I thought the 5200 Port had some other bug fixes in it as well.

On VC there are a few good Arcade games as well. Make sure you pick up Zaxxon,

The training option of the game lets you practice hitting & fielding.

Taking a Look at Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure
LynxVGL replied to pocketmego's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I was wary of this title because of how it's taken micro-transactions into the real world. All the content is in the game you've purchased, but to access it all you have to pay a good chunk of extra funds for figures, etc. HOWEVER... after hearing really great stuff about it, I picked it for my kids on the Wi, and it really is a great game. Knowing that more purchases were going to be coming, I couldn't stomach the extra $10 for the PS3 version. I like that the Store exclusives were limited. Originally Drill Sergeant (Tech) was a Walmart Exclusive, but I saw him in Target this weekend. The variety of gameplay is very nice, and the exploration/collection aspect of the game is very good. On GameFaqs I saw a posting that new figure waves are scheduled for January & February. But I agree, now as soon as our local stores stock figures, they are cleaned out VERY quickly. -
Why was speech synthesis such a big deal?
LynxVGL replied to boxpressed's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Arcade speech sythesis did have an impact on the gaming experience. The first time you played Sinistar and you hear "I live" or worse, "RUN COWARD!" could really rattle your nerves. Same for Sinistars scream. Star Wars Arcade (Atari) used it effectively when you lost your last shield ("I think I lost Artoo!") and of course "Use the Force Luke" when you start the trench run, actually giving you a gameplay hint (Don't shoot, IE using the Force, and get a big bonus for blowing up the Death Star). Sega's Star Trek Strategic Operations Simulator did similar things with Scotty giving you ship updates without having to look at that portion of the screen. Gimics in the 80's, but darn good gimics. -
IF you do one 65GamerGuy, do Football first. Baseball is a common Super Action Title, and I think more would appreciate football first.

Wii "....essentially an abandoned platform"?
LynxVGL replied to Metal Ghost's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I think system death has to deal with the time required by Developers to create good titles. Your average AAA title has a huge development team and the creation of Art & Programming Assets takes a time. A good title generally has a minimum of 12-18 months on it. (I stress GOOD game). So when a Developer has to choose which profit stream to gamble on, they have to drop one gen and move on to another. If you look at other publishers & developers, the Wii U is going to get Arkham City, COD, and other current gen best sellers, just ported to the new platform. We haven't heard too many rumors of titles from other developers besides HD Zelda, which kind of indicates that while Devs may have the hardware, they are feeeling it out to see what they can do. Again, something that takes time to do. The backward compatibility of the Wii U is a marketing ploy like the PS2 backward compatibility. Most Wii owners are clumped into the "Casual" gamer clump, so the marketing angle (IMHO) is that they don't have to dump their Wii Software collection when they "upgrade" to a new console. That approach worked in the PS2/Xbox/GameCube gen, but I don't know how much weight it bears now. -
Didn't mean to hijack the thread, but my SAC issue is the buttons aren't responsive anymore. Especially the bottom one. I've heard horror stories about opening them up so I haven't checked them out. Playing Star Wars Arcade & Gyruss on these was THE best. I'm bummed 'cause I finally scored a copy of Star Trek, and I have to use my normal controllers.
-
I thought SAB was pretty good back in the day. I had a friend who would always nail me with double plays on pop-fly balls. My SACs need help, refurb or replacement. I've always been interested in SAF but some reviews of it have been beyond harsh. Rocky has never (IMHO) been a good boxing game. Slow and ponderous best describes that game.

I love Gyruss too. The year that it came out, I remember giving myself a callous on my hand from playing the arcade machine so much the day our local arcade got it. Anyway... My preference has been for the Colecovision Port. Parker Brothers had some really good teams that were doing their ports at this time and I think this one stands up the best. In my opinion the music (which com'on, IS the most important part of Gyruss ) sound best on this version. While the enemy ship sprites are all one color, the animation to me seems smoother than on the other systems. I always though that playing with a Coleco Super Action Controller was a pretty good analog to the arcade experience. I wish that SOMEONE would have ported MAD PLANETS as well. Another title that lived and died on its music. And speaking of Music, i dearly wish Parker Brothers would have brought out Reactor for the Colecovision. Think of it... playing with the Roller Controller.... ahhh woulda, coulda, shoulda.

Multiple Console Ownership Losing Appeal?
LynxVGL replied to godslabrat's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I just made the jump and added a PS3 to my setup. Was running a Wii before. Last Gen I was running a PS2/Xbox and eventually a Gamecube too. Initially I didn't go for the PS3 because of sticker shock, and I wasn't ready for the HD upgrade of TV's and stuff at home. I'm there now, so a PS3 seemed the right choices right now, and the fact that Nintendo seems to have basically given up on the Wii altogether. The Wii U info that is dribbling out didn't give me enough confidence to hold out f for the Holiday 2012 launch of that system. That said, the few Wii exclusives will still be in high rotation against the PS3 titles. My son is into Metroid right now (Trilogy) and my two youngest are huge Mario fans. -
Since it was the Christmas season, my first purchases were all old titles, with new titles making it onto my Christmas list. I'll probably score the Uncharted Greatest Hits combo pack of Uncharted 1 & 2 as well.
-
The Upcoming Aliens Colonial Marines was one of the reasons I decided to upgrade. I'll be picking up Arkham City, and would love to pick up Mass Effect as well. I'm not a big fan of FPS, but the blended FPS/Adventure games like Fallout and Bioshock look great. After playing tons of casual games and "lighter" Nintendo based platforming fare, I'm ready for a return to more adult titles.

