  1. I played Star Raiders on an 800 and for me it was the FIRST killer app. I waited for something similar for the VCS and have pretty much played them all.

Star Raiders: the tweaks break it for me. It loses a lot of the system management stuff. The move to a smaller galactic map, changes to the HUD and difficulty in lining up a shot makes me cringe a little. I was so excited when it arrived back in the say, but remember a certain Pacman like disappointment playing it.

Star Voyager was the first one that I played on the 2600, and its Ok. Tough as nails too.

Phaser Patrol is a mytery because its the only one I've not played.

Star Wars:The Arcade Game has some control issues for me. Not a fan of the port.

StarMaster is the best cart only port. My only negative is the awful scoring system at the end of a mission. Gorgeous Activision, clean graphics do it again.

Check out Star Fire for a game that I've fallen in love with. Miles better than Star Wars Arcade (IMHO) but it shows years of homebrew developer polish.

  2. Nukey, thanks for all of the great fixes. I need to download these latest fixes for Raiders, Enduro and Star Raiders. Riddle of the Sphinx (Imagic) also uses a 2nd controller for inventory control, any chance to add that to your list? Plaque Attack (Activision) has acharacter offset/vblank issue that makes it unplayable as well. It would be great to have the complete Activision and Imagic libraries 100% on the handheld. Thanks again!

  3. Lots of folks REALLY dislike this Sears exclusive title, but due to the Flashback series it has higher visibility now then it did back (IMHO) in the 80's.

I get while some really dislike it, but oddly enough, I keep coming back to it on my handheld Flashback. The text is actually legible on the small screen.

My biggest complaint on it now is the cludgy ratio between enemies and stardates, and the equally cludgy way engine repairs are implemented. The stardate/Alien ratio makes finding a decent game balance that is fun to play more challenging than the actual game. Hack away? :)

  4. Unfortunately, Mr. Jon Freeman isn't answering mails concerning the finalization of the official license for the ColecoVision Archon anymore.

No way to do a homage title, like the "Light Cycles" game nearing release? Harchon? Arkon? Art-Con? Change the sprites and and it's Con-Con (all cosplay action)? Add a Breakout style mini-game and then it's Archon-oid?

  5. Do keep your PS3 though. Used games are plentiful and relatively inexpensive these days.

PS 4... There is all of this talk of Sony working on emulation for PS2 titles. Whether you can just pop in the disc and it plays is up in the air. Could be an MS solution where it is added to your HD from the disc and recompiled. Or it will just be purchases via PSN. If the latter is the case, they better be cross buy. I do not want to pay for those games again.

PS3 emulation... highly doubt it. They have their PS Now service for that, plus I have been told/read that it would be too technically difficult (I don't understand the details so I just take people word at it).

Enjoy your PS4 when you get it. I am glad I went with it first.

(Lots of edits if you read this... what I originally typed made little sense.... :) )

Emulation headaches on the PS3 have to do with the nature of the cell processor that is under the hood. At least from what I understand.

  6. So a PS4 is in my direct future, and I'm wondering about the upgrade path on DLC. Let's take two titles as examples:

Alien:Isolation : Available on both platforms, and I have a big chunk of the DLC. If I transfer my PSN account directly, do I need to repurchase that DLC or not? The entire Cross Platform buy stuff is a little nebulous to me. When I purchased DLC, I didn't select any Cross Buy option, just the DLC for the PS3.

Destiny: Since my game info is on the Destiny Servers, I should just need to a PS4 copy, and all of my save/character info should transfer, right?

Also, since PSN on the PS4 is a pay system, will I get access to the High End PSN membership on PS3 when I sign up?

The PS3 has been a workhorse in my house, and will be sad to see it relegated to "last gen" status. But it will join my console collection proudly. (Reverse order: Wii U, PS3, Wii, PS2, PS1, 32X, Sega CD, Genesis, NES, Colecovision, plus a Inty Flashback too. Maybe I'll pick up a 2600 Flashback this Holiday too.) A new HDMI splitter /switcher will be required to keep my PS3 & Wii U hooked up though.

  7. I finally got an 800, and am in the process of doing a little cleaning/restoring on it. The metal cover on the cartridge door has come unglued, and the foam that was the reverse liner on it has been disintegrating. So I'm doing a careful cleaning to make sure the foam bits aren't getting where they shouldn't. Question is, should I re-glue the metal cover back on to the inside of the cartridge door. IS it serving any real functionality? Some RF shielding that I should be aware of?

