Just in case I don't play tomorrow:
I received my cart from Ebay on time this week, and my score went up on the first go. I find the joystick is a little looser on horizontal aiming, but gives me greater control of my vertical movement and orientation compared to the keyboard. It looks more natural as well.

Worked up to 46,935... I'll post a new picture once I crack 50K.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately... work has been busy and full of distractions lately... not the least of which is the return of the NHL to the arena I work at. Looks like the games are going to be sold out for years to come.

Your efforts are appreciated regardless... and I hope you'll still be able to enjoy the NHL (yes, I live an hour from the Redwings)!

Not racing the clock for a final score tonight: I'm just not good enough!
Congrats to all who rocked this one out. Fun, tough game. I'll admit this has been in my collection for awhile without much action, since the dual joystick trouble always intimidated me somewhat. A toe on the floor works fine for smartbombs only, but I prefer being able to access both inviso and bombs with an over-under coupling (with the trade-off that the massive controller body becomes quite painful to grasp for very long, even with large hands). I really enjoyed playing the inertia of the ship, building up some momentum and a trail of baddies, then whipping around to snipe them as while flying backwards...
Given how far down the ranks I've fallen today, I'm definitely going to need that corrected score from last week for an extra point

Finally cleared 10... didn't realize my humanoids had repopulated the planet until it was too late, dying in valiant defense of what I thought was my last little buddy. Now I see how 100K+ is possible with a new round of potential bonuses.
Anyways, I'm definitely in the realm of diminishing returns now, and my double-thick joystick is producing one wicked blister on my palm, so I'm calling it for the night with another marginal improvement:

And I have to say, of the two varieties, I much prefer the title screen on Stargate to Defender II. That ship is sweet!

Shouldn't I be in second?

51,050 today. I'll post a pic if I get something good. Somehow I expect a lot of amazing scores before the week is up.
-
First night out - 39,050 - still having trouble finding a comfortable position for the second joystick. I've been experimenting with both 2600 and 7800 sticks, to no avail. I'm probably spending more time monkeying with the controls than playing the game at this point! What a week for double points : (

Any recommendations for joystick coupling?

All right: here goes my last minute effort after work to climb back into a top three finish for the first time...

6. Fall down from the left side of the screen to avoid grey clouds. But don't go down too fast.
I find a free fall along the right side of the sky screens avoids both clouds and birds, allowing you to descend as quickly as the programming allows. Following down the left side will hit birds on the lower two screens if you're in free fall.
Yeah, but I don't like to be near the right side because that's where the birds come out. To avoid getting hit by the birds on the two lower screens, move over about an inch to the right.
Hm... I wonder if there's a difference between emulation and hardware on this? It looks like you're using the real deal, and I'm still waiting for ebay to come through.

It's a masterpiece of programming with top-notch artwork, but it wasn't my cup of tea. At least I gave it a try.

I agree that technically and artistically this game is astounding. The control scheme is just so poorly designed! Push the button and use the joystick to swim... how much more convoluted could this be? And why do I feel the need to complain that flying feels too floaty? Still, glad to have an excuse to really get into this one, otherwise I doubt I could have gotten over the learning curve to really appreciate it.

(I took the picture with my phone from my netbook screen, but Windows won't import from my phone any more, so I then had to take a picture of my phone with my camera, which is why this looks like shite.)
As for the map posting so soon, here's my reasoning, for what it's worth:
After seeing the suggestion to map in another post, and realizing that the trident pieces occur in set locations, I went ahead and mapped about half the game. Then I thought, surely someone has already done this, and sure enough, they had. I've noticed that people tend to hold off on their hints until the weekend (at least), but I figured that anyone who needs the help probably needs it before the final couple of days, while those who don't need the help anyways won't use it. If people prefer a little more mystery, though, then I'll wait to post things like this until further into the week (I don't want to ruffle any feathers or fins)!
As for strategy:
1. remember that pulling down as a seagull makes you drop faster.
2. it's vital to memorize the starting cloud positions for each screen, so that you enter a new sky screen hitting those low flying clouds rather than low flying birds (or avoiding them as your fall through grey-cloud skies, if you've taken too long).
