Hello, I've got Protector/SE, and BattleSphere Gold. I've not actually tried the other bypass solutions to-date. JustClaws.

What is the most addictive game on the jaguar ?
justclaws replied to jagpaul's topic in Atari Jaguar
How about: "I'll just have a little game before the Millenium party starts... [...] ...how did it get to be 2003?" addictive. :-) http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/27544.html or worse: http://news.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/emergingt...,2123719,00.htm or even worse: http://www.sptimes.com/News/010301/Hillsbo...y_in_deat.shtml Of course, at least Sony gets the bad press now, not Atari. http://www.gamersmark.com/news/2002/04/1/1101/ Maybe Atari is best out of gaming these days, modern players are just not experienced with games with real game-play, it's too risky. Save man-kind. Hide your Atari. The game-play is too much... Cheers, JustClaws. -
What is the most addictive game on the jaguar ?

Defender 2000 deserves a vote. I know that one more go, and I'll beat those alien swine... Of couse for addicitive frustration, I'd vote for Flipout too. Oh, and Cannon Fodder.... grrr. -
Hello, 1) The Jaguar Server is a discontinued item, that was a complete development kit for the Atari ST, using a cartridge port plug-in, and a specific modification to the Atari Jaguar. See my site... It was a commercial hardware modification, around 50 made. 2) The BJL (Beyond Jaggy Lines) is a free solution for Jaguar fans to allow uploading home-brew code from a computer to a Jag. It involves EITHER replacement Jaguar boot ROM modification, (download the image for free, and you get the EPROM, from any source, and do the modification yourself, or get an expert to...) http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Byt...te/4242/jaguar/ [OR] Buy a copy of Protector SE from Songbird Productions, and get a great game with the BJL loader built-in to the game. You don't get quite the same debugging support, but it's ideal for home- brew developers and you don't need to modify the Jaguar at all. http://www.songbird-productions.com/ [OR] Wait for the next cartridge game or CD game to be released. At least some of the new games will also have BJL "embedded". I suggest Bastian (as author) patent the expression "BJL inside"! 3) For StarCat's CD of source code and Jaguar developer tools, why not just get the CD from him. He accepts Paypal, and he can ship world-wide. Just Visit StarCat Developments web-site. http://www.atari-jaguar64.de/ **** In the interest of fairness, in Thunderbird's absence, until recently you could also track-down a copy of BattleSphere, and then buy the JUGS (Jaguar Unmodified Game Server) add-on software and serial-port adapter) and an Atari Jag-Link kit, and use that to achieve similar upload capability to Protector SE/BJL. Alternatively you could track-down a copy of BattleSphere Gold (which came with the JUGS software included) and again, an Atari Jag-Link kit. (You only need half a kit, and a Jaglink cable.) **** Scatologic is unfortunately no longer selling these items. **** JUGS does not include any Atari development tools on the CD, so even if you have it, then you still need to get hold of the CD of tools that Starcat created, or download the same tools from one of various web-site that host the critical files. However, the CD contains lots of useful stuff collected together and also lots of unique source code from StarCat, great value! How is this relevant to the discussion about Matthias' "Final Card"? Well, amonst the useful things which it will provide, along with the CD bypass functionality, Flash ROM functionality, ethernet network support, web-server and more, it will also feature a BJL loader..... However, why wait? Go out and find a solution now, play today! Cheers, JustClaws.

Hello, I think I have none of those, I only got the CD BIOS off somebody else a few months ago, but I'll have a search. Most likely what I've got is the same as you've got already. Sounds interesting. Is it a utility or part of some game project? I've discovered a few months ago that the CD section of my own manual is very out-of-date on the subject of the CD. You're using the copy that StarCat published as a PDF, or an original Atari one? I'm sure other Jaguar developers would be interested in this thread and maybe somebody knows enough to help, as I say, to-date most people just loaded normal code from BJL/Alpine into RAM off CD. If I've missed the background to this thread, something about your projects, then I'm sorry, but to me it sounds new and interesting... Cheers, JustClaws.

