warm up and a drive that works only cold. It is due to a needed adjustment to a potentiometer on the controller board. I used to have the drives fixed and have not personally tried to adjust them. The guy who fixed them Is no longer on the scene.......figures. There are 3 pots on the controller board and the adjustment must be very small. I believe what it does when adjusting is to vary the voltage slightly; as all computer stuff is basically voltage off and voltage on in bursts. Now that I imparted my wisdom to you, good luck. I know of no one who fixes them; although for a real computer repair person, it should be doable.

All that said, it is also possible that the read/write head is slightly off kilter. You can disassembly the drive cover, use a hex wrench to loosen the drive read head and move ever so slightly while running the drive. I have done that with some limited success on a drive that wouldn’t read correctly.

I then asked him if the drive he has that needed to be "warmed up" had the access led light up. He replied:
Hmmm.....yes, the power red light is on AND the drive light is lit. It just won’t read the disk until it warms up about 3-5 minutes. You may have blown out the power for the drive mechanism itself. Take the cover off and you will find that the drive mech is simply a normal 4 prong plug just like any ibm compatable drive. If you have a bare ibm power supply, it will have the 4 prong plug to plug in and possibly power the mechanism. Better still is to buy a little p.s. off Ebay to power a drive mech. they cost about $5. Turning p.s. on along with the ADAM and the disk drive will result in a positive power to the drive mech. IF that works, you can simply use the little p.s. and forget about the power supplied to the drive from the controller board.
Check the Technical (SK 2) tab on my webpage to check the ADAM schematic and see if the disk drive specs are in there.
The last suggestion that he made was to check to make sure that my drive cable was plugged into the INPUT port. I double checked and it was. I really appreciate the time and effort that ADAMcon put into trying to help me out. What a great guy. Thanks again ADAMcon.
Actually, I just ordered on of the CF card/IDE hard drive cards from the Adam News Network and am looking forward to installing it. I haven't given up on my floppy drive but wanted a reliable storage solution that will meet most of my needs. I'm sure that I'll be posting a question or two about the card once I start using it.

  4. Hello everyone,

My previously reliable ADAM floppy drive has just started to have a serious issue. Initially the drive seemed to need to "warm up" before functioning properly, but now for some reason it refuses to read any disk. The power led is lit but the disk access led is not. However I can hear the drive motor running. The floppy drive is a basic unmodified 5.25" 160k unit. Any suggestions on how I might repair the drive would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

  5. Selling a non-working Radio Shack TRS-80 Model I with original monitor, aftermarket expansion board, software and disk drive. The computer shows a memory size prompt, but there are additional random characters displayed on the screen. Hitting ENTER shows what looks like a BASIC prompt, but the random characters make it extremely difficult to see what is typed. The monitor seems to be working as it should. There were several modifications done to the computer by the previous original owner who bought the system in 1980, but I don't know enough about the system to describe them accurately. Also included are a 5.25" drive in a custom cabinet and a custom power supply. There is also a box of miscellaneous software and manuals included. Price for all is $100. Not willing to split up so please don't ask. I would much prefer local pickup in Green Bay, WI. but will ship within the continental U.S. at the buyer's expense. Please P.M. for additional info. Serious buyers only please. Thanks.

  6. Sinclair ZX80, ZX81, and 1000 computers. Include two AC adapters, one battery adapter, Panasonic cassette player, two 16K memopak, manuals, and software on cassette. Unable to confirm whether any of the three machines are working. Tried to connect all of them to an older tv with digital tuning and got snowy picture with something in the bottom left corner of the screen. If anyone has suggestions on how to test them further I am more than willing to try. Selling everythng as a package for $75. Not willing to split anything up so please don't ask. I will be attending the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, Wisconsin later this month and can meet potential buyers there. Would rather not ship if possible. Thanks.

  7. Hello everyone. I've decided to part with a few Commodore 64 items that I don't see myself using anytime soon. All of the items listed came from the former owner of a discount computer store from the 80's. I will be attending the Midwest Gaming Classic in Brookfield, WI next month and could possibly bring everything with me to meet with potential buyers. I may be willing to ship within the continental U.S. depending on the quantity purchased. Most items are still in their original shrink wrap with price tags. Feel free to PM me for more info and offers. If possible please include a phone number to reach you. Unfortunately I don't have a lot of time for email tag. Thanks.

    Here is the list:

  8. Hello everyone. I've decided to thin out my console collection and am selling the items listed below in one large lot. Everything has been tested and works. Some of the cartridge labels are peeling and others may have price tags/marks/etc on them. If you have specific questions on any of the items listed you can PM me. If possible I would prefer if serious buyers would provide a phone number to avoid email tag. I'm not willing to separate the lot so please don't ask. Price for everything is $200. Prefer local pickup in Green Bay, WI but may consider shipping. Also, there is a chance that I may be attending the Midwest Gaming Classic in March, so there is a possibility that I could bring everything with me . Thanks.

  9. Thanks for the additional disk image. As for the loading time difference between the DDP and disk, I'll have to give it a try to see just how much longer it is for the DDP. I own two ADAM computers with fully functional data drives. I guess that I am lucky, but I'll take your advice and limit their use. Needless to say, I also own a working floppy drive, but I am equally fearful of that failing someday too.

Ebay is always a good source of entertainment, and it's interesting to see how vague sellers are about the items that they sell. I've found all of my stuff locally and find it interesting to talk to the people who puchased the computers when they were new. The floppy drive was the first ADAM item that I owned. It was included with some other stuff that I bought about two years ago or so. The floppy drive inspried me to find an ADAM to use it with. I almost gave the drive away but am glad that I decided to keep it. As nice as it is to have the floppy drive, I would also like to have the ADAM SD drive if it ever becomes available.

  10. Now that I think about it, the DDP version of SmartBASIC that I have does lack a title screen. Well, even if the title screen and music aren't original, it definitely makes everything look more polished and provided some brief entertainment while the disk is loading. Is it just me, or does the DDP load faster than the floppy version? Thanks again for the effort.

  11. Sorry for the delay. I foolishly recycled the Windows 98 pc that I previously used to write ADAM floppies and struggled to get another suitable machine up and running. Luckily I saved the floppy drive before recycling the computer. The SmartBASIC disk image works great. I like the intro music that plays while the disk is loading. Nice touch. Thank you once again for going above and beyond to answer my questions.

  12. Thank you once again for the very detailed explanation and file attachment. I'll give it a try and report back with my results as soon as I can. Thanks to this forum, my ADAM has gone from sitting in a box to being used fairly regularly. This forum is an amazing resource! I greatly appreciate all of the help.
