Hey neighbor! I'm not sure how common it is. Probably fairly common on the 20EZ's since it gets lumped in with the monitor chassis. I haven't had to cap any of my nintendo games though.
Nice to see a local arcade enthusiast. Do you go to Ground Kontrol often? My friend I just went today. The 720 controllers are completely broken (like usual) but everything else we played was working great. I went 2 hours on Asteroids only losing 1 life. My buddy dragged me away to play Joust. Anyway, I hope they get another Berzerk in there, I want to get at least in the top 3 scores.

we have two mods named Al??
ALbert and ALex, I think.

Nintendo monitors (Sanyo 20EZ) include an audio board, and yes, there are electrolytic caps on it.
So, it's common practice to put a cap kit on those boards? And can you tell me an audio board that does not have them?
-
Checking the volume know showed where the problem was I simply cleaned the pot
I picked these up last weekend. The Buck Rogers works great but needs some body work. I hope I can find the side art for the Buck Rogers. The Donkey kong Jr needs cabinet repair, console, and a cap kit in the monitor and audio board. I bought both for $175. This should be a great project for the next couple of months.

Out of curiousity, how did you troubleshoot the audio board and how were you planning on fixing it? Thanks.
The way you worded your original post I thought you were saying that you were going to put a cap kit on an audio board. I have never heard of that. Thats why the question.

After nine years of being on this forum, that was the funniest thread.
Random thoughts:
1) The letter is the best part of the find, this guy writing to Atari because he can't find particular games, I did see Starship in one of the pictures, so he did find it one day.
2) The lack of boxes is plausible. Atari 2600 fans threw the boxes out, Intellvision fans were more likely to keep them because of the overlays.
3) Nobody tried to "
Mcgrail them.
4) She talks about how her dad was crazy, yet names herself mother-in-law, likes Walmart, and says she's likes to watch. Seems a little of bit of dad rubbed off.
Cliff notes of the thread:
OP posts about his mother-in-law finding Atari 2600 collection, asks about Video Life
Skeptical forum members are skeptical
OP posts pics, forum members claim they are blurry
Mother-in-law joins forum and answers questions about the history of the collection and the collector
There are no boxes
Forum members mostly no longer doubt
CPUWiz tells Mother-in-law where she lives, Mother-in-law freaks out
Thread gets derailed and locked by Tempest, who was an initial doubter
What does "Mcgrail" them mean?

It might be easier to do a, do not have list. And label variations, which has stymied my collection for years. I pretty much have (according to this website) 90% + of every game spit out (including label variations....ugh). And all the additional hardware, I guess that would be a different topic.

I read the one place in Portland Oregon and it's not Kencade. It is Ground Kontrol. Ken House is the guy that posted the link. He is a true ass, he tried to buy one of my arcade stand ups a few years back and basically told me unless it was made of gold I could fuck off. Of course he said that stuff via e-mail after coming here and telling me what was wrong with every single game I had. Anyway F him and his Dig Dug record. I whipped his ass at Asteroids and Missile Command when he was at my house.
Rant over.

I've interacted with Ken only briefly at the CAGDC Main Tournament in 2010 and at the CAGDC Mini Tournament last fall. To me he seemed like a nice guy.
But, bear in mind that I stand on neutral ground and don't belong to any clique or get caught up in the soap operas that infest the hobby of classic arcade gaming.
However, I have read posts online and heard some things that would support your comments.
And that's all I have to say about that.

Your neutrality is completely understandable.
You should have seen the posse he came here with (my house). I had to have my G/F's daughter stay in her room. I am completely serious about that. They were leering at her like high school kids. The gaming cliques (even here in Portland) are amazingly obnoxious. I do admit that I hang with the Star Wars guy, but this Ken House actually has a fairly large following. Remember all those guys that worshipped Billy in 'King of Kong'? Sorta like that.

