Only shrink the world if you need to in order to add something truly compelling... given how fast you can gallop, emptiness is not a concern to me. I'd frankly be concerned if the world felt too small! This seems so close to finished, and there's a great polished feel to most of it. I look forward to seeing what you come up with to replace the bats.

I like the basic gameplay and concept, but it would be nice if the player sprite was anything, you know, other than a box

Oof. 29. I have a looong way to go this week.,,

I think I'm sort of at a crossroads in development. The gameplay feels mostly okay, but I've hit the RAM ceiling and I'm now wondering if I should consider sacrificing some gameplay elements for others. For instance, I don't think I can add the falling Princess mechanics without sacrificing the Bat or the Soldier. Then again, if I sacrificed all three I might be able to add a second simultaneous Dragon in the sky. What do you guys think?
Played this new demo for the first time tonight, and here's my thoughts.
General concept and execution is top notch. It looks great and controls well, with great character and enemy sprites/animation and a nice colorful playfield. Jousting on the road gives me a little trouble, but I'm sure it won't be a problem with a little more practice on my part. I particularly liked how the foot soldiers became skeletons as I progressed, and the larger dragon appears.
For what it's worth, though, I don't care for the bats. They don't look terribly interesting, don't do much, and just disappear when they die. The dragons and foot soldiers are all well designed and animated, noticeably attack the castles, and have death animations. I would axe the bats to add something, whether it's the fabled princess or not. I'm ok with only one dragon at a time for the sake of more enemies types.
First run through got me to the 5th wave.

I haven't played much in the two weeks.
Night Driver: 71
Too many assholes park their cars at that hairpin from hell!
Spike's Peak: 51000
I love how the music sounds corny while the hiker begins his climb, and then BIRD PECKS HIS FACE OFF! I've only managed to reach the summit once. Too much dying at the first screen because it's nearly impossible to hide in those cardboard boxes fast enough.
Sumbarine Commander: 755
I'm having a lot more trouble getting a high score than I thought I would.
Crypts of Chaos: 2304
This was meant to be a placeholder score until I made the time to make a serious run, but I never got around to it. Nor am I in the mood to.
Luck player # 20, I believe! Double Score all around!

Oof! Crypts has it in for me tonight!
Wandering monsters came stacked 4 deep, with 2 or 3 in almost every lair. Randomized, my ass! Clear 3 fewer levels and still almost hit my previous high score.
Now it's an hour and a half later and I don't have time to play again. Argh!

Submarine Commander: 2375.
I don't see how you all are scoring so well on this game. Every shot a hit, I guess?

Okay! Update to Night Driver: 70!!!
I think I figured it out. On the difficulty we're playing, there is that one really tight hairpin turn with the house on the corner. If you play the track enough you can kinda *feel* when it's coming up.
There's actually a much, much easier way. The turns consistently appear at the same number. The first one is at 7, next at 15, then I think 24, etc. If you pay attention, it's the same point every time.
Or, the only time the track turns left twice.

1st by season end, is starting to seem a reality! Unless it's a longer season then last year. We shall see...
Season 10, I think many people can hit the #1 spot including you oyama (you're still in range of season 9, especially your top 5 goal)
Gorfy and Frostbite have been top notch and keeping it (robot tank/frontline), Toymailman's always dangerous (now a Mac-daddy danger), and Stan is working hard and scores are flying up (spikes peak now). Jifremok is back and very tough to beat, same with Deteacher, Vocelli, DT Kofoed, Scrabbler... etc etc! Should be a very cool and violent next season. Everyones gettin' better with time.
Hoping to be back for season 10! I will, unless forces stop me.
Thanks for the shout-out
! Glad I made your cut-off in my [slightly late] debut season.-

Ok, so I said I'd post at 10K, so this is a little early... but a wizard had me in a lair and I ran out of wand AND ring, so there's nothing I could do, and it's late:
Totals so far:
Night Driver [old] - 75
Spike's Peak [old] - 80,250
Submarine Commander [new] - 2240
Crypts of Chaos [new] - 9695
Jacob, looks like Chaos is between you and me!
I believe my cumulative works up to 1,461,250 now, though I'm not sure how that ranks with everyone else's recent scores...

crypts of chaos
THANK YOU VERY MUCH, JACOB!! THE CRYPTS OF CHAOS LAYOUT REALLY HELPED ME TO IMPROVE MY SCORE!!
So I suppose the difference in propriety is posting maps halfway through the competition, rather than the second night?
Welcome oyama, and thanks to SeaGtGruff for making them

@ DT, uh what?? lol
I don't think there's a differ in propriety?,
REASON WHY IS... I just posted these Crypt maps here "6 hours" after I used them, I was mostly working on spikes peak by second day, and in 2 days I did 3 (no map runs) at Crypts of Chaos, I decided to go find and use 'em. Then I put the link down at the HSC here hours later, not on purpose days later.
People can still use them for another full week. If I was to post them 2 days before competition end, yeah then I see a difference in propriety.
No biggie... I was just recalling some debate when I posted the Fathom map early in that week's competition.

Modest bumps in 2 games tonight...
Crypts of Chaos: 5,553
Spike's Peak: 80, 250 [does not display correctly on my 1984 model 7800, but I monkeyed with the port enough to get my VCS on tonight]
I'll post new pictures once I crack 10K and 100K, respectively. No way I'm gonna hit 80 on Night Driver [seriously, WTF kind of mad skillz does that take!?!], and 3K in the [yellow?] Submarine seems beyond my torpedo range. Should be hitting 1 million combined competition score here soon.

I found maps of the 4 floor layouts of the crypts... done by SEAGTGRUFF.
It helped me with maze B and D... and got me an extra 2ks. I've already memorized
maze A and most of B myself. Still didn't make it out of the crypts though, a wizard
kicked my a**
Maze A is very easy to learn because the treasure rooms are to left then right
the whole way down, then the downstairs.
I've been using these as well, though I recommend changing the black background to white before printing them out.

Too much wine to play well last night, so I hopped on first thing this morning and finally got into the 2K club on Submarine Commander where all the cool kids are:
Having a rough hardware week, though... possibly a gremlin infestation...
The wiring on a joystick went bad, and I had to transfer pieces with another broken joystick to get one working, one of my paddle sets seems close to going now, and the left controller port on my VCS is on the fritz [not sure who in the area can re-solder it] so I'm playing through my 7800 now, which has not been modded and thus everything is pretty muddy looking on my big screen now
Thankfully none of these games have tiny fast moving things to track [ala DK Jr] so I should be okay to play. Also, Stan, you're making me nervous! These last weeks you've been groovin' hard and catching up on the overall rankings.

Improvements in 3 games today:
Spike's Peak - 57,100 [frustrating funkiness, with a death-dance-shuffle too]
Crypts of Chaos - 4287 [time=score, this'll take a looong time to really master, oh Snail-Lord]
Submarine Commander - 1575 [can't yet anticipate the fast boats by radar]
And, of course, I keep scoring 70 on Night Driver - Every Other Freaking Game I Play! - so I have hopes of adding a couple more points to my best before the competition is up [afraid this set of paddles might not survive, though]

Boy, do I play a lot more Atari these days. Broke a joystick today

Night Driver improvement: 65!

Wouldn't that picture be all the sweeter in an 8-track deck?
That is a 1975 Ford Thunderbird 8-track deck.

Well, nevermind then!

First time playing Submarine Commander: 590.
Also the first Sears exclusive I've played.
