  1. Finished 2 NES titles this weekend: - The Legend of Zelda - Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse CV3 was a living hell to beat... I'd say it was as hard as Ninja Gaiden... But one of the best NES games I've played to date!
  2. I'll give you my two cents on the systems that I actually own. I'll give you more than 5 on the NES and SNES though, to make up for my lack of systems Atari 2600 - Yar's Revenge - Robot Tank - Ms. Pacman - Q*Bert - Missile Command NES - The Legend of Zelda - Super Mario Bros. 3 - Castlevania (I or III) - Mega Man 2 - Kirby's Adventure - Metroid - Bionic Commando - Contra - Ninja Gaiden SNES - The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past (on of my favorite games of all time) - Super Castlevania IV - Super Metroid - Chrono Trigger - Starfox - Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island - Donkey Kong Country
  3. Hi all, Living in Europe, I own a PAL TurboGrafX (running only NTSC TGX-16 games) which has a 50Hz video output to comply with outdated European video standards at the time the machine was released. However, the implementation of this video output standard makes my NTSC games run slower, which is sort of a pain. So after unsuccessfully searching the web for a solution, I figured I'd ask my question on these forums instead: Does anybody here have knowledge of a modification for the PAL TurboGrafX that will make your NTSC games run at their native 60Hz, instead of the altered 50Hz? Thank a lot in advance ! Cheers, Jeroen
  4. 1st gen: Atari 2600 2nd gen: Vectrex 3rd gen: NES 4th gen: SNES 5th gen: PlayStation 6th gen: PS2 7th gen: Xbox 360
  5. Actually, none. I have all the consoles I wanted, Vectrex being my latest addition.
  6. My first video game system was a classic Game Boy. My childhood friend had an NES as well. Altough I loved playing on my Game Boy, I always wished for an NES, but never got it. Then at some point, a few months after it got released, I got an SNES, which of course made me forget quickly about that "outdated NES". It is only now, about 20 years later, that I'm discovering all the classic NES games I wasn't able to play back in the day, now that I have my own NES, finally :-) And the funny thing is that, altough I have never owned one when I was a kid, I somehow feel a very strong connection to the console and its games. I love the 8-bit era.
  7. I sure think the Defender clone " Protector" looks fantastic. Ever watched that video on Youtube? Blew me away. I have a copy at home, it's just amazing.
  8. In terms of shopping, it's most definitely NES. I just started my collection on that console, so I still need a lot of classics. So that's really fun. In terms of playing, it's usually the Vectrex which draws my attention. :-)
  9. I would have said the exact same thing. Actually, I have bought my Vectrex for $ 20 from some guy who actually thought it was broken!
  10. $ 50 for a working Vectrex is a great deal, so congrats on that! I got 6 Vectrex games + a controller from a friend in exchange for some Belgian beer. A few months ago I bought a working Vectrex with 6 games (no overlays however) and a controller for around $ 30, which was a steal. In fact, the guy who sold it to me thought that it was broken. Apparently it wasn't :-)
  11. I'd have to say Hockey. Gotta love Blades of Steel :-)
  12. Games beaten this week (all NES), for the very first time: - Kirby's Adventure (not 100% unfortunately) - Castlevania - Ninja Gaiden Ninja Gaiden was the most difficult without question. I'd like to think of it as the "R-Type of 2D action platformers". I never played these games when I was a kid because I didn't own a NES back then, but the art, music and gameplay depth of these games are still very solid by today's standards. Easily three of my favorite games on the NES.
  13. This cart is the one I still want for my Vectrex collection. I've heard so many good things about it. I'm ordering it next month.
  14. I'll share my take on this topic. I'm a gamer in first, a "collector" second. And even then, I will gladly admit that I'm not a "real" collector. Here's why: I do A LOT of research on classic home consoles, and based on this information I decided which consoles I would want to own. This is a fixed list, and the only 2 pieces of hardware which are still on my wishlist are a consolized Neo Geo MVS and PERHAPS a Turbo Duo. Once I get "into" a certain console, I carefully research what the games are that I want to own for this console, disregarding entire the rarity of the game. I just try to figure out which games are classics, must-haves, and hidden gems for that console. Also, when I buy these games, I don't really care if they come boxed, with or without the manual, as long as they work properly, that's cool with me. If I can get a complete or mint version of a game at a good price, I won't hesitate, but for me, that's not really the most important thing. The most important thing is the joy that I get out of playing these games. For me, it's also about discovering the history of the medium, the story behind these games. If I would ever pass my "collection" over to my kids (should they be interested), I'd be happier to give them exclusively games that are actually great and fun to play, or that were regarded as "revolutionary" or "groundbraking" at the time, rather than swamping them with a boatload of games that are crap. At least, that's my view on it. I'm not building a "complete" collection of anything. I'm rather building my own favorite selection of home systems and games, and I'm being very realistic about the means I have at my disposal to build it.