Firstly, if you are a member of the group, you can read his messages. To compile and build the existing DOOM is the first step. If you can do that, which we can, then you could modify the sources to make it work in a different way. We are at that stage, but that's not anything new. What is missing to make a new game, rather than a revised version of the old game, is to create a new WAD file with none of ID's in it. If somebody could do that in Jaguar format, we'd have a new game. Cheers, JustClaws.
-
Hello, Well to my knowledge, nobody in the group was trying to release a commercial version. Songbird tried, and could not, so they opened the source with ID permission to the community. Somebody could! I think the ideal would be to release a 4MB ROM image of a new DOOM+ that could be used with an emulator, or which somebody could burn onto ROM, or upload to a Flash ROM. Anybody can take the source and work with it. The important thing is the restriction over avoid any ID WAD file. Cheers, JustClaws.
-
Reminder: The Jaguar WAD file format is different to the standard one. Correcting the bugs and things is simpler than create a new WAD, but ID will not allow a release of DOOM with their WAD in it. This means a new WAD needs to be created, and this is not done. Unfortunately when the group, which is an open to anybody development forum for Atari Jaguar, was created, Thunderbird declined the invitation to join, repeatedly, because some other people he did not care to identify were already in the group. There was good reason for this, I am sure, it's just a sad fact. To my knowledge, nobody. I uploaded the NUON source code a while ago, but all the enthusiastic people who wanted to work on the source code seem to have found it too difficult in the end. Matthias Domin has done the most, he uploaded new Makefiles and bug-fixed startup sources, and built a new version. He wrote all his findings to the group, but other people have not helped... Cheers, JustClaws.

It wasn't meant to be a "how high can you p1ss contest", it was a joke playing on the fact that some people are always going on and on about the importance of gold plated edge connectors on carts! Thus, I'd always use my gold card, and not my platinum card. Cheers, JustClaws.
-
For optimum performance, make sure it's a GOLD card. JustClaws.
-
Hello, Hey, if that cartridge seems dead, don't bin it, please put it in the post to me, and I'll take good care of it. I need a few shells for a forthcoming (but still quite distant) project myself, and if anybody else has any dead cartridges, please get in touch. In return, I'll send you something in due course too. Send me a private note! Thanks! JustClaws.

Hello, Yes, and no. The Jaguar checks every cartrige that is inserted, and if the cartridge does not checksum properly, it displays a red screen. Yes, nothing will happen at this point, power off, and try it again. Red indicates a problem with the cartridge. However, cartridges are practically indestructable, and it normally just means that the edge connector of the cartridge is dirty. Just remove and replace the cart a few times, make sure it's fully "home", and everything will work. I guess it's been in storage for a while, and has got dirty, but once you've got it working and in action every day I'm sure it will rock! Cheers, JustClaws.

Hello, Are the CD's going to be made available separately at some point? It would be great to see some original sources, but I have an Alpine already, and I can't afford another really, just to get the 3 CD's... I'd really love a 4MB Alpine myself, my own is only a 2MB. I'd not dare to try Glenn's upgrade to 4MB, thank goodness for Flash ROMs! Cheers, JustClaws.

Protector SE Bypassing Problem. Can Anyone Help?
justclaws replied to LamontCranston's topic in Atari Jaguar
Hello, From one Led Zeppelin fan to another, rock on. Well that's completely original behaviour to me. I've go the game, and I also play-tested it, and it's always worked just fine for me, and I've got a few different CDs, so I'd really suspect the CD itself. All good advice. However, you don't say what the outcome of these tests was... Also, you don't say what CD you were trying to boot, that would help, or was it all the CDs? If it was American Hero or Painter, then it's most strange. Same blue background both times? Did you hold down a key to call the CD-boot, you don't need to on Protector SE, it auto-detects the CD. It sounds like a duff CD... Well as I said, it's news to me. Great service by Carl though shipping you 2 replacements, wow! Let us know if you find a solution though... Cheers, JustClaws. -
I'd back you on this, I think that's definitely the best course of action. Randomly blocking people for bidding doen't seem effective, and if he is responsible that means he's broken the EBay rules so he'll be banned. Hey Scott, it would be great if you wanted to just chat in the forums about Jaguar life and times, or contribute anything, you're not going to be stigmatised as Doug's mate, people would welcome you here, but let's just leave the T'Bird sagas to the past, for wounds to heal. I would also encourage others to leave the "T'Bird wars" in the past, and get back to normal Jaguar discussion, what is done is done now. I think locking argument threads is helping to damp down the flames. Cheers, JustClaws.

