    Pretty much my reason for never making an offer. While I assume I'd never make an insane low ball offer- I feel like some people take asking for less as a slap in the face sometimes.

    I'd say that 10-20% off is in the range of a reasonable offer. The seller might counter with 10% off if you want 20%, but that's to be expected.

    What's kind of weird to me is when the buyer counters on a low-priced item so that the difference between your last offer and theirs is like $2. At that point, I begin to think that the buyer just wants to "win" by getting the last word.

  2. Not too long ago, I shifted all my eBay listings from BIN only to BIN/Best Offer. What happened was kind of surprising. I didn't expect very many people to hit the BIN when a Best Offer option was available. Some items were rare, which would explain why the buyer would not use Best Offer (risking that the item would be sold while waiting for a response). But most items did not fall into this category. The surprising thing was that about half of my sales have been at the BIN price. These buyers didn't want to bother with making an offer even though they could have saved 10%, maybe more. It makes me wonder whether some buyers are nervous or intimidated when making an offer.

    Anyway, I thought this would be a fun thread to discuss this finding or to share other entertaining stories about Best Offer.

    Thanks, I've giving it a try, but I've run into an issue.

    I'm going with the 47 User Type, since none of the other settings match any of the information in the link.  However, so far I've only identified 3 of the five figures that my BIOS is asking for (listed in order below).

    Cyln = 7761

    Head = 81

    WPcom = ? (retained 1250, but I'm not sure that's right.

    LZone = 512

    Sect = ? (nothing I've tried has been retained)

    The "Size" of the drive is listing as 0 MB, and so far it won't let me alter that.

    I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.  The question is: What is it?

    So you're saying the BIOS ROM on the Promise controller will detect and use the full capacity of a drive on a totally different card, like the original Multi-I/O board that came with the system?

    Here's a Vogons thread where your question is asked but not answered at the very end. But it does have more info about your Promise card.

  5. If you're willing to go the CF route, you can get rid of TWO HDDs. And you can get rid of DoubleSpace and run a clean system. Just buy a handful of 1GB cards and format to 540MB. I use CF with both of my 486 builds (MS-DOS 6.2 and Windows 3.1 only), and they work great. (Don't recommend for Windows 9x). You can even have separate CF cards for different DOS and Windows setups (games, drivers, MIDI mapping, etc.) and use them like cartridges.

  6. I like the DOS response, but I'll say the Windows 95/98/ME platform with the DirectX 7 era as the sweet spot. It was roughly a 6-year span between 1996 and 2002, after which Pentium 4s became entry-level and XP took over. (If you wanted to be a stickler, you could say the Windows XP platform was better since it could play all 95/98/ME games that didn't require Aureal 3D sound, but I think it's fairer to be period correct with the hardware.)

    So maybe a Pentium 3 with a DX7 AGP graphics card (e.g. Geforce 2 MX) and a PCI sound card (e.g. Aureal Vortex 2) would be the typical Windows 98SE platform in 2000.

    Too many games to list even the best of the best, but Half-Life, Unreal, Unreal Tournament, Quake 2, Quake III Arena, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, Diablo 1 & 2, and Starcraft were gaming experiences that couldn't be matched on any console at the time.

    Hey guys, is there any real advantage to have one of these machines besides nostalgia? I'm talking about performance with games compared to DOSBox. I'm curious about that, are there any DOS games that run badly on emulators?

    I think I said this in a thread from years ago, but the appeal that retro DOS/Windows 98 PCs have for me is ... problem solving. There's a satisfaction in getting everything to work just right with the benefit of hindsight and the wisdom of the community. Using the perfect drivers, tuning the settings for optimal experience, etc. For instance, right now I'm playing around with my K6-3+ build and an AWE32 with 28MB of RAM. I've loaded a 28MB sound font and am listening to Tyrian's music with this new sound font. That's why it's fun for me, but I'm in a very small minority of enthusiasts.

    But if you just want to play the games, the emulation is the route for you.

    Pretty sure mine it is only 200mhz. I know it is a K6-2 and not a K6 as I skipped the first AMD K6 series. After my K6-2, my next system was a Celeron 300a (running at 450mhz or course...).

    You might be right that it is actually a fast proc, but I likely have the bus speed reduced in addition. Again it has been about 6 years since it was fired up last and I looked at it in detail. I really need to pull it out because I've always had an issue with card sag on my LAPC-I board installed in it since this full tower case it is all in, doesn't have brackets for full length expansion boards. I literally have an old CD case that some blank CDRs came in stuffed under it to keep it semi level LOL!

    Ooh, LAPC-I. Love it. One with the connector box just sold for $800 on eBay.

  9. I love my 486, but it's a limited platform that I wouldn't recommend to someone wanting only *one* DOS computer. It's not really capable of playing later, CPU-intensive DOS games (Descent, Duke3D, Quake). Maybe a 486DX-100 would allow for an okay experience (not for Quake), but I'd still aim for a more recent CPU.

    Again, if you plan to have only one retro build, go for an AMD K6-2+ based system on a Super Socket 7 motherboard. It's not cheap, but the versatility is worth it. You can then use a program called SETMUL to set the multiplier in a range of CPUs (including the K6-2+) as well as turn the caches off and on -- all from the command line. You will then be able to slow your PC down to 486 speeds, giving you the ability to play any DOS game that is not too fast on a 486. This route will require you to source a good video and sound card as well. If you think you're going to want to play any FPS Windows games, you're better off with a Pentium 3 but will lose the SETMUL functionality.

    I don't recommend a laptop for DOS gaming, but if you want to go down this route, you need a laptop with video that has good DOS compatibility. They're not all the same. Any S3 graphics (Trio64, Virge) will be a good choice. And you want to look for a laptop with Yamaha OPL3 sound or a good clone. It's hard to connect a controller to laptops because most lack a game port. Some may have USB, but then you're into late Windows 95 territory. You don't need super-high screen resolution because you won't be playing most DOS games at a resolution higher than 640x480 (most below that). A 1024x768 screen is ideal. I have a Toshiba Tecra 550CDT that is a very nice DOS gaming laptop.

    Ill keep you in mind. It currently still works fine? Where in Wisconsin are you? I go up to Kenosha a couple of times a month.

    I'm on the other side of the state -- Eau Claire. Yes, I have a few CECHAs that work fine but am afraid to use them. I took apart a CECHE to learn how to replace the thermal paste but couldn't get the heat spreader off the die. So no rush -- whenever you have the time and inclination, let me know. Thanks!