  15. I'm kinda new to the forums, so I'll post my current top 3 finds: 1. Last weekend I bought a working Vectrex with controller and 6 games (all loose carts though) for € 25 (around $ 33). That was a real steal, I think :-) 2. Last year I got 6 Vectrex games (all complete) from a friend for 6 bottles of Belgian beer (brand was Leffe Blonde if you want to know :-) ) --> Hyperchase, Cosmic Chasm, Bedlam, Fortress of Narzod, Berzerk and Spike, along with a broken but boxed Vectrex with a working controller. Another friend who's brilliant at electronics is attempting to repair the Vectrex CAUTIOUSLY :-) 3. A few months ago I bought a mint condish complete copy of Neutopia for the TurboGrafX-16 for € 20 (around $ 26). I'd say that was very reasonable given the prices they charge on eBay.
  16. This looks very promising. I'm keeping an eye on this topic. Good luck with the next phase!
  17. Alright guys it worked. I thoroughly cleaned the SC cart one more time and that did the trick. Man, is that game hard! Matt, yeah I know, some parts of the monitor carry a current of about 4800 Volts, so I'm definitely not touching that because I don't have enough knowledge of that kind of stuff. A very good friend of mine who is an absolute prodigy in electronics is working to repair a second Vectrex unit, and he's being really cautious too. We'll see what he can do but he's taking it slow to avoid accidents. Thanks for the help again guys. My Star Castle cartridge is now fully operational.
  18. Thanks Matt and TMOSteel. I'll clean the cart again and retry tonight. If that doesn't work I'll consider opening the cart or getting the multicart. You're absolutely right Matt, the Vectrex is a wonderful home console. It's captured my attention from the moment I first learned about it (about one year ago), and now I finally have a working copy in my game room, and I've absolutely fallen in love with its style, gameplay, graphics and sound design. Everything about this console just feels so right, if you know what I mean. In only a few days time, it's become my favorite console, hands-down.
  19. Hi all you Vectrex enthousiasts, Last weekend I bought a perfectly working Vectrex with 6 games for € 25 (less than 33 USD !!!) from some guy who thought it was broken. Excited as I was, I finally got a chance to test all the Vectrex I had collected up to that point. I recently purchased a Star Castle cartridge. FYI, it looks clean and fine from the outside. But whe I start it up on my Vectrex, the machine shows the game's title screen, then loads the first stage, but it only loads the "sprite" of my space ship. The machine doesn't load the Star Castle, none the of the "shields" and non of the hostile projectiles. On top of that, the game lets me rotate my ship, but when I push the "thrust" button, my ship ONLY moves from left to right over the center horizontal axis of the screen, no matter what direction the ship is pointed at. Is this a glitched/buggy/faulty cartridge? I cleaned it multiple times and all my other games work perfectly. It's strange that I can start the game, but that the machine doesn't load the game properly. Could this be the result of some region protection? I have a PAL Vectrex (I live in Belgium). Has anyone encountered this type of issue? Could you share your experiences on this topic with me? Thanks a lot in advance! Cheers, Turbogfx
  20. Here's my list: 1) Robot Tank 2) Missile Command 3) Ms. Pacman 4) Yar's Revenge 5) Q*Bert 6) Frogger 7) Mario Bros. Dig Dug 9) Warlords 10) Kaboom!
  21. My hi-score on Ms. Pac-Man is 83.660 ... it's been months now since I've played this score.. and still no progress.. I guess it's just not my game :-)
  22. Tempest Missile Command 2 And follow the people who would have liked to see paddle controller support for most racing and Space Invaders-style shooters.
  23. For the moment I only have a cheap 2600 Jr. to play on, so obvioulsy the Junior is the one for me. Although I plan on getting a nice 4-switch Vader very soon. Then I'll give my Junior to a good friend as a present, so we can try to beat each other's hi-scores. That should be fun
