  1. Thanks everyone for your ideas - I'm actually looking for a printable Klax label (in the Red label variation) much like the Grover's Music Maker label that Rhindle provided on a previous thread. You see, I'm not an artist or good at sizing stuff with paint programs and I'm very lazy... Seriously though - thanks again to everyone and their suggestions...
  2. Please count me in. I know that someone was working on a 2600 Programming for Dummies guide - not sure what happened there... Anyway, I think a complete resource, with all the tools, examples, etc. would be fantastic. I tried my hand at Stellalist and after following simple instructions (ie. download this and compile that) but failing miserably, I lost interest as time is of the essence... I would also pay a subscription fee or a fixed fee for a book if made available...($$$). Either way, thank you for considering this venture. It appears by the number of positive responses that this need should be filled by someone...
  3. Hello everyone, Does anybody have a printable version of the label for NTSC Klax? I assume it would look very similar to it's PAL counterpart. I just ordered the game from Randy at Hozer and would like to pretty it up upon it's arrival... Thanks,
  4. Does anybody have any pics of their mod that they'd like to share? I think it would be very helpful for all those trying this mod to have a general idea of what things should look like as they work... I can post some pics of my 4-switch 2600 composite mod (using Ben's solution) if anybody is interested, but it sounds like Chris Wilkson's or ReqSoft's is the way to go....
  5. Glenn - Where can I find Chris Wilkson's video mod? What does "switchable composite or Y/C" mean? I tried Ben's hack and I'm not too pleased with the picture - I get a ghosting effect on games like Adventure and the signal to my TV isn't clear (but better than RF). Also, does anybody know of a circuit I could use to amplify the video signal (besides running it through a VCR)? Thanks,
  6. Hello all - I am interested in printing up some mock labels for some unreleased prototypes (ie. Grover's Music Maker, Holey Moley, etc.) and was wondering if anybody has tried this themselves. Rhindle the Red was gracious enough to provide to me a fantastic label for GMM but I'm not sure of the best way to print it up.. - I own a HP1600C (ink jet printer); is this good enough to print a full color label? - what type of "paper" do I use? does anybody have a part # of some specific glue-back paper that I could use? - are there services available to have these printed up professionally? (without costing an arm and a leg?) Any help would be greatly appreciated... Also - can someone recommend a resource for getting these games on a cart? Anybody have an exerpience with one that they would like to share? Thanks!
  7. Rhindle, Thank you! That label is fantastic! You wouldn't happen to have one for Holey Moley, would ya?? moyocon - when I said I had a little girl, I meant "the little girl inside of me".. actually, using the "record" feature to make your own songs has some entertainment value... Rhindle - here are the controls for GMM if you're still up for making the overlay: It's basically this: 1,2,..,9 and '*' are all musical keys (each assigned a color also). The '0' key is to Play your recorded song or one of the built-in songs. The '#' key is used to cycle through which song to play and recording mode (same as the SELECT switch on the console). The RESET switch puts the game into record mode also. Thanks again!!!
  8. I recall scribbling a full page ad on the back of one of my notebooks in 7th grade declaring the glorious event... "Pac-man - the Arcade Game!" "Coming to the Atari VCS on March 2!!!" (or whatever date it was) I do remember actually getting Pac-man and playing the heck out of it. I do remember asking questions like - why is the maze blue and orange? How come I only get 1 point for eating a dot? Why is there a wafer instead of fruits? Why doesn't Pac-man turn when I move up and down? Are those ghosts different colors? Why is the tunnel on the top and bottom? Why is the game making that horrendous noise every time I eat something? Oh well...
  9. Does anybody know how to 'play' this game? I have a little girl who loves playing the CCW Atari games and I was thinking of suprising her with GMM by having Hozer put it on a cart: - is this game complete? - has anybody made a "mock" label in the CCW fashion (yellow grid) for this game? - has anybody made a "mock" overlay for this game? Any help would be greatly appreciated (by me and my little girl)... Thanks!
  10. I've been involved in collecting 2600 games for over a year now (mostly through eBay, trading, and begging friends and family) and I've noticed that the more rare games don't seem to be up for auction as much as they were just 6 months ago, namely Waterworld, Crazy Climber, Q*Bert's Qubes, Quadrun, etc. My only guess is that collecting old Atari stuff is becoming more popular (or at least more popular than a year ago) and people are snatching the stuff up and not re-selling. I'm starting to get worried that I'll never get to own some of these games... Any thoughts on this?
  11. Best game against the computer (game #1): Me: 22 Computer: 1 Best shutout vs. the computer: Me: 13: Computer: 0 Playing the computer is like a good practice, but this game rocks as a two-player game. I remember getting it right around the time the "Miracle on Ice" US Hockey team was making history... Ah the memories....
  12. John - Thanks for the info. It looks like the booster grip actually uses Pin 5 and 9 to emulate it's buttons (these are the Paddle A and B pins).
  13. Does anybody know how the booster grip controller (used with Omega Race) works? Specifically, which pin it uses and for which port. In a related question: why did CBS see the need for this controller anyway? Couldn't they have just used "up" for thrust and the button for fire? Does anybody know of a hacked ROM that does this? (or is it even feasible?) Omega Race was always one of my favorites but without a Booster grip I'm kinda out of luck... Thanks,
  14. It would certainly be great to have these available to play (or even better as released games). I had an opportunity to play Anteater, AD&D Treasure of Tarmin and AD&D Tower of Mystery at CGE2K1 and I must say that all 3 were quite impressive. The Rocky&Bullwinkle game looks like a lot of fun - does anyone have information on the gameplay or object? Thanks,
  15. Here are the 2-player simultaneous Atari games that are played most often in our house: Sky Diver Flag Capture Surround Ice Hockey Video Olympics Boxing Combat Freeway RS Tennis RS Volleyball Warlords Dodge'em (game #3) Basketball Bowling Steeplechase Space Invaders (game #33) Indy 500 Sprintmaster Star Wars: Jedi Arena Track 'n Field Wizard of Wor Have fun!
