  1. Hello all -

This is my first browse into the 8-bit forum (I spend most of my time in the 2600 section... :) )and I noticed reference to the XEGS - it sounds pretty cool!!! (I had never heard of it before!) I have an Atari 800xl right now (same one I had back in the early 80's) and was wondering:

    1) will my carts from the 800xl work on the XEGS?

    2) will my 1050 disk drive work on the XEGS? If so, will the games?

    3) is there a list of carts that are available for the XEGS?

    4) and finally - is this worth getting? What is the general opinion of the XEGS?

    Thanks!!

  2. Hello all-

Does anyone know whether the ROM for Galaxian Arcade has been updated with the correct colors? I recall the last post regarding this someone had directed the programmer to the TIA Colorchart available on the net. I would really like to pick up Galaxian Arcade from AA but I'd rather wait for the version with corrected colors to be made available (if it is indeed going to be made available).

    Thanks,

  3. Wow!!! I hope this is real!! Of course, if it is, I'll be kicking myself for a long time... I'm right next to Hartford and planned on doing the flea market circuit for the last couple of years but always thought that CT was not a "hot-bed" for prototypes... :(

Live and learn I guess, but we'll see...

  4. Hello all -

I'm trying to play Atari 5200 in Atari800WinPL but I can't seem to figure out how to pitch!!! Does anybody know what key emulates the "top" button? I use the arrow keys and the RCtrl key to bat, run, select runners, move fielders, etc., but for the life of me I can't figure out what key I need to press to re-activate my pitcher to get into "pitch mode".

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

  5. Hello all -

I may be wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that Activision was against using flicker of any sort in a game, and therefore designed games that the hardware could accomodate without this technique.

I think most maze games on the Atari (or at least the exciting ones) use flicker (ie. the Pac-man games) to simulate more than one foe on the screen. Perhaps this is why Activision steered away from these types of games.

    Just a thought...

Thanks for the tip!! I found a website that sells plastic enclosures:

    http://www.pactecenclosures.com/index.lfml

The model CF-175 or LH129-250 look like good candidates.

Question on making the holes: does anybody have any ideas here? The circles for the AV jacks, buttons, etc can be done with a drill I'm sure (on slow speed) but what about the rectangle for the cartridge slot? How about mounting the cartridge connector?

Thank you everyone for all your help!

Thanks for the tip - I actually do have an old non-working VCR that I can use, but I was hoping to use a "clean" case to make it look a bit more authentic. Maybe I'll use the VCR for my prototype...

    Thanks again!

  8. Thanks for the ideas!!! Paul - that link to the rack-mounted Atari is exactly what i'm looking for (as far as the inside is concerned) - now if I could only find an empty shell to put it in so I can proudly display it in my stereo cabinet!!! :) Does anybody know where such a generic case could be found? Are there resources that actually sell these things? (just a black case the size of a VCR that I could drill holes and mount the Atari in)

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

  9. Hello all,

Last night I was playing my X-box and it got me thinking about a custom case for my Atari 2600 so that I can stack it in my stereo component cabinet.

    Here are my thoughts:

    1) put the Atari in a component case (much like a VCR)

    2) Wire the cartridge slot to the front of the case (like where a VCR tape would go). This would probably have to be recessed a bit so the cartridge wouldn't stick out so much.

    3) Wire the power switch, Color/BW, difficulty switches, select and reset to the front of the case

    4) Do the video/stereo mod and add the connectors to the back (including the power adapter)

    5) Wire the controller ports to the front also

Other ideas (a little more difficult) would be to include either a custom controller port for remote control of reset/select/diff./colorbw (with a custom controller) or even an INFRARED port and a programmable remote control (not sure if this is do-able). I would also use extension cables for the joysticks. I guess I'm just looking for a way to have my custom Atari "on display" in the stereo cabinet (along with my other hi-tech :) components like my VCR and XBOX) and be able to play it without pulling it out of the cabinet all the time.

Does this sound like something that can be done? Is it possible to buy generic component "shells" anywhere? I'm not sure if I'm adept enough at soldering and cutting cases to do this but I thought it would be cool...

  10. Chris,

This mod sounds fantastic. Here are my recommendations:

Personally, I would use the stereo out with s-video, but would like to have the option to use composite for TV's without s-video. Also, not hard-wired - I would prefer jacks on the outside of the system (1st choice) or jacks inside with cables that can be replaced.

As for cost, I would offer 2 models, a basic and advanced. The basic could possibly have mono/composite and the advanced would have stereo/s-video (or switchable). I'm not sure what your costs are but a low-end/low cost solution would probably be very appealing to some people. Maybe even 3 models: Composite, Super, and Switchable. Again, your costs for each part would determine that.

