I enjoy Hover Strike: Unconquered Lands, World Tour Racing, and Myst as well. Protector: RESURGENCE is awesome but it requires the Protector SE cart to play.

Worth streaming video on consoles?

If you are using an Xbox One you might want to try out YouTube TV. You should be able to watch your news programs and potentially save some money compared to that cable bill. I dumped DirecTV last year and am using both YouTube TV and Philo TV though I would be content with just YouTube TV. -

How do you guys play this game with the Jaguar controller? I have been playing with the pro controller but I am not finding that it helps much. I do a lot better when playing this game in the arcade with twin sticks. Do you put an overlay in and use the keypad?

It makes sense. The EEPROM data was clearly corrupted. In there you have your 3 save game slots and your sound settings. So the game starts and it has some global data it loads into memory. It checks to see if you have saved games so it knows whether to make them available for selection on the menu. Somewhere in the save data is a variable that represents the size of an array or buffer of data. Since the data is corrupted that value is bogus. The code writes junk into memory and, due to a bad length indicator, runs off into memory it shouldn't be writing to and puts junk there. The demo starts, reads a bad value from memory, produces behavior that is not consistent with the expected behavior... boom. Demo desync. Stack and heap corruption is definitely something we have to look for when debugging demo desyncs. They can be quite difficult to pin down but this one would be pretty easy based on the sequence of events that were described.

Well Doom would be the perfect game to test for this. I don't know offhand what other games would be affected by an issue like this. Any game that plays a demo in a similar manner to those id games I suppose. I think Cybermorph has a demo that starts up pretty quick.

This behavior is consistent with a demo going out of sync as I described. Consider this... if the demo has BJ pushing forward for 20 ticks and his movement rate is typically X but instead he moves at a slightly slower rate of Y, then the demo has the action input to open a door... he is not going to be at the door when that action is issued and it will do nothing. Say that after he opens the door he is supposed to proceed forward. Well you will see him reach the door and just walk into it. Then say his next movement is supposed to be to turn right and walk down a hallway. You are going to see him turn right but there is no hallway. There is a wall. So he will just be running into it. Then the demo has BJ firing his weapon at an enemy. Well BJ never went through the door, never walked down the hallway, never sighted the enemy... so now he is shooting at a wall. The demo file is playing through the correct actions but since BJs movement speed wasn't exactly correct in that initial walk up to the door everything after that is completely screwed up. That is how dependent demos in Doom and Wolf3d are on precise code behavior. Something as small as a tiny floating point precision error can totally throw a demo. It may not be enough for you to notice a change in gameplay but it matters in a demo. Sometimes the error is small and it takes a while for the demo to start showing that it is off. Sometimes something like opening a door is missed or an enemy doesn't move the way it is supposed to and kills the demo player prematurely so it's really obvious that the demo is off. Either way it indicates that the code is not working as intended/expected. I'll optimize some floating point precision away on the Xbox port of Odamex (default optimization settings on release builds for Xbox causes consistent demo problems) and record some of the vanilla demos in action. You will see exactly the same sort of shooting of walls and walking in circles that you are witnessing. In one demo Doom guy dies way earlier than he is supposed to with that particular Xbox precision error. Some ways you could see this manifest in game is that enemies could end up in slightly different spots than you expect if you have played a section many times before. Maybe enemies do more or less damage than they usually do. Same thing for the damage you do. It would be stuff like that. It's not as obvious in game at all because the player's actions act as a seed on the responses in the game. Your own movement and actions randomize the action. With my Ruiner Pinball cart it tends to go into the slot so that the errors occur. With that cart I insert and then push right. Fixes the issues every time. I really think that the edge of the board is a little worn so the cart is not centered correctly. I don't know if that is the issue in your case but it's worth experimenting with.