I've never been an early adapter. So I decided that this would be the year I joined the current Gen of systems. I've had a Wii for a couple of years, but have never really considered it to be in the same class as the PS3 or 360. I've enjoyed playing the Wii with my kids, but have wanted... more. I have significant Microsoft bias, so a PS3 has been looming in my future for some time. I bit the bullet and dove in today and picked one up with an Uncharted3 bundle. I picked up a couple of used games at Gamestop as well. Man. Talk about late to the party. THIS is what I was missing. Have been playing Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion this evening, along with a detour with Aliens Vs. Predator, some Uncharted too. Just whoa. Wow. Can't wait to let the TIMESUCK of new, good games begin again.

Thanks for those terrific ports! Stun Runner & Road Blasters are among my favorite Lynx titles too. Looking back at it, they way you used scaling sprites to emulate flat shaded polygons in Stun Runner is amazing. It is a true show piece for the Lynx.

The PS1 version of the Original Duke had an entire section devoted to other games. Levels that were knock offs of Tomb Raider & Residente Evil. The chapter is called "Plug & Pray."
-
Didn't Pole Position have in game billboards that referenced other Namco/Atari games? Or was that Pole Position 2? I have a memory of a Dig Dug or a Xevious Billboard in one of the games. Remember that Gorf (arcade) had the ultimate nod to Galaxians with an entire level that was a Galaxian board. Speaking of Galaxians, the original PS1 Ridge Racer let you play Galaxians while it was loading.

Childhood would probably be "Star Raiders." I remember a local Computer Company at the County Fair having a booth, featuring an Atari 800 running the seminal game. I was fascinated by its complexity (and that the Zylons looked like TIE Fighters) and hung out endlessly that Summer trying to get one more game of "Star Raiders" in. Good times.

I don't blame anyone for getting upset over the inclusion of the LYNX in that article. There's a narrative on the net that I see slowly but surely taking hold, and it's disturbing. That narrative is that anything with ATARI stamped on it must be junk, or 'worst of' involving video games. And certainly anything that is an ATARI product must have been unpopular, I mean it was an ATARI after all, the worst of the junk that ever was. That was kind of what I was alluding to. I agree that there is a modern move to label anything with the Atari brand on it as junk. Current Atari Corporate isn't helping this idea at all either. The VCS was fantastic in its era, and folks who grew up on modern gaming systems simply don't appreciate 4K games. They are equally dismissive of most 8bit Consoles EXCEPT for the NES. This thought is moving into the 16 bit gen as well, where Sega is the whipping boy. In fact I think you can draw an analog between thoughts on Atari and Sega. What happened with the Saturn and the Dreamcast (Sega Corp. pulling the plug, not the quality of the system) has colored so many people on comments about Sega. Now in turn, Sony is taking the lumps for the PS3 and PSP. It shows how fickle the gaming press (and community at large) is with lack of memory or awareness of what came before. They should talk about the hardware & the software and then stop. Some great games and systems were made that few people have played. There have been crap systems and games that waaaaay too many people have played. My OP didn't go into this, because I thought the original article I linked to was pretty obvious in how weakly written it was.

Defender Stargate need some help with Inviso
LynxVGL replied to Bountybob's topic in Arcade and Pinball
That's why I like the functionality of the Stargate which takes you to where landers are picking up humans, instead of just a random warp out. (Unless you are holding 4 humans and the level skip kicks in when you fly into the Stargate.) Like on the other thread, Stargate is one of the hardest machines EVER. In some ways playing it on an emulator is easier because of control mapping. A gamepad helps Stargate a little, but nothing matches making your hands fly around that machine to REALLY play it. -
But can you disagree with any of the points they make about it? Actually I do. Claiming system architecture was hard to program for is a joke. In the late 80's early 90's getting an Amiga Dev kit was not exactly hard. Atari Corp. fumbled the ball (per usual) on the Lynx. Nothing more. If Atari would have had marketing muscle, and not poisoned 3rd Party Dev's, I think the Lynx would have survived much longer. My Lynx has never "chewed through batteries like candy." I always thought the Lynx 1 was not uncomfortable to hold, or heavy either. Listing 3 Atari Consoles on the List just shows the author is strongly biased. What, you put the Lynx, 5200 and Jag on, but don't have room for the 7800 or XEGS? The author lists the Lynx on the list because "The Lynx makes its way onto this list not because of any of its own inherent shortcomings, but simply because it was never popular. " By that reasoning the 7800 and XEGS should be there too. It's sloppy writing by someone who has never played the console. I doubt the author ever played Blue Lightning or Chips Challenge. Klax on the Lynx is STUNNING. And the Lynx-com setup wasn't matched on handhelds until WiFi came along. These are my opinions based on playing the system, and not just looking it up on Wikipedia. Like 90% of the crap on the 'net, the article it isn't journalism, it's a barely informed editorial. (NOTE: I'm not claiming the 7800 is a "Worst System" because I've never played one. I only know about the crash of the system sales, again due to Atari Corp. holding the Console back for launch, and then a weak response to Nintendo. Same goes for the XEGS, but I do know my 8-bit Atari Computers.)

Another great thing about this thread is that it really shows the hoops that HomeBrewers go through to code these games. Building a title from the Ground up is a big job (even in 32K), and this little slice of just adding sound to an incomplete project is great. I swear I'm checking this thread 4-6 times a day now. Kudos go out to everyone working on this!

When 1UP launched awhile back, it was part of my online Gamesite routine. Lately any type of well thought out and written Game Journalism has faded away. If you read the comments on the list there are some interesting nuggets about the writer and editorial policies of the Site. I've deleted the bookmark from my browser.
