Domination of the current FPS genre - what's next?
Turbogfx replied to Turbogfx's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Maybe this thread will be transferred to the Modern Gaming section where it belongs? Go ahead and report it to the admin. -
Not sure if you're serious, but yes, NES Legend of Zelda has 2 quests with different dungeons (in different locations) & harder enemies I'm dead serious, no kidding, I didn't know at all! Wow... That just blew my mind...

OK, this is probably a "n00b" question, but: what do you mean "both quests"? Is there a second one then?

As we are all aware, the FPS genre has become more and more popular during the course of the last decade. Various competitive "pro" leagues have spawned over the years, with kids and adults fragging, tea-bagging and cursing eachother online. Surely we all have experienced the positive and the negative aspects of the FPS genre and it's online component. Arguably, the FPS genre as we know it know reached its pinnacle in terms of popularity with the release of CoD:MW3 and Battlefield 3. But what's next, and more importantly: what do YOU think will happen next? 1. Do you think this genre will continue to be the center of attention over the next 10 years, or do you see players growing tired of playing the same old game formula over and over again, and perhaps shifting to other game genres? If yes, which would these genres be? 2. And what role do you think retro gaming will play in this future? Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Beat Super Castlevania IV yesterday. Great game, although I still prefer Dracula's Curse (CV III) on the NES.
-
I really love the early Castlevania series. My favorites are: 1. Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (NES) 2. Castlevania (NES) 3. Castlevania IV (SNES) Castlevania II: Simon's Quest probably has some of my favorite CV music. Overall, I love the art design of the NES CV games, and the music is simply unforgettable. Because of these timeless elements, the atmosphere of these old games still has a lot of appeal today. The controls maybe a bit stiff, but I actually like how these games play. They provide a great deal of challenge too! Castlevania is without a single doubt my favorite series on the NES. I play an old-skool CV game at least once a month. Don't have much affection for the newer installments though, so I don't really care where the series will go in the future The old titles are the ones that count for me.

What will you be playing this weekend?

This weekend, with a bit of luck, I'll be playing a Neo Geo CDZ I just bought :-) -
I beat Donkey Kong Country on the SNES last weekend. Fun game. Afterwards, I fired up DKC 2 and 3, but didn't find them likeable at all. Basically I found these sequels to be more of the same, but the style was really cheesy, up to the point that it's irritating instead of funny. I really don't get what the deal is with Rare.. I hear a lot of praise for them, but IMO a lot of their games are mediocre at best. There are of course exceptions, like DKC 1 for example.

How long did it take you to finish Bionic Commando? I started playing this once but it looked really long to me...

First game I recall renting at the local video store was NCAA Basketball on the SNES. Decent basketball game, but not spectacular either.

Beat Super Mario Bros. on the NES yesterday evening. Though cookie.

Does (did) the pack-in game matter?
Turbogfx replied to DesertJets's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Very true. I bought a brand new boxed TurboGrafX (European version) about a year ago. That one had Blazing Lazers as a pack-in game. I thought that one is brilliant. Still one of my favorite games on the console to date. That game showcases well what the TGX is good at: SHMUPS! Of course the TGX was released in a time when consoles had "mascottes". Can't call Blazing Lazers a mascotte, can you? But if having a mascotte as a pack-in game was the goal, they should have put in Bonk's Adventure in my opinion. R-Type would have been kick-ass as well though. Great port of the arcade version for the time! -
Discovered yesterday that I really like Contra / Probotector, but I'm really terrible at it. It's actually a lot harder than I initially thought!

This is great. Thanks high voltage!

Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. Super Mario World
Turbogfx replied to BillyHW's topic in Classic Console Discussion
Yeah don't get me wrong, I love SMW. I never owned an NES when I was little, but I did get an SNES, and SMW was the first console game I ever owned, and I loved it. However, now that I do own an NES, and having played both games recently, I just feel SMB3 to be a bit more "influential" for the series and perhaps for all platform games to come. I think that a lot of people here in fact love both games equally, so the criterium on which to choose one game over the other depends on what you consider to be most critical element to a game when talking about which one is "more important". And to me, since both games have excellent gameplay, graphics, sound and whatnot, the historical influence of a game is really the only criterium left I personally can think of that might make me prefer one game over the other. -
What was YOUR very first computer?

iBook G4 -
My favorite one is the old skool Gameboy Classic version. It's such a big part of my youth, I just can't think of any other version that would be more dear to me :-)

I hear you. Same here :-(
-
Found a few new ones at which I suck: - Chip 'n' Dale Resue Rangers - Ducktales Both for the NES :-(
-
OK, I'll post some youtube links later on, but my all-time favorite soundtracks are: 1. Castlevania: - CV 1: Wicked Child - CV 2: Bloody Tears - CV 3: Vampire Killer 2. Starwing / Starfox: Pretty much all tracks The map- / navigation-screen music is epic in itself...

The Ugliest Looking Game System Ever!
Turbogfx replied to fdurso224's topic in Classic Console Discussion
- NES toploader - SNES (US console) - 2nd form Sega Genesis / Master System -
Hi, Does anyone on this forum have any experience with Pong consoles (preferably released in Europe)? I'm looking for one of these consoles but I've heard that some of them tend to break easily or have a bad rep regarding gameplay / durability. Can you recommend any Pong machine in specific with which you consistently have a good gameplay experience? So criteria would be: - affordability - durability - ease of use (controller-wise) Thanks a lot! Regards, Turbogfx

While I would not consider them as a separate system, I gotta say, I love the Super Game Boy. Nowadays, it's the only way I still play my Gameboy games. I generally don't like playing on a handheld console (prefer TV + couch), but I do like the Gameboy software library. So for me, it's the greatest SNES accessory!

Super Mario Bros. 3 vs. Super Mario World
Turbogfx replied to BillyHW's topic in Classic Console Discussion
I would vote SMB3 because in my opinion it defined the SMB-series in a more significant way than SMW in terms of gameplay elements. SMW felt more like a "16-bit remake" to me than the "new major milestone for the series" (which rather was Mario 64, IMO). Besides, for the SNES era, personally I would pick SMW2: Yoshi's Island as the better SMB game - any day.
