I like DT Kofoed's goal to break 100K. I think I want to do that, too.

    .

Yeah, it's my default goal for games like this that I'm rubbish at. Took me a couple days to crack Defender, at which point I realized I could roll that one. Something about 100K psychologically eggs me on, first to reach, then to blow past. This game... yeah, that's all I'm looking to do [until I reach it, at which point I want MOOOOOARRRE].

  2. Well, here's photos of me rolling the level counter, at least [photography courtesy of Rainbow Kitty, that's why its a tad crooked and blurry :) ].

Apparently I don't have the photo of my final rolled score... but at this point in the game, I had almost 40 ships and about 20 bombs in reserve, with the difficulty set back to start, so we all how how it 'went down' [up] from there!

But, I have to show something, right? And at least I have these.

  3. Question for the Moderator:

my daughter just created an Atariage account (Rainbow Kitty ... she wouldn't listen to me...) to play in the HSC with me and her brother. There's a delay between creating an account and having permission to post in the forums. Now, she's concerned that she'll miss out on this week's contest because she can't post her scores. If I post them here, will you credit them to her, just until she can post under her own account?

If you search Rainbow Kitty, you'll see she joined on the 12th. I can guarantee she won't be bumping anyone out of first place, since she's only 8 and fairly new to retro/real gaming...

  4. Gave Wall Defender another go:

I have to say, since this one was new to me, that I really Want to like it. I do like its general concept and design. But, I keep wanting to skip through the middle of the structure to get to the other side (nope! now you're hung up), and there is decided wonkiness around the corners (sure, the innermost level is easiest to maneuver... nope! now your whole playfield is corners! Bwa-Ha-Ha!). I don't believe I have ever said this before, but this game really would work best with the never-used Driving Controller. Give me some Tempest-style psycho-spinning mayhem any day! I do think I'll give this company's other games a whirl sometime. I'm really not sure how they skipped my notice before.

Also, playing this with the kids was awesome, because we spent the whole time trying to figure out just what the heck bad guys actually are supposed to be? Weird ass sprite work going on here... must be European...

  5. Not sure, but this might be a personal best. Played it a lot as a kid, but never had the patience to get past the programming quirks and score much more than my kids have been/will be posting this competition... Breaking 100K was my personal goal for this second week, as I ramp back into competition. The HSC has exploded in number and skill since last I was a presence here!

Not sure if I have the wherewithall to roll this one, but I sense that I could, with time...

good to see you here DT...

Thanks for noticing! I've had a rough stretch, even had the Ataris boxed up while I took the family 'camping' this past summer to avoid something far worse. This week's game was a one-off emulation, but for the second week I pulled out the old 4-switch-woodie, because honestly, my kids were begging me! and now we're all competing again this season. I've gotten 5th spot in the past, but competition seems tougher now than when I left... good gaming to all!

  7. First go around at both:

    Defender: 58,400

    Wall Defender: 98,430

Again, I won't bother with pictures unless I have a chance to play more. Unboxed my Atari for the first time since I had to set in in storage over the summer, and can't find a joystick that functions properly. At least my Genesis pad is still good (though oddly enough not recognized by the Harmony menu). Still, I got my kids to play with me, and they might start posted in the HSC again, so: all in all, this is a Happy Day in the Kofoed household!

  8. I'm digging the speed vs. shoot mechanic you've got here, and who doesn't enjoy saving a city from aliens? I think the menu start effect, and the general look is solid. Details like the falling debris from exploded invader ships make it look extra classy.

That said, the "zero point" seems to be nothing more than a count-down timer at this point. If you're going for the title Point Zero, and the game objective is to get to zero, it seems there should be more than just a Pitfall-esque time limit. Is that any way to utilize the power-ups, enemy damage, or something to effect the counter? Certain actions reduce the count, others raise it? Something like that will add strategy beyond that of the standard fixed screen shooter.

Also, I figured out that your ship getting hit causes damage as indicated by the bars next to the timer, but am unsure what effect if any comes from the invading nasty thingies hitting the city shield (other than a noise). I was unsure what effect if any the blasted ship debris has (or could have) as it continues to fall.

-keep working on it and I'll keep playing it-
