Agreed, I'm going have to try playing this collection in the store or on a friend's PSP before I drop $250 on it to see how effective the control really is. I won't be picking this up for a while in any event. A decent port of Mame for the GP32 is finally coming out this weekend and that should keep me occupied until PSP prices come down. And yeah, why has Jr. Pac-man never made it into any of the Namco Museum releases? Or Pac-man Plus? --Jason

I got my Xbox modded about a month ago but I'm just getting around to trying out Mameox with it since I already have Mame32 on my computer. The problem is that I have Mameox on the Xbox but no way of getting the roms I want from my computer to the Xbox. I have router and in the past I've used FTP to transfer files, but for some reason, I wasn't able to FTP any thing last night. Is there any way for me to transfer my roms without using FTP? Could I just burn them to a CD or DVD and have the xbox copy them that way? Any help would be greatly appreciated. --Jason

I just tried it. What a great idea! I couldn't get the sound to work though. Also, my joystick wouldn't work. I opened up a file after my game called stdout and it said "Opened Joystick Zero" and "Opened Joystick One" so I'm not sure what's going on. Once again, thanks to whoever created this. --Jason

Check this website and see if this gentleman is still making PC Competitor Interfaces. The last update to the site appears to be March of 2003, but it's worth a try. The device is very simple. Breaking 300,000 on the original Pacman is tough, even if you're using patterns. It's even tougher on Pacman Plus. Forget about patterns since the fruit acts like an energizer and makes the monsters move randomly for a few seconds. Also the energizers sometimes only turn 3 of the monsters blue. You never know when only 3 will change or which one will remain its normal color. Pacman Plus is a serious challenge and I've spent years trying break this barrier. My final score was 317,940 and I made it to the 10th pancake (same as the 10th key. I've attached a zip of the .inp file below. I'm bumping this thread because I went back and read it and realized I had missed a goldmine of information the first time around. Anyone interested in the Lolo series should read the following site very carefully: http://home.nc.rr.com/charliebfinch/eggerland/ Thanks to Gafami Yag Mai for that link, which contains a detailed list of nearly a dozen other Lolo and similar games that were released in Japan. The games that caught my attention first were the Japanese versions of Lolo 1 & 2. I thought they’d be the same as the American versions except they’d have Japanese writing, but according to the site they feature different and allegedly more difficult boards, as if the American games weren’t hard enough. I got the Japanese roms, put them on my newly modded Xbox, and holy crap the boards are indeed more difficult! Many of them I’d never seen before, but I recognized a few early in the game that appeared much later in the American version. If you’re interested in trying these “new” games, read the above site and/or remember the following to avoid confusion: The US Game Adventures of Lolo was never released in Japan. The game we know as Lolo 1 is based on the “Eggerland” games that were released in Japan. HAL spruced up the graphics, picked out 50 of the relatively easier boards and released it in the US. Also: Lolo 2 (US) = Lolo 1 (JP) with different and more difficult boards and Lolo 3 (US) = Lolo 2 (JP) with different and more difficult boards. As of last night, I’m on the 5th Level of Lolo 1 (JP). Looks like I still have a long way to go in this series before I can truly declare final victory... –Jason

Agreed. It would take a miracle for you to make it past level 3 on NES Arkanoid without cheating and without the paddle controller. --Jason

I got this game with my new xbox a few days ago. I'm enjoying the Konquest mode because it teaches you so many moves and lets you practice them over and over until you get them right. It's great for me since I am not used to playing these newer and more complicated games. --Jason

First of all, I’m sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I did read the entire thread and I want thank everyone (well...almost everyone ) for their responses. I’ve decided to get an Xbox and will be picking it up soon, maybe even this weekend. Not that it really matters, but here are some the reasons for my decision. 1. I’m a big fan of the Mortal Kombat series. That’s what I was thinking of when I said I like fighting games. I really want to get MK Deception and Deadly Alliance. Also, I tried Dead or Alive 3 and loved it. 2. Halo. I know I said I don’t like FPS, but even some of my friends who are dancers and don’t really like video games have been saying OMG!!!!1111 YOU HAVE TO PLAY HALO!!!!!!! So I want to give it a try. 3. I like the fact that you don’t have to worry about Memory cards with Xbox, and that an adapter is available to use a PS controller on the Xbox. The standard Xbox controller did seem awfully bulky to me. 4. Price: It’s only $150 now, even if I don’t like it, I can pick up a PS2 later for even less. 5. I like that fact that it can be modded and can run emulators. Maybe I’ll finally get to play Mame on my television set. Yes, I’ve heard modding can be tricky, I’ll be careful. Thanks again! --Jason

Ok guys, I need to be educated once again. I have finally given in and decided to buy one of the modern systems after playing a couple fighting games on an X-box last week. I need some opinions and recommendations on which system is better: PS2 or X-box. (I’m not really interested in a Game Cube.) Here’s some other info. and a few inquiries that may influence your advice. I do still have a PS1 and a few games that I like to play for it. Will a PS2 really play all PS1 games? I know PS2 is also a DVD player. Will the X-box also play DVD's? I enjoy fighting games, puzzle games and RPG’s but not first person shooters because they pretty much all look the same to me. I’m not really into sports games either. Please help someone who is a relative noob when it comes to modern gaming! –Jason P.S. -- I'm gonna take a wild guess and say that much blood has already been shed over the X-box/PS2 debate. I used an Atari 2600 controller called the Slik Stik. (Obviously not the same thing as the gargantuan arcade style controller that costs hundreds of dollars.) I'm still using the PC Competitior Interface I bought a couple years back that allows me to use Atari joysticks for Mame. I do have the Stelladaptor as well, but I only use that to play 2600 games on my computer. --Jason

That is my highest score in over 20 years of playing the game and is good for 5th all time according to Twin Galaxies. The current record is 1,004,000 so I am just 79,000 points away and I do have some good ideas on how to improve my score. If I manage to break a million on Mame, I'm gonna try and find the game in an arcade and go for the record. I am attaching a recording of tonight's effort. I used Mame32 .87 for this recording. Maybe someone here can educate a non-technically savvy person like me about the possibilites for emulation on these two systems. For example, if I knew that Mame could be ported to either one of them it would dramatically increase the likelihood that I would buy one. My Gp32 has been great for Nintendo and Commodore 64 games, but I've never been able to get the Mame emulator for that system to work right. --Jason

Atari 2600 Millipede is amazing! Definitely one of the best games made for the system. I've never played the 5200 version, so I can't comment on it. --Jason

I'm surprised you're stuck that early in Lolo 1, which is rather tame compared to some of the boards in the second two games. Keep trying, you can do it! I'm going to give this Moai Kun game a try this weekend. --Jason

Yesterday, on my flight home from a long weekend in Seattle, I finally beat Adventures of Lolo 3. I’ve been playing the game for several months now on my GP32 and it may be the toughest game I’ve ever completed. I wish there were more games in this series! Anybody have any stories on their efforts to beat this game or the other two games in the series? Can anyone recommend a similar game, preferably from the 8-bit era? --Jason

bump Right now I have an auction going for what is probably the most valuable item in my Atari 2600 collection, a boxed and near mint copy of Montezuma's Revenge. Auction This is a fantastic game that is not one of the easiest to find loose. It's very tough to find complete with the box and instructions and everything in virtually perfect condition. My highest score was 78 thousand-something. I don't have proof this week though as I didn't bother to record any of the games. I never made it past the 4th floor, in fact I only made it that far twice. The even numbered floors in this game are much harder!