In the Wolfenstein 3D and Doom games the demos were not recorded gameplay obviously. The player's actions were stored and then they are played back in game. In order for the demos to work properly the code has to produce the exact same results as it did when the demo was recorded. So the player speed has to be exact, the random number generator has to produce the same sequences, objects have to work at the correct speed (doors, stompers, etc.), monsters have to respond exactly the same. If the code is not functioning correctly the demo will go off. If it goes off even a tiny bit the problem will compound and the demo will get progressively worse. The Doom source port I code on, Odamex, is one of the few source ports to have vanilla Doom demo compatibility. We have regression tests which run through a series of demos (headless and at super speed) and produce checksums that are compared against the known good values for those demos. If they are off we know we broke demo compatibility. It could be that we introduced a bug into the code or we pulled an extra random number that threw the sequence off. I've sat there watching demos to find the exact moment that it goes off before. My suspicion is that the cartridge is not seated quite right. My Ruiner Pinball cartridge has this problem where I insert it and it seems like it is working fine but there are actually some things that are messed up. For example the scoring is way off. It seems like you are scoring big but really the game is just dishing out points like candy. The ball physics are also totally goofed. If I turn the game off and push the cartridge over to the right it fixes the problem. I guess the board has gotten worn down some. You can bet that if the demos are off in Wolf3D the gameplay is off as well. Try fiddling with the cart.

I am going to play around with one a bit more. I didn't have a problem with the buttons after doing this but I would like to see if the board needs to be pushed up on the d-pad side or if the problem can be resolved by pushing the entire board up. If that works it might be less likely to decrease the Z button sensitivity. I will report back with any findings. -

I had that problem. You can see the exact same behavior here. This problem seems to be specific to the left direction as I experienced the issue on more than one controller. It is not a problem with the board or the connections. It only happens when using the d-pad while the controller is assembled. If you push the directions on the conductive pad each one works properly. I was able to fix it after a lot of trial and error. Open the controller, loosen the screw on the top board. On the d-pad side of the board (the right side when you are working inside of it) push up on the bottom of the board so as to shift it towards the top of the controller. While maintaining that pressure tighten the screw down very well. Reassemble and you should find that pushing left no longer results in a diagonal or "up" movement. I found that all of the d-pad directions worked as expected including the up+left diagonal. Shifting the board did not affect any other buttons. -

I don't find the original Jag controller to be particularly uncomfortable but the pro controller is an improvement.

I will be perfectly happy as long as the next generation console has a disc-based option. If they ditch it I will be done buying their consoles. If I'm going digital only I'd rather just play on PC. I can't download and play Xbox Live Arcade games or DLC on my original Xbox (legally) but PC games that I purchased at that time are still in my Steam library and they still function. The Wii store is gone. I believe the PS3 will be an offline console in a few years. Besides... my backlog is big enough that I could never buy a game again and I'd be good until I die.

I have two kids, a teen and a pre-teen. I need something to do to take a break from things. Playing guitar, piano, video games, and working on my lawn are those things for me. It takes me a while to finish a game but I still just prefer to stick with a game until I complete it. I just finished Doom (2016) and my play time (according to my submission on HowLongToBeat.com) was 19h 17m 24s. That took me five weeks.

