  1. Agreed. My Saturn has 3 main types of games: 2D shooters (i.e. shmups), light gun games (chiefly House of the Dead and Virtua Cop), and Capcom fighters. Sure, there are a few others thrown in (Panzer Dragoon 1 & 2, Sega Rally, Metal Slug, the Sega Ages games), but that's it. I shied away from 3D with the Saturn and the PS1 with just a handful of exceptions.
  2. The Virtual Boy was hot garbage. And even though I had fun with the N64, I really envied my friends who had the PS1 instead. Other than that, I'd say both the DS and PSP were major disappointments. I moved on from contemporary gaming after that back to the real joy: classic gaming. Not contemporary, but I'd say my worst retro purchase was the Super Cassette Vision. I had never gotten rid of a machine faster than that one. I also had buyer's remorse from picking up a NGCD that ended up not working. That was a ten year headache trying to get it fixed. Ended up selling it just recently.
  3. "Snezz" just sounds terrible, like a pathetic half-sneeze. BBIAB and AFK were much more common in the IRC days, although it did bleed over a bit into early chat lingo. Can't say I've seen either in a long time.
  4. IIRC, there were a handful of acronyms BITD that were so common that they needed a shorthand, which, IMO, were necessary to keep the conversation moving. I don't really care for how everything became an acronym, though. I even prefer to say e.g. Super Nintendo instead of SNES. Or at best Super NES. Acronymization is pretty much overkill now, especially since folks turned against capital letters: funny af just looks like a typo. Anyway, I'll BBIAB. /me is afk.
  5. I think it's OK to ask how the 32X would have fared if Sega didn't split its attention, but assuming that Sony didn't exist is just nonsense. Sony exists. There's no point in this exercise if we're just going to ignore major players on a whim. WHAT IF NINTENDO AND ATARI AND NAMCO AND COLECO AND AND AND DIDN'T EXIST????!? THEN SEGA #1 IN TEH WORLD!!11!!one!1
  6. Red Faction was the first thing I thought of. Gauntlet just beats out Zelda's burnable bushes, too.
  7. I'd say there's enough overlap between GB and GBC to warrant discussion as a single system, but I agree that the GBA is an entirely different beast, appealing to different tastes and ages, and the only reason they're lumped in together is because you can play GB and GBC games on a GBA. It's completely different tech, though, and the difference between the GB/GBC and GBA is as stark as the Nintendo is to the Super Nintendo or the Master System is to the Genesis. Just because you can get an adapter and play Master System games on a Genesis doesn't mean the two systems are really comparable in any way that would foster discussion. At least that's how I see it. We're clearly in the minority!
  8. Millennials are old enough that they're often considered boomers now, too.
  9. A PS2 also plays PS1 and PS2 games and never needs firmware updates or connects to some online portal. Time to come back to the simpler times!
  10. Honestly, I blame Youtube. Yeah, the creators suck, but the platform gives them a voice. If not for greed, we'd be in a much better place.
  11. It's good that you're taking your 5200 out for a walk. People don't realize how important it is for consoles to regular physical exercise.
  12. I always thought it was children driving those algorithms. But it might also be the dumbest in society, too. One of the many reasons I just don't watch any Youtube unless I know I'm looking for a particular video. "Youtubers" are just not on my radar.
  13. Many 8/16/32 bit 2D pixelated graphics games are actually decidedly modern, and would be an odd duck among actual older games. Doesn't mean they can't be fun, but retro style is more than just 2D graphics. And some games, like the New DKC ones, have a more retro feel even if the graphics are slightly more modern.
  14. The original idea predates this one. See this link with a different interview. (I skip the spoiler in the quote, but warning for those who don't want it to be spoiled to not click on the link.)
  15. Strongly recommend season 1. Fun fact, the Duffer Brothers had originally wanted to make it only a single season. While parts of 2 and 3 are enjoyable, s1 is perfection.
  16. Man, oven roasted brussels sprouts with aioli was all the rage for a hot minute in some of the trendy spots. I don't see it as often, but it's so good. If all you ever had was boiled brussels sprouts, then you've never had them at all. Sauteed or oven roasted and salted showed me a completely different side to the veggie, and they're damn delicious that way. Heck, I'd rather eat them raw than boiled.
  17. Yep, opcode's Ninja Princess. I think the original version is the arcade, right? Thinking of Sega reminded me of Twinkle Tale and Monster World IV, both of which have female protagonists. And Twinkle Tale is such a fun shooter. Monster World IV's protagonist also reminds me of Shantae, but I never put much time into that. It seems to be regarded well enough. A few other GBC games come to mind, including Wendy Every Witch Way and Alice in Wonderland.
  18. Brr, I meant Rondo on the PC Engine CD, not Bloodlines. And yes, she's a playable character in the Saturn version of SotN: https://castlevania.fandom.com/wiki/Maria_Renard/Symphony_of_the_Night/Saturn
  19. Some great games here. Super Metroid is one of my top 10 all time favorites. Ignoring others in the series you named, I would definitely include Guardian Legend, Portal, Final Fantasy VI, and Castlevania Bloodlines and Symphony (Maria Renaud). Great games, great female protagonists.
  20. 99% of the games I've looked at have a walkthrough. Especially retro stuff. Maybe newer stuff isn't getting that treatment? But that's the whole purpose of the site. FAQs about various games. I remember getting on there back in 97 or so, so it has always been that way. If what you say is true, that newer games don't have guides, then that's a real shame.
  21. NFS Hot Pursuit II on the PS2 is one of my favorites, and the last game before they got silly with customization. Just give me some cool cars and let me drive! Instead of going forward, I ended up going backwards. There are a bunch of good arcade-style DC racers: Crazy Taxi I & II Metropolis Street Racer Re-Volt (cart-ish) Tokyo Xtreme Racer 1 & 2 Vanishing Point (underrated!) Thinking about it, I wonder if something like NFS, Vanishing Point, etc. are less "arcade racers" and more "console racers," but they're definitely not sim racers or even sim-lites.