  8. We should start an AtariAge Clan. The Retro Shootists. ;> I'm VGL_Lynx on PSN. Running on a PS3. I love the PVE stuff, and Mayhem has made me laugh harder than any multiplayer game ever. I ran into a room with my BladeDancer, and ran into 5 other Hunters doing the exact asme thing. Hysterical. I need a Raid Sherpa though.

  9.

Thanks for the suggestion but we have one of the games and six characters. Not investing in another game and more characters just to make it enjoyable. We have two marvel characters and there is nothing but the toybox.

The 2.0 Playsets are being Clearanced out for the new 3.0 stuff. Gamestop also sells used Playset keys loose. I saw multiple Avengers ones at my local Gamestop. Food for thought. Yeah, I know. I kind of agree about paying extra for content already on the disc. That's why when Lego Dimensions launches, I might just buy the toys only and skip the game. :) But Portal, Dr. Who, Ghostbuster, Batman, and LOTR in the same world to play in? Need to not have my Credit Card with me when that comes out.

  10. My 1st computer was an Atari 800 back in the mid 80's. I loved that machine. But it went the way of garage sales to upgrade to an 520ST. Man. Those were the days. Well, it looks like an Atari 800 is heading back way my next month. A friend of mine has an 800XL and a Yellow 800 in storage and casually asked if I wanted the original 800. In a second I said sure, but am a little lost in making sure my new (old) 800 will be good to go. So what are the basics about going over a vintage Atari 800 to make sure it's OK?

Should I pull the RAM Cards or make sure they are seated OK?

What's the easiest way to get the Monitor out feeding to a TV? Using RF out is OK, but not the best.

I left the Atari computing world before so many good games were out on carts, the XE carts are compatable, right? I NEED "Rescue on Fractalus" and "Ballblazer" almost as much as I need Star Raiders. Same drill on cleaning carts though, right?

I can't wait to get 4 joysticks and play M.U.L.E like it was supposed to be played too!

    Thanks for the help.

  11. Skkylanders by a mile. Disney has a better group of characters to choose from but it's wasted on a game that's really not even a game. Me and my son tried for hours and all you do is run around building little games and such. No quest/fighting or anything interesting imo.

You need to get out of the ToyBox. The Playsets have everything you are looking for. The Marvel sets are pretty good straight up Marvel Games. The Avengers set especially. The Star Wars content for 3.0 looks great. I find Skylanders gameplay to be repetitive across the sequels. Fun, but just more of the same. The Toy Box of Infinity lets kids unleash their Minecraft skills as well.

Saying that, the Lego Dimensions stuff looks great. But may be more pricey than Infinity or Skylanders. :(

  12. Star Raiders and Rescue on Fractalus are the killer Apps for the 5200 for me. If I could find a decent controller solution, a 5200 would be in my collection in a second. I keep going back and forth (and searching) for an XEGS to solve all the problems for me. Maybe a 600XL might do the trick...

On the 2600, I agree that Star Master is the next best thing. I find 2600 Star Raiders to not be very playable (IMHO). Star Voyager is... OK. It's just a shooter without the systems management aspect of Star Raiders or Star Master. Go REAL old school and play Stellar Track LOL. I've never played Phaser Patrol but the HUD looks a little cluttered.

  13. The Last Gen version of Star Raiders never got published. It made it to playable demo form that could be downloaded from the Playstation Store and whatever analog exists for Xbox.

"Last Starfighter" on Atari 800 and the ROM floating around for the 5200 was the original Star Raiders II before being rebranded with the Starfighter stuff.

A decent (though IMHO not difficult) port was released for the ST line of computers.

Star Raiders DNA is in pretty much every spaceship sim from Elite to Wing Commander though.

  14. This is the "sunset" period for the PS3. NOW is the time to pick up the games you've been meaning to get as theyre starting to get marked way down.

Yeah, I did this when I upgraded from PS2/Wii to PS3. My shift to PS3 was pretty late in the console's lifespan. New titles look like they may have dried up on PS3 and Dev's have moved on. Destiny and Alien:Isolation may have been my last new releases on the PS3.
