  1. The Gamepad

An unusual update this time. I decided that I had had enough of the 7800 'American controllers and picked up a pair of the "Euro" Gamepads off of eBay. The original 7800 controllers seemed to be this wierd concept of making the 2600 controller feel like a Colecovision controller without all the functionality (no keypad) and made more cheaply. I've gone through four of the things and each had problems with only one I would consider 'playable'. I haven't run into a game console with controller issues like the 7800, and I can't help but think that was another nail in the console's coffin.

The gamepad, though, is another story. Someone was listening to the market when the 7800 got its official 'wide' release and ditched the doorstops in favor of a more 'modern' pad which heavily resembles (though has less functionality than) the SMS pad or the NES pad. While of inferior quality to its brethren, for the 7800 itself this is a huge upgrade. It's far more reliable and responsive than the doorstops and feels a lot more natural in the hand. I wouldn't normally rate hardware changes as a 'must get' item for anything, but this really does give a lot more value and enjoyment to the experience.

  2. I've said before, that I find it a little upsetting that you use a picture of my girlfriend as your avatar.

Never date a girl whose ambition is to be a porn star when she grows up. .... Seriously, the hotness there is seriously outweighed by the pure NASTY.

Anyway, wasn't there a hack of Sentinel for NTSC somewhere? I thought I remembered seeing one, but my forum-fu isn't as good as others.

  3. Apparently the code for GORF and its two derivates rest with Bob now as well.. any chance anyone who's in contact with him can get it posted? GORF was pretty far along and I would have to see it vaporize...

  4. Oh shut the hell up ya bunch of whiners! I hope it doesn't ship at all this year..just to piss you guys off!

Stupid frellin' calendar! January being all next year and that! I hope you're happy, Corby! Gregorian really pisses me off!

    :P

  5. Try the gameplay without the intermissions and see if they're 'missed' first. To me, personally, they seemed to interrupt the 'flow' of the game rather than give the poor hands a few seconds off like in PacMan.

  6. If there's more space, I would personally focus on adding (or trying to add) Tengen's gaming variants rather than more music. The '5 piece' blocks were an interesting addition to the challenge.

And, of course, when this is done, Puyo Puyo? :)

  7. Secret Atari ROM!

Pulled it down, tried it out... very nicely done so far. The basic game play seems to be there.

As for sound, I would say to have the basic 'flip, drop, stack, kill' sounds be TIA calls. Background music should do a Pokey-Detect to do the public domain Russian themes we all know would fit the game. TIA music would be possible for intro/outro and level clearing as well, which would go to Pokey if the chip's present on the cart.

As for XM.. I don't think this is one of those games that needs the upper-end. It's so far clean and simple and would probably would best that way as a VERY nice addition to Atari Age's 7800 lineup. :)

  8. Id really like to score a copy of missing in action as well. why wont the atariage store make this one? cart size?

I think it had rather unique cart requirements. So until Atari Age starts doing a new 'melody' system for 7800 carts, I'm afraid this one's temporarily out of bounds.

  9. Space Invaders

Really hard to say enough good things about this 7800 homebrew. It's an amazing port of Space Invaders, looking and sounding like the arcade game while adding in all those features from the 2600 version of the game. If you're an arcade completist, this is simply a 'must get'.

  10. Well, my purpose for the POKEY chips was for Harmony/Melody-style carts for homebrew games. A $10 markup for a homebrew that uses them doesn't seem to out of line for me. So the remaining question for my purposes is what would go into new 7800 carts with either 64K or 128K on board and POKEY. I'm actually struggling to find reasonable prices on RAM amounts that low. Anything under a meg these days is difficult to get a hold of...

  11. Contacted Best about bulk orders for POKEY chips - they can fill a few hundred as needed, but they do not offer bulk discounts. $10 is pretty close to their margin. So, if a POKEY is going to be on a new 7800 board, there's $10 of the cost no matter what it looks like.

  12. Groovy, how new to this do you really think I am?

Besides, let me call this out then. Can you tell me, right now, what the current hold up with the XM is, and why there hasn't been any communication to his buyers (yes, guys who paid money) for over a month now (and even that last one was "I've been sick")? You want to denigrate Best for "getting them out of tubes and putting them in your delivery box" yet my only question was how viable it would be to make carts using them - nothing more than that - because the XM really doesn't seem to be coming.

Even if it IS coming, does it really make sense to be on hold indefinately for people who are losing interest in homebrewing because the hobby is effectively 'on hold' for it? I don't see why you feel the need to denigrate anyone looking for alternatives when confronted with the very real prospect that the XM just ain't gonna be there.

  13. A Harmony 2 cart with a built in pokey slot like the CC2 has would be great. I have no idea if Batari will ever release it since he hasn't said anything about it in ages. Otherwise no one really wants to front the huge upfront cost for a new pcb which includes a pokey slot unless you mean you were willing to do it.

I might, though I admit that I don't know the costs involved (and estimates floating around these forums are all over the place). I would honestly like to find out, which oddly seems to raise some hackles from some people. But I don't see why it's unreasonable, from those saying "wait for the XM" to find out about other options, however - and I'm a bit sick of the whole "don't do anything, don't make new games, don't look for POKEY chips, wait for the XM!" attitude in many of these threads.

  14. Given the number of XMs ordered you can pretty much say that anybody interested in homebrew is going to have one. As a developer you might as well target the majority.

Doesn't matter if it doesn't exist. I'll reconsider that stance once people have the XM in hand and these threads are filled about how nearly all Atari Age fans are enjoying the hell out of it. Until then, you're arguing for pie in the sky without the pie.

Good luck with that. You'll need a good understanding of electronics, PCB layout, 6502 and ARM assembler and then deal with getting it made.

No need to be condescending. It was done one for the 2600, so I'm having difficulty with the idea that it's impossible or unfeasible for the 7800.

  15. Groovy, to be frank, I don't think the XM ever see the light of day (at least as something people will get shipped to them), and even if it magically appears, the number of users for it would be a niche within a niche within a niche. So, to me, saying "wait for the XM" is not a pragmatic solution.

I'm looking for something more pramatic for home-brewers and repros - which means looking at, perhaps, new carts or a new 'product' card similar to the Harmony-cart available on the 2600. If that means an order made for a custom cart with a Chinese factory, then so be it, I would would like to approach that option with reason than keep the entire hobby on hold for a product which will never come.

  16. I put up the $15,000 amount based on the reported number of orders and the amount each order cost. Absent any proof of additional orders or costs, that's where the number seems to be. The 'three years' is based on the date given for the first orders taken.
