Related topic: best way to clean the NES connector?
Zing replied to atarilovesyou's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yes, I did bake to dry, sorry. I meant that I did not scrub the connectors or anything. I tried scrubbing the connectors with a toothbrush once and it bent a pin. I couldn't fix it. -
Related topic: best way to clean the NES connector?

I will also say that boiling is the way to go. I have done it several times and it worked perfectly each time on systems that were previously "blinky". I did nothing else but boil the connectors. It cleans and reshapes the pins without any effort. I once tried contact cleaner (100% isopropyl) and it did nothing but leave a residue. I just use 99% alcohol and cotton swabs on my games. -
Your best bet would be a large CRT from your favorite classifieds site (kijiji, craigslist). You can still find 32-36" TVs for rather cheap.

I recall playing through the game and enjoying it when I was a child back at its original release, but I tried to play through it again last year and I was miserable. The game is jam-packed with trial-and-error deaths. Sometimes you have to jump off-screen and hope that you land on a platform. Fun. The game is so ridiculous that even the 1ups have a chance to subtract a life from you.

Why I play more Atari 2600 than Xbox 360
Zing replied to BydoEmpire's topic in Classic Console Discussion
This video reminded me of this thread: (I'm not sure how to embed youtube videos, if it is even possible on these forums.) (*edit* Oh, I see, it does it automatically. Too bad it forces you to use flash.) -
I grew up with Super NES and I am only 35. I hate to think that a gamer my age died somewhere. It reminds me of how my life is halfway over. That said, that would make you around 18, assuming this guy had his daughter when he was that age as well?

Yes, it is dangerous for me to browse Kijiji for TVs. I usually end up seeing one I want. I think my friends would murder me if I asked them to help me move in yet another heavy TV.

Wow, I had forgotten about many of these games. Reactor in particular brought back memories. I laughed at the Game Boy ad that said "graphics so real, you will forget it is a game". Yes. Those grey dots on a green screen were so realistic.

Have you tried fixing the bowing through the Service Menu? When I bought my XBR800 it had very bad horizontal bowing but I was able to fix it through the Service Menu. I wish I could. The non HD Wegas are missing horizontal adjustments in the service menu. No horizontal bow and no horizontal linearity. The HD Wegas have significantly more adjustments available. I believe they even have convergence!
-
I only have two complaints against my KV-32FS120: The geometry is poor in the corners. I have looked at three different 32" Wegas and they all have the same horizontal bowing in the corners. This is probably related to the size and flat glass on the tube. I'd love an old style vertically flat trintron, but with component and multiple composite inputs. The older trintrons seem to only have one video input. Second would be an s-video port on each input. They added it to one input, but for some reason, didn't bother to add it to the others.

Bethesda is suing the Minecraft creator

They just don't want to be embarrassed when Scrolls sells more copies than their game in the first week. -
Are educational titles for consoles gone?

Call of Duty learns 'em real good. -
Anyone whining about the online requirement didn't notice the billions of duped/hacked items in the previous two games. It ruined bnet for me.

I had a 50" Samsung and there was lag even with game mode. It also had problems with 240p. I returned it for a 50" Sony and it was perfectly fine. 480i stuff looked better on it than my Sony CRT.
-
I suspect the 3D comb filter really is not that much of a difference. It is the theoretical best for composite input, but the difference between it and a decent 3 line filter is probably very small.

I came close to buying the 40 back when it was still available from Crutchfield. I wanted a 36 this time around, but it would need four people to carry upstairs. I just sit closer to the screen instead. There are a lot of great sets out there for so little money. Most are no good for classic games though, since they upscale the image. If I had my choice, I would get the first XBR100 with the breakout box, but it is pretty rare. My second choice is the model I have.

Sony WEGA KV32FS120. It's one of the most recent 480i sets they made. It's from 2005. I actually have two of them. I picked up an extra in case something happens to one. These things aren't going to be easy to get in 10 years. The 36" would have been ideal, but those weigh 225 pounds and need four people to move. It was hard enough to move two of these 32" at 160 pounds each with two and a half people. And that was going downstairs only. I will be hiring movers when I move for sure. These sets are almost perfect. I wish they had two component inputs, but one is serviceable. They have the digital 3d comb filter for the best composite image and the service menu allows me to fix every geometry problem except convergence.

Opinions of the NES Advantage controller?
Zing replied to SlowCoder's topic in Classic Console Discussion
It was a good idea, but executed poorly. Adjustable turbo is not necessary. The slow motion was unusable. Overall, it was worse than using the regular pad. Now, the Max was a worthy controller! -
The first and fourth games are my current favorites. When I was young, Simon's Quest was my favorite. I'm not sure what everyone saw in Symphony. Sure, the music was great, like almost every other in the series. The gameplay wasn't very fun for me. There was no challenge. The game was far too easy, and if I want to play "Metroid", I will just play Metroid.

Did you read the manual? I played through Crystalis for the first time a few months ago. I made it through the game easily without knowing anything or using any external help. The manual actually contains several puzzle spoilers.
-
I do not collect boxes, but I always go for the manual. The reason I do not bother with boxes is not due to price or space concerns, it is strictly the time investment. There are not enough boxes in adequate condition. I don't feel like constantly hunting for a good box or wondering if a better condition box will come along. If I could just drop a large sum on an instant CIB collection, I would do so. For now, I am content to acquire cart and manual. This is much easier for me, as I am not concerned with manual condition. I use them for a practical purpose (to read), not display.

The CPU is irrelevant on modern systems. The bottleneck is now the GPU. Most GPUs of the same generation are reasonably equivalent in terms of functionality. I'm sure we won't be seeing any form of bit wars ever again. The CPU did matter in the pre-3D days as it handled most or all functions in software. The data bus was an easy method of guessing which system had more advanced features. We can see from the Nintendo 64 that it isn't always accurate. Although, I suspect the Nintendo was 64 bit more to satisfy their deal with Rambus than for true performance.

I am seeking a good condition Harvest Moon SNES for my five-year-old daughter and I to enjoy. I'd prefer to get the manual as well, but I will be satisfied with just the game. I am willing to trade paypal or anything on my trade list here: http://tinyurl.com/zingtrades

The buyer filed a chargeback with their credit card company. Paypal has 30 days to respond to it. I guess they had no desire to respond or the response wasn't sufficient. Paypal gets money taken out of their merchant account. They, in turn take the money from the recipient. This is to be expected. That the money was "gift" means nothing.

Consoles you bought for one particular game
Zing replied to mbd30's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I don't blame you. I don't recall why I bought a DS, but Phantom Hourglass was the game that made me not regret it.