  16. Does the speaker wire need to be "shielded"? The guy at radio shack said the original cables that shipped with the Atari were shielded because of the RF interference. Does anybody know if this is true? Thanks again!
  17. To all: I have 4 Junior systems that do not have RF cables or power adapters, making them somewhat useless. I read the post with the link for purchasing the adapters pretty cheap (thanks!) but I'm looking for a solution for the RF cable. I went to Radio Shack and the guy was trying to sell me a shielded RF cable for 25 bucks and said that was all that would work. Does anybody have any suggestions? Thanks!
  18. I have been playing this early-release Atari game quite a bit lately and I must say that it's awesome! I was able to get a perfect score on game #1, but then put both difficulty switches on 'A' (blue car starts in a random position and goes twice as fast on every other track). Very challenging! What does everyone else have to say about this classic? BTW - my high score with both switches on 'A' is an even 300 - anyone else have a score to post?
  19. Just got 390 with both switches on 'A'. I'm hooked!!!
  20. What's the story with this game? Did Atari produce it? It's pretty fun and seems fairly complete - any ideas why it wasn't released?
  21. I did Ben's composite mod to my atari 4 switch and the picture and sound are both excellent, although there are a few issues: 1) there seems to be a ghosting effect on some images; a white outline appears on many objects that are being displayed. not sure why... 2) when playing on my big screen tv, every minute or so it will display "Input 3" on the upper right hand corner as if it doesn't detect a video signal. very annoying. I assume that 2 (and possibly 1) could be fixed by amplifying the video signal. My question is: do you have to do this through a VCR? Does anyone know of an actual circuit or video booster that can be purchased from Radio Shack? I would like to have the booster permanently in the Atari if possible. Any ideas? Thanks,
  22. I don't think it's a glitch - I'm sure Warren programmed Yorgle to run away from the key. His logic just didn't include that one spot which causes the freeze. The logic is probably like this // code for moving Yorgle if (gold key on screen) { if (goldkey_X>Yorgle_X) Yorgle_X=Yorgle_X-1 else if (goldkey_X Yorgle_X=Yorgle_X+1 if (goldkey_Y>Yorgle_Y) Yorgle_Y=Yorgle_Y-1 else if (goldkey_Y Yorgle_Y=Yorgle_Y+1 } else { // move Yorgle independantly ... } If Yorgle and the gold key have exactly the same coordinates, that case is not handled and therefore Yorgle won't move. This could easily have been fixed by having a >= for the X and Y test to include this point... Of course, this is pure speculation - someone like Thomas would have to disassemble the code and see what's really going on... Anyway, a cool 'glitch' none the less...
  23. Thanks for the tip Scott. My brother used to do that one too... Anyway, if anyone wants some tips on how to paralyze Yorgle, this is what I usually do: 1) play game 1 2) on reset, get the gold key so that it is to your right 3) go down one screen and to the left one screen (Yorgle is on this screen). Only put your sqaure in this screen, keeping hold of the gold key in the screen to the right so that Yorgle doesn't run from the key (since he won't see it). 4) Yorgle will attack. Make him "choke" on you so that he keeps biting but cannot kill you. he will move gradually to the left. 5) once he's moved to the left a bit, on the next "bite", put the gold key exactly above him (so that they line up vertically) 6) after Yorgle has finished his chomp, he will move directly down. Quick! Move the gold key directly down until it is past Yorgle's head and direct him directly upward. 7) move upward with the key and stop when it is in the correct place (see above post). Yorgle will be paralyzed! This takes a bit of practice so be patience... You can now drop the gold key and move about freely. Go get that sword and practice your moves on the beast! Once you kill him, press reset and he'll be alive and well (and still paralyzed), waiting for more punishment... If anyone is interested, I have an AVI recorded of me actually performing this trick if the description isn't accurate enough. Let me know and I'll post a link... Have fun!
  24. Cafeman - Thanks for the tip - I know Yorgle will run from the gold key. The trick is paralyzing him with it - so he can't move! If you can sucker him close enough to bite you, will he's recoiling you can drop the gold key right on his mouth (so that the key hole and his eye line up). If done perfectly, Yorgle will become 'paralyzed' - he will not move at all until the gold key is removed. You can even go and get the sword, kill him, press reset and he will still be there, frozen! If you look close at the picture in my first post, you can see the gold key overlapping Yorgle at the exact spot it must be dropped. It's not an easy task, but once it's done it's a pretty cool effect... Sorry about the confusion...
  25. Hello all: Back in the late 70's my brother used to do a trick when playing Adventure where he would paralyze the yellow dragon (Yorgle) with the gold key. I've been searching the net to see if this has even been documented (as a cheat or something) but couldn't find any matches. Therefore, I figured this would be the best place to post my findings. I just spoke with my brother and he told me how he did it. After a few minutes running Adventure on StellaX, I was able to reproduce this phenomenom: If anyone knows of where I might find a write-up on this on the web, please let me know!! Thanks,