I noticed you are from NY (Massapequa - I'm guessing NY). I have arcade machines and when I need a repair, I have a guy who is local and reasonable (in northern NJ). I can get you his information if you end up wanting to get the machine fixed. He just fixed a number of problems on my Tempest machine and only charged me $100. Problems were all monitor related. It saved me a ton of headaches. He might charge more because you are an hour away, but he's a really nice guy. I'm sure he could refer you to someone local to you as well. PM me if you want his info.
hey I live in nothern NJ and could definitely use a repair guy

Did you end up getting the info. for that repair guy? And, if so, did you get it repaired?

Since I only collect 2600 carts. I buy a C.I.B. and a loose so I can play it. Of course that is not always an option, but it is what I try to do.

Finally found it:
Thanks for that link also. I am going to hit E-Bay and see if I can get a cheap pair. I actually like them.

So I'm 20 min from some amazing deals on some games. I mean I had bid $10 on each lot and was winning at $1.04 with 20 min left on the auction there is no way $10 should have one but its an auction. No reserve, not even a BIN. Suddenly I get an email that tells me about my bid cancellation. Ummm... I didn't cancel my bid. So I look more into this and the seller removed the items. I swear, if they are relisted I might blow my top. I really hope they get charged something extra to take an auction down like that. What a great way to rip people off. List the item, if you don't make a pile of cash on it take it down and try again later. That isn't what an auction is supposed to be like.
[/rant]
Do you have a link so we can avoid this seller?
....3 days later and I would guess the answer to my question is no. But thanks for asking.

And regarding MAME: whether it's a MAME front end or not, the 60-in-1 boards are legal to sell. Perhaps the manufacturer has a licensing agreement.
they are technically illegal to sell. the manufacturers are chinese bootleggers, the idea that they would have contacted every single manufacturer and gotten licensed games from namco, nintendo, atari, and still be able to sell the boards for a hundred bones, in direct competition with the copyright owners arcade games which still sell new for thousands of dollars and only include 2 or 3 games, is laughable. the copyright owners are not selling the right to use roms in these boards.
60 in 1 boards are chinese made bootlegs running pirated roms on an embedded MAME board. even if the roms were licensed by some miracle, the mame license clearly states that it is not for commercial use, if it were it would put them on very precarious legal standing. have you seen the instruction manual for one of these boards? the chinglish is hilarious and there is no mention of copyright of course. the 60-in-1 boards contain stolen intellectual property. they are neither licensed by the manufacturers or mame and are not technically legal to sell, at all. you cannot sell any mame based product legally, period. the 60-in-1 boards are derived from mame, and technically just as illegal to sell.
these quotes are from a MAME developer:
The lower capacity ones appear to be running an older version of MAME (0.36 era and before) that has been ported to the SH2/4 and ARM cpus found on the boards. I've been sent an extract of one of the roms from them which contains MAME-like structures with some copyright strings etc. blanked out.I've been sent partial dumps of several of these from fried boards. They contain tell-tale signs of being MAME, for example mame.cfg files, mame.dk readme, MAME romset names, disclaimer strings disabled but not deleted etc.these were going for $359 with a 60-in-1 installed, and some of the copyright holders had a problem with that...

namco currently is one of the companies enforcing their copyrights. here is the text of a recent ebay auction for a 48-in-1 they pulled:
Dear xxxxxxxxxxx,You recently listed the following auction-style listing:
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX - NEW 48-IN-1 Classic Arcade Multicade JAMMA Game Board
The listing was removed because it violated eBay policy. All fees related to this listing have been credited to your account. We also notified members who placed bids on the item that the listing has been canceled.
The rights owner, Namco Bandai Games Inc., notified eBay that this listing violates intellectual property rights. When eBay receives a report of this type of violation, we remove the listing to comply with the law.
Great post. So are we not going to see the boards for sale anymore? Anywhere?

What a nice looking game! I've always wanted Espial and have often thought the rarity here at AA was a bit low for it. It's a hard one to find just cart only.
It is the only R6 That I don't ever see on Ebay and when I do it goes for more than any other R6. Probably closer to an R8 than R7.
This is the only R-6 that I do not have a piece of (manual, box, or loose cart.). I rarely ever see it on E-bay and I get bid out of the water every time. And why is it only a R-6? It should be a R-7 at least if not more.

