  1. I don't think anything ever came of the Helium Heroes patch contest. I sent in my score around a year ago, and posted questions about it etc...never heard a word about it :)

No, unfortunately that effort fell apart. I'd still like to see it happen someday, and enough people now own a copy of the game that I'd probably get a pretty good response if I emailed everyone who's purchased a copy through the store as well as posted about it on the front page in the forums.

  2. I have an aging cell phone and I was waiting for Apple to announce a phone before buying a new one. You can bet your ass that I'll be getting one of these if it lives up to the hype. Just sucks that they aren't making it available for purchase until June. And I bet with all the pent up demand at that time, it'll be pretty difficult to get.

  3. I look forward to reading your reviews. You can probably guess which one I'm most looking forward to.

    "Merlin's Walls"? ;)

(Seriously though... how badly designed is a game when you're supposed to flip your TV on its side to play it?)

Actually, although I've started playing some of the games, I probably won't get to the reviews until after the weekend. I'm trying to get one, maybe two labels into the Medieval Mayhem contest. I'm about halfway done on the first one.

Can't wait to see what you submit for the contest!

  4. So what's your take on Boot Camp?

I think it's great that Apple has come forth with their own, official solution to boot Windows on the new Intel-based Macs. Also, if you haven't seen it, Parallels has released a beta of their OS X client that allows you to run pretty much any Intel-based operating system (Windows, Linux, OS/2, BSD, you name it) inside of OS X. With the new virtualization hardware built into the Core Duo chips, Windows runs at pretty much native speed within OS X:

Boot Camp and Parallels are two excellent reasons for me to pick up an Intel-based Mac so I can get rid of the two Windows PCs I keep around. I leave one on 24/7 and connect to it with Microsoft's Remote Desktop Connection for OS X (lets you control any Windows machines running Terminal Server). I then have another machine in my office that I only fire up when I need to program chips or play games. It's loud, so I only turn it on when I need to. That's why there's a machine downstairs, so I don't have to hear it (the Macs I have are much quieter than my PCs).

The Mac Mini with the Core Duo processor is interesting, but it has a weak video chipset so would not be good for playing games. The iMac is more appealing from that perspective, but it's more expensive and I don't really like computers with integrated displays. My primary computer is a 2.0 Ghz PowerMac G5 and it would be nice to replace it with an Intel-based machine, but I don't think those will be out until the summer or fall (probably will be announced ag WWDC).

At any rate, I think many people who have been sitting on the fence because they still need to run some Windows apps will now pick up a Mac since there are now viable solutions to that problem.

  5. I don't think anyone is really surprised that UMD movies have been a flop. I mean, c'mon, who the hell wants to pay more for a UMD than they can for the same DVD considering the DVD is higher quality, usable on a much larger range of devices, and often contains more content? While the PSP does have a great screen, UMD is just another proprietary and unwanted Sony proprietary media format.

I wonder which format will win out. My question is if the PS3 will play Blu-ray and regular DVDs (it is backwards compatible with the PS2, right?), will it also be compatible with HD-DVD. And if so how can some one lose by purchasing a PS3?

The only thing Blu-ray really has going for it is the fact that it's being included in the PS3. I can pretty much guarantee that the PS3 won't play HD-DVD. Sony wants Blu-Ray to succeed, so they won't support the competing HD-DVD standard (screw the consumers!) The looming format war really sucks, and I sure as hell won't be buying content in either format until it's clearly resolved. Not that I'll probably buy many movies in HD-DVD or Blu-Ray anyway--maybe newer movies and a few things like the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it's simply not as compelling going from DVD to HD-DVD/Blu-Ray as it was from VHS to DVD. And this greedy feud between all the companies involved in Blu-Ray / HD-DVD just makes me want to avoid them altogether.

  6. So I wonder if I'll get the fixed version of Raindeer Rescue whenever Adventure II is finished?

Yes, as thankfully I haven't built all of those yet. Although I did program a ton of EPROMs which I'll now have to erase and reprogram. Not completely necessary, since the bug does not exhibit itself with these particular EPROMs, but I'd rather not take a chance since the bug has been identified (and I just realized I still haven't tested it out on real hardware--will have to do that this weekend).

  7. Ahhh... Seattle. My hometown. Wish I could've been up there for the show, but alas, I'm stuck down here for now.

    Anyone take pics?

(And I'd like to see the football game, too. :) )

I'm hoping to see some pictures also. I've never been to Seattle, but would like to visit someday. The furthest north I've been on that side of the US is Portland. ;)
