Ya'll got a bad data drive for whatever reason.  1st thing to check is that you actually have a black rubber "tire" on the timing wheel bottom right behind the door.  This is usually one huge reason the drive won't work.

I just got a Colecovision Adam from my son, and I picked up a Buck Rogers Super Data Pack to try out.  When I put it in and hit Computer Reset, it rewinds all the way to the beginning, and then keeps clicking. It never tries to play.  If I take the tape out, the gears keep spinning - it's clearly still trying to rewind.

Any thoughts on what I might need to do here?  I'm guessing there's something in the mechanism that should detect when the gears stop spinning (or encounter resistance) and switch things over to play the tape?

    Thanks!

    Thanks @NIAD

That makes sense, I read the interview you guys did with Tony, and he seemed very engaged in doing a full Trilogy, even starting work on number 2. I didn't see that Sol was involved.   The implosion of Sol and GODOS matches the timeline perfectly.

There was a guy in the TI-99 world who was doing some really great programming late in the TI-99/4a life cycle, I think the pressure just became to much for him. One day he is there like a rock star, and the next he totally disappeared.

I think the same thing might have happened to Sol in one way or another.

That's more like it, Sol disappeared again, not died; just did the disappearing act.  Shame, because despite all his faults, he did some great programs fo rthe ADAM.

  4. I have a few 1.44mb disk drives available.  New disk drive controller board from MicroFox mated with a tested modified 3.5" disk drive, enclosed in an ADAM color matched enclosure with the same footprint as the original Coleco disk drive.  Comes with power supply and compatible cable.

If your out there, thanks again for the manuals you sent me in the early 90's. I've finally found time to open the tyvek mailer and start reading them.

Sadly, Richard is no longer with us.  At an age over 90, he had medical problems and eventually passed away in April of 2022.  He was a moving force in the ADAM & ColecoVision community for many many years.  We were happy to know him thru his involvement in MTAG the Metro Ontario ADAM club and his work on many yearly conventions.

  6. On 1st glance, it appears that the printwheel is only hitting the top of the letter.  Could be that your printwheel is not clicked into the slot which keeps it in place.  It might be just turning some as the wheel revolves around and printing incorrect letters.  Could also be bad printer logic board.  OR it really IS printing in Axtec code.

I was able to score a Coleco Adam recently.  Just about everything works with the exception of the tape drive.  I get the wonderful just endless going back and forth with nothing on screen.  I pulled apart to inspect the encoder wheel, actually very clean however i cleaned anyway.  rubber was very well intact.  its looks barley used, no rubber on the encoder or in fact anywhere.  any suggestions?  possible board issue?  I try in and test on tape drive 2 where i had an open slot but yielded the same result.

    1. fully cleaned encoder wheel (looks fantastic)

    2. Buck rogers game works on another Adam (just spins to one end and then high speeds back again) rinse repeat

Rubbing alcohol and soft cotton cloth, vigerously rub back and forth on the read/write head to clean any gook off it so it is clean.

The drive power LED lights up and the drive itself spins.  Just won't load the disk.

I am going to try swapping out a different 3 1/2 drive this weekend. I just need to pull one out of any old computer

First thing is to clean the heads repeatedly, that brings lots of drives back from the dead

I have been thinking along those lines but have you heard of anyone creating a memory card in the center slot?

Or how about multiple devices on each slot.

Again, if all three share the same data and address lines then what sets each apart that makes them special in the sense of addressing that slot.
Which pin says I am slot 1, slot 2 and slot 3?  There has to be some unique identifier as to which one is which or else you could make a card riser and put 4 devices on the center slot as thought experiment.

If I had to make an assumption it would be that put many devices on those address lines and assign a port number that only the device knows and will answer when talked to.

I know that slot 2 can support parallel printer w boot prom, or print card with hd pinout, or I believe the Powermate uses center to access hd/floppy unit

    Please, everyone's thoughts

I am not trying to pretend I know everything, my specialty is in software engineering.

So going over the schematics and a multi-meter in an attempt to understand the three internal slots, am I wrong to conclude that they are all connected and basically the same thing?

Sure a couple of them are missing a few lines but in theory you should be able to put a memory card in any one of those slots.

The middle slot has the most lines but again, they should all be the same.
At a minimum they all have address and data lines, 5+ and ground.

So what is to keep you from using RAM or ROM in any one of those slots as long as you maintain the rules?  Mind that the pins may be in different locations.
As far as using the center slot for higher memory thanks to the refresh line.

Again, I am trying to understand because I am now getting into that territory for the DOS project.

    Thank you for your time.

    CC

Your thoughts are valid; the answers vague.  Coleco intended at a minimum that ADAM could support a serial modem in slot 1, I believe a language card in slot 2, and a memory card in slot 3.  They also used the external expansion on the side for the Auto Answer device.  When orphaned and others charged onto the scene, they made larger memory expanders, serial modems, printer cards and all the rest.  Basically, almost anything a developer wanted, the ADAM "could" provide in one form or other.  Trysid made a slot 1 serial 1200 baud modem; MI made mem expanders for slot 3, ide cards for slot 1 & one for slot 2, and powermate hd's using slot 2 - w/ or w/out printer support etc.  HLM/GMK did serial on the side port, 80 col video.  and on and on.  You just need to think outside the ADAM box and use whatever slot you need to and keep in mind what else might use that slot and conflict.  IF you think it, you CAN do it!!!

Quite a number of years ago, someone on here explained what they were and their purpose, but it has slipped my mind.

when ya'll figure it out, let us know NIAD.  I have seen those also and wondered what and why they are there.  I just assumed they altered the or added resistance to some pins they touched.  What do i know?

Am I asking for too much money?

I am trying to sell a complete Adam for $500

Adam main unit, kb, hand controller, printer, 64kb memory expander, ZIP100 IDE hard drive and 5 1/4 floppy drive

    Everything works

It takes just the right person to see it and it may not happen immediately

    I think you are cheap on price.  ADAM = $200; disk drive = $250; 64k = $40; zip hd w/ IDE card = $100+

I guess the next ask would be for someone to upload the disks here for me

I know exactly what you are experiencing.  I have had problems over the years with the ADAM New Network disks; some can simply be moved to .dsk format while others display raw data or ascii characters.  Now what I do is zip everything up so that the end users can unzip with 7zip and put them wherever they desire.

Worked at the coleco trade shows.  Developed the copy program back in 1985.  He told me Coleco would only green light him selling the program after the Adam was discontinued.. He said the program is in the public domin

Do we have it somewhere in the "great somewhere"

    ?

We are getting old! Ill have to search up the answer as well !!!

I do recall there are 3 variations and 2 of those were made by JVC and are referred to as OLD and NEW style JVC. Wasn’t the other manufacturer TEAC?

The original drive used a spring positioned at the top/middle where the DDP inserts. This was replaced by a clip to secure the DDP better.

The original drive also had the speed adjustment screw on the bottom instead of on top like the later versions had for easier access.

Last I recall is the read/write head went thru some improvements in the later or last version.

Just might have to read thru some chapters in The ADAM Survival Guide… I recall that Phil covered everything in there.

Thanks Jim, that is what I was looking for AND I will check the Guide.  I did replace read/write heads a few times and didn't know that fact - I just thought they were week heads  Go figure.....  THANKS