I did not read much other than "Replying to Help me learn to love the Atari 2600!" Here is the reason I love the Atari 2600 .............. Adventure. Simple as that. I played it at my quasi friend Toby Boldens' house when I was 12 or 13 and I have been hooked ever since. There ya go with a simple way to know if you love the 2600 or not.

Jail Break pisses me off to no end. Brutal.
I never heard of Jail break. Do you have any video links for it?
I made a video of me getting killed often.
I hate late 80's and early nineties arcade games (with a few exceptions of course). This game here is a perfect example. It looks not fun to play and very difficult. How the F does the Bazooka count as a power up or whatever? It seems your intro. firing method is WAY more effective. Yeah, this game looks pretty damn hard, but I have never played it or even heard of it.

O.K. since you have a MAME cab. you can try over and over again on the games you like to play for free. I own a dedicated Missile Command and can pretty much play as long as I want. There are TWO accepted methods of playing. One is the spray and pray already talked about and specific targeting (very hard to master) method. The specific targeting is hitting your base firing button in correlation to incoming missiles, smart bombs, etc. One missile at a time. Spray and pray is basically laying down a wall of missiles around 5/8ths from the bottom on a rainbow arc with 5/8ths being the top of the arc.
Try the specific targeting method and see how you do. I promise you if you stick with it you will eventually be able to marathon the game. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the tips. Regarding the part above in bold, when you say "correlation" I assume you mean that you roughly divide the screen into 3 vertical strips, and fire with the base that corresponds to the strip containing the target?
Sounds logical but man, it just moves so damn quickly. Another thing that screws me up big time is when my bases get hit and lose all their ammo. It throws me off every time because I keep hitting the fire button and hearing that dreaded "squeak" sound, and then I just start panicking and completely shit the bed for the rest of the level.

Yes, that is exactly right, I should have been a little more specific. Watch that movie on Hulu and do what that guy does. Honestly, Missile Command, Asteroids, Robotron, and many others are games that can be marathoned by most anyone with a lot of practice. Keep at it and I promise you that you will get better and better until one day, you will be able to play as long as you want.
NE146 has great point about the trac-ball controls, the full size stand-ups have a huge ball and in my opinion are a pain in the ass. Luckily I bought the cocktail version and it is much easier to use due to the small trac-ball. The downside is the awkward position on my wrists. I play for an hour and my wrists cramp up. I wish I would have waited for a nice cabaret cabinet, which had the small ball and is a stand up. Best combo for me. So keep playing and tell us how you are doing.

Well yeah that's the game. Try not to let your bases get hit
That being said I've always sucked at Missile Command probably because I've never been all that good with trackball controls, and Missile Command has a big fat heavy one
If you see top players play though, it's crazy how good they are, but after a point it becomes a lot of repetition and endurance.Have you ever heard of the movie "High Score" by the way? It's about some guys quest for the world record in Missile Command. Might be interesting.
I think it's for sale on Itunes too if you can't find a place to download it.Thanks for that link. I had never heard of that movie before. I will now try to find it online somewhere for free (hopefully).
edit: I just found it on Hulu.com

Its real, but overpriced..love the way its called an R10 in the auction ,it would be maybe a R8 at most.
Why the concern?
Because he said he didnt know enough about it.
Oh, shit, I did not see that part of his post. Thanks man. My mistake.

Bloody hell, I should list these.

Why screw a guy over if he can make a few bucks? If the buyer wants it he will pay the going price. Even if wiz floods E-Bay with these there will still be people bidding them up. And yes the seller either lied or did not know about this being the "ONLY ONE THAT"S EVER BEEN ON EBAY AND PROBABLY THE LAST ONE YOU'LL EVER SEE"! It is buyer beware. Simple as that, on an auction like this.