Hey, I actually had a lot of fun with Aircars, I really like the tanks that come over the hills, I like the "die often, all action" type of game. On Checkered Flag, I was bitterly disappointed by that, really I think the camera killed that, it never felt fast like Virtua Racing, although I guess polygon pushing was similar. A great pity yes! Actually, you know if Aircars story had been revised, to a good old tank battle, perhaps set on the Pacific islands, with the enemy being the forces of some imaginary fascist leader, then it could have been great. A game more like a WW-II Tank Commander game, forest battles, slower moving tanks, realistic colouring... so it could have featured urban, jungle, desert and snow too... I'm sure the game engine would have handled that quite fine, and the missions could be set in various locations without any hassle, the edges of the gameplay could be the island edges, or minefields, or rivers, I really like WW-II style tank games! Anyway... imagine Aircars as a tank game of the future. The smoke and things don't work well, but could have been fixed I guess, they work as a concept if you free your imagination! I've got 2 copies, and won't sell, I'd even consider #3 too... as the game is quite fun played on a network as a deathmatch. Cheers, JustClaws.

Hello, Well on the first one, I heard from a former developer that they'd been asked to help with the conversion, can't remember who, but the deal didn't go ahead, so I think that game isn't finished at all. I've never heard of the second game. It would be nice if some day that Brett Hull Hockey game saw the light of day, but I guess it's more likely to get lost or the cart destroyed before it does, if it's only on Flash ROM. Flash ROMs have a sad tendency to self-destruct which worries me. Likewise a CD-R has a rather tenous life, just one scratch... The Dragon's Lair 2 CD, Readysoft told me way back that the game was finished, and had been about to be released when Atari pulled the carpet on the Jaguar. However, Readysoft also went bust just around then too, and they pulled all the details from the site overnight in the same era. (I found the details on their site and contacted them - they thought it was hidden.) Who knows what the truth is. Cheers, JustClaws.

Hello all, That's absolutely brilliant news, I can't wait to investigate this ROM! You've demonstrated a generosity to the Jaguar community that is sadly lacking elsewhere, you're real heroes of the Jaguar history. Thanks Jason, Beyond Games, and Albert. Can I take screen-shots of this for my own web-site, to add to my own prototypes pages? I remember certain other developers who shall remain nameless, having little good to say about Beyond, but I think they produced a great game, and my previous contacts with them were always very positive, although I can imagine it wasn't easy getting them to actually release the ROM. I remember getting cheats was slow! Cheers, Richard.

I take the point, but I think he really, seriously, sincerely, believes he's almost infallible; is he right? Other people believe that he often majorly misrepresented the truth, a situation, or the views of other people, and such situations should not be left that way. People that do not know the full "story" of a situation will believe what they read, even if it's false, if not countered. The old idea of "turning the other cheek" isn't easy... If an innocent person is accused of a crime, should be refuse to plead his innocence? Will his innocence be proven by his refusal to plead in court? Should you stand by and see a friend get beaten up in the street, so as not to increase the level of street violence? No... defence is honorable! The thing is, Thunderbird could not bear to see anybody write something that he did not agree with, without putting them "right". Arguments have not started in response to his posts, but in his responses to other posts! If he could express opinions, instead of dictating "the law", no problem. I do, however, think he often has no idea how he has caused offence, but his short-sighted perceptions as to the feelings of others cannot be an excuse repeatedly for ignoring advice and sincere peace requests. Cheers, Richard / JustClaws.

