      Oh, you meant that kind of "sacred truth". Its sad to admit it, but you're right -there's a lot of discrimination towards those who drift away from the accepted theories-.

      What Carl Sagan meant was that a theory must be the least complex one, give us experimental predictions which must be proven to be correct and yield the same results as previous experiments in order to be considered truthful. This means that a in the future new theories might debunk the ones we already have.

      Well, that's not true al all, if you don't believe me, just ask any of these scientists whose theories were once some of those "sacred truths" you mention: Thales' solar system, Lamarck's evolutionary theory, Kepler's & Newton's laws of movement & gravity, Freud's... well, almost everything that guy said... among many other scientists and theories.