It depends on the situation in that room I think. For my son it is convenient for him to access everything from his Xbox One. He plays his games, watches Youtube, Netflix, Youtube TV, Twitch, Mixer. All of those work great. It's a one stop shop for his media needs. It is wired to the network so he doesn't see a lot of buffering. The previous generation consoles are a mixed bag when it comes to this stuff. Two of the rooms I want to be able to watch streaming TV in (his room and my media room) have PS3 consoles so I decided to try out PS Vue. They SHOULD NOT advertise the PS3 as a supported device for that service. It is absolutely unusable. The interface is so agonizingly slow. The video quality is awful. The guide is useless. Changing channels freezes the thing up for ages. It's a total disaster. Watching PS Vue on Android TV and Roku was great but I don't want to buy any additional devices to have the service in those rooms. Fortunately those rooms also have Xbox One consoles and Youtube TV has an app for it. Youtube TV is just as good, if not better now that you aren't forced to watch VOD from your DVR, and $5 cheaper while supporting at least one device in each room I need it in. Some of these apps just need to be removed from the PS3 and Xbox 360. They do not provide a quality experience and I would prefer the providers be honest about their support for those consoles. -
Man that is so counter to the way I approach games. I pick a game off my backlog and I play that game exclusively until I complete it. I complete every game I play except in very very rare cases where I'm just not enjoying a game at all. Assassin's Creed 2 is an example of a game that I retired because, even after something like 15 hours, I still sucked at the combat, fell to my death all the damn time, and the story was really hard to follow. I know people love the game but it just didn't click with me. That is quite atypical. The good thing about my approach to gaming is that I never have a need to buy brand new games. I'm not going to play them at that time so there's no point in paying $60. I just wait until they are between $10-$20.

Controls feel off in Dark Souls at first. Then they suddenly click with you. And when they do it feels GOOD. The mechanics are not immediately accessible but they do make sense. The game has a certain unique feel to it. Dark Souls is the only game I ever immediately played through a second time after completing it. As in I watched the closing scene and immediately proceeded into New Game+ without so much as a break. When I finished getting the final achievement I actually had to take a break from gaming for a while because every game I tried to get into afterwards bored the shit out of me. After a few months that wore off but it's the first time I have experienced that. Later I went back and played through Demon's Souls. Loved it. Dark Souls 2 got a lot of flack by fans. I played through the SotFS edition. Loved it. I can't get enough of these games. But they are not for everyone. It's not a Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, or Fable style of RPG. I love those games too but they are made to appeal to as broad a gamer as possible. If you get pissed when you die in a game, or it pisses you off to have to replay a section over and over, or you get frustrated by a hard boss... the game isn't for you. When it comes to Dark Souls 1 in particular I think a high percentage of people will find the Anor Londo archers or S&O to be a brick wall for them at which they will cut their losses and move on to another game. Of the games in the series this one has a particularly steep difficulty curve, where Blighttown is a lot harder than the area that precedes it, and then a huge difficulty spike when you reach the archers and then S&O. It can really be too much for a lot of people. It probably isn't the best introduction to the series. I think Demon's Souls had a more even experience. It was shorter, you could take the areas in parts, and there were some great boss fights without any of them seeming impossible to overcome. Of the games in the series I find Dark Souls to be the most memorable though. It really gets a whole lot right. Anyway, don't take the "casul" stuff seriously. It's a joke. Nobody blames anyone for deciding the game isn't their cup of tea and moving on to something else.

You do not have to go to the bonfire to save in Dark Souls. You can just open the menu and quit whenever you want. That game will save when you do so. The game saves all the time actually. Every Souls game has worked this way. The only time you cannot quit is when you are actively being invaded.

When Atari released the Jaguar into the public domain use of the Atari logo was not part of the deal. Reproducing the pro controller is legal because Atari made it so. Putting the Atari logo on it is not. Setting that fact aside, count me as glad that the controller does not have the Atari logo on it. We should be able to tell the difference between this product and the original controller. Starwander is not trying to fool anyone about what he is selling. He has been 100% transparent about what he has been doing and what this is. He is selling it for a fair price. He isn't trying to rip people off on eBay. He certainly isn't reproducing the pro controller so others can buy it and then try to rip people off on eBay. If you want a couple of pro controllers for a reasonable price here is your opportunity. If your interest is in how you can make Starwander's hard work profitable for you then you can get bent. I see no reason why he should entertain a single complaint from such people. Thanks for doing this. I have an Atari pro controller but I would like to have more. I look forward to trying them out! * Three posts in a row from the same person to follow... -
I enjoyed the addons quite a bit. They didn't shed much light on things but they added to the story and characters.