I have modded my 4-switch with Ben's mod. In your opinion, how does your mod compare to this one? What are the main advantages?

    Thanks again!

  11. I checked out Nathan's site - great job!!! You can clearly see a difference in the CD4050 mod to Ben's - ghosting is minimal (but still apparent) and I can only assume that the signal is stronger (which would correct the projector/INPUT 3 issue).

I will patiently wait for the boards to be made available... :)

    Thanks!

  12. Question for the videophiles out there:

I did Ben's hack to my 4-switch, and, although the picture is nice (much better than RF), I had a few issues:

    1) The picture had a "bleeding" effect on some games (for example, in Golf, the sandtraps had a different color outline on the right side).

    2) When I hooked it up to my big screen, the "INPUT 3" stays in the upper-right hand corner, as if the TV is not getting enough of a signal (picture is fine)

    3) At work, I hooked it up to a projector and the picture was awful unless I routed it through a VCR. Again, probably not enough signal strength.

So, my question is regarding the CD4050 hack - does it correct any of these issues? If so, put me on the list for buying one when and *if* they are sold here at AA!!! :)

    Thanks,

  13. Decathlon was always one of my favorites - me and my 3 brothers would always have great competitions with it.

As for being a joystick killer, we never did break one playing Decathlon. I did have a friend (he's was a bit on the hefty side) break a chair playing Asteroids (not sure if there is any relation) and another "strong" friend actually "ripped" the top off of an Atari joystick trying to run away from Rhindle the dragon in Adventure!! Man - it was priceless seeing his reaction, looking up at me with this suprised, panicked look and the joystick top in one hand, wires dangling, and the joystick bottom in the other. Classic...

  14. My vote is for an XBOX version of the Anthology and any other Anthology. As for a new Anthology, online would be awesome (Xbox Live?) with the M-Network games, Imagic, CBS, Sega, etc. Parker Bros too (although it sounds like that would be a problem).

Thanks for letting us give our input!!

  15. Now I'm no expert by any means, but I believe the way it's accomplished (in a high level explanation) is by using a combination of RESP0 (reset P0) during a scan line and NUSIZ0 (to make three copies).

For 6 players on one line (like Space Invaders), you could use P0 and P1 with the same graphic, both with three copies, but I think there is a way to display all 6 using just P0, NUSIZ0 and RESP0.

Here's a link on "The Dig" that has some code.

    http://www.neonghost.com/the-dig/source/source.php3

    Hope this helps!!

  16. Joe,

I tried to do that same thing a while back with Hozer. Randy cannot make an NTSC Klax cart because it requires the Sara chip (I believe this is the Super Chip that has 128K bytes of RAM).

Here's the thread that detailed my experience:

    http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7416

I hope somebody someday decides that bringing this game to cart form is worth the effort - I think it's one of the best on the 2600!!!

    Hope this helps...

  17. Hello,

Does anybody have a disassembled listing for 2600 Asteroids? Thomas - I know you did a hack of the game some time ago to support Driving controllers and display the "extra ships" (fantastic job btw). Did you happen to disassemble the game as well (I assume you would have had to).

If so and you're willing to share, I'd love to see what you came up with!!! ;)

    Thanks again,

  18. Hello all,

I am a *newbie* Atari 2600 programmer and I have a question regarding bankswitched games; in particular the F8 bankswitch mode used by Atari for 8K games.

I have surfed the net and I understand basically how it works (correct me if I'm wrong): Accessing $1FF9 in bank 1 will switch to bank 2, and in that second bank accessing $1FF8 will switch back to bank 1.

    My question is this:

How do you write an 8K game in DASM that will use bankswitch mode F8? I realize that you must have two 4K blocks of code and that only one bank can be used at one time. Is there a quick "shell" that demonstrates how this is done? Can DASM compile and generate an 8K BIN?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

  19. Great job on the game!! I've never played the actual game, but I'm learning...

Any chance that a game like 'pitch' or setback could be made? It sounds a lot like this game, but has a few different rules: you're trying to capture hi, lo, jack and game and you bid a number of 'points' (2-4).

Anyone else ever here of this? We used to play in college all the time (I'm in the NE). Ttoo much time if I remember correctly... ;)

    Just a thought...

    Thanks,

  20. I agree - Tempest's site is fantastic. One of the most fascinating things about the 2600 is all of the prototypes (and the stories behind them) and with atariprotos.com we finally have an informative, cohesive, and entertaining resource that brings it all together.

    Thanks again!!!