Albert, I think you did the right thing, Thunderbird has not been silenced, he was not barred at JI-2, (which has been pretty flame-free since he "left") so he could post there, he's decided not to do so, I guess because he wanted to be a big fish in the most popular pond. That is fair enough, if that's his thing, fine, but I think it's a pity really. You warned him, explained, ask nicely, warned him, it went on... It will be interesting to see if these mystery developers who have been supposedly working on the game "Arachnoids" (and whom only Thunderbird knows) but who are not Thunderbird related, so he says, ever "appear" or if anything is ever released. I've been very doubtful that these mystery developers are any different from the mystery English developers that Thunderbird said were working on a way of loading home-brew games- and when JUGS was released, JUGS turned out to be a feature of BattleSphere, even though Thunderbird had sworn it wasn't so. A joke he said! Possibly, with Thunderbird no longer pouncing on anybody who starts to discuss a technical topic with his "I know better, but I'm not telling you how" messages, people can get back to some nice technical discussions, gaming discussions, and just plain old fun. I stopped posting in discussions because I got sick of getting into stupid arguments, I was taught as a child to listen to other people, respect their views, but to form my own. I don't believe that it's been fun for most people, to see so many threads dragged into oblivion by his superior attitude. The only way to avoid provoking an argument was not to post at all, and I wasn't even against him, Doug even wrote he considered me neutral, not antagnostic too. It's no fun for anybody to keep seeing forums fill with argument! The really sad thing is that he never realised that he could have established an entirely different and more long last reputation in the community of the future by actually helping people, not just trading off the past, and keeping secrets from the future. No need to release source - just real hints, and tips, maybe... he kept saying he wanted to, but refused every opportunity. (*) Note that if no future 4Play titles are to be released, this clears up the BSG save-game compatibility issue which was really a sticking point for home-brew developers; sad, truly. Time goes on, people are learning and developing new things, cool new things. His part in networking and sound(*) of 4Play's BattleSphere was significant, and will always been seen so, but the nature of things is that progress is made, wheels reinvented, new developers arrive. 4Play were slow, but they persevered. (*) Note that the Sinister Developments music/sound engine is an excellent piece of code, released as source from their Atari-days commercial projects. It's compatible with standard MOD files, unlike the 4Play sound engine. Painter was a clear demonstration that great gameplay and music aren't dead... Perhaps we'll actually see Thunderbird enter the 2600 scene, he said he wanted to, but had no time due to Jaguar matters, I wish him good luck, a legacy in the Jaguar scene is assured. Let's not forget Scott though, the main "engine" man of 4Play BattleSphere, and Stefanie, the composer for BattleSphere. They left the "scene" years ago, so presumably they were already working on other platforms, now Doug joins them, I guess we should watch for a PC/Xbox release in < 5 years, and if it's BattleSphere, I'm sure many people will rejoice. Richard / JustClaws.

Hello, Just to add my observations... I can see that all the data is still there on the server, but somehow the server definitions on the web-server have gone. I would guess based on previous instances that the hosting company which seems to me pretty stupid has accidentally wiped it out again. Who knows? On previous occasions they've made it read only, changed the definition, restored an old version of the data over the top of it, screwed up PHP, and let the disk space fill-up completely, all at different times. That's why JI2 got it's unreliable tag in the past... Cheers, JustClaws.

Hello, I've got good news for you! Good news! It matters! Jaguar fans want to try new products like Painter today. When products are available, they buy them, budget permitting... When products are not, they buy other products, "retail therapy". Good news! The Jaguar IS most definitely available. I can get one from Ebay, from a variety of specialist retailers, or from various retro-gaming stores, it's effectively as easy here as it was when Atari sold them! Good news! I'm pleased to tell you that at least in Europe, the 2600 is still most definitely available. You can buy them from Ebay, (new) from some specialist retailers, retro-gaming stores, flea markets/car boot sales, and a host of other places. More products are coming out regularly! What should you tell somebody wanting a CD bypass to play Painter? Wait? Wait for a copy of BattleSphere Gold on Ebay? No, I'm sure you want Jaguar fans to have fun today, as well, they'll buy BattleSphere later if you can release more copies. After all, JUGS-DD is free with BattleSphere, so no issue there! Cheers, Richard / JustClaws.

Soon I guess then... but you have cops with radar guns I guess. The fastest I've been on a bike was 105 M/H, I've never had a very fast bike, a friend has a rather nice beast that does over 150 M/H, but I've never quite fancied doing as he does, and testing it out on the A99(?) ring road around Munich, that road gets far too hairy... Well I think I'll have to wait for an Atari badged Xbox from Infogrames to appear to do it justice on an Atari I'm afraid. I don't think anything any home-brewer could knock up could do it justice. Captain Chaos! Whew! Surely there has been a Cannonball Run game already... but it must have sucked because I don't remember it, and it's classic idea. Cheers, JustClaws.
