  1. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Keep on having fun!

  2. Congratulations Atarian7. That is quite an impressive achievement. 100 patches! Larry
  3. Hey, congrats Jacob! Sorry I don't have any patches. Will a picture of one do?

  4. Thanks for the comments. Between you and Atarian7 I expect someone to achieve nirvana! If you play Kaboom! long enough, keep the paddle steady, keep your eyes on the bombs, don't blink and never let the bomber smile, you will attain true enlightenment and discover the four noble truths: playing the game is suffering, we suffer because we want a better score, we suffer more because it seems unattainable, to eliminate suffering we must get a higher score, therefore, the path is to keep playing games and never stop. Play on grasshopper!
  5. Anything is possible. But one of the reasons Activision games were good was that we sat in one lab, talked to each other, helped each other, and played each other's games all the time. It would be hard to do a game on my own.

  6. And you know that today is International Talk Like a Pirate Day:

Fifteen men on a dead man's chest — Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!

  7. Yes, I based Kaboom on Avalance by Dennis Koble who had made it while at Atari, but it never made it to market. I saw it when it was being tested.

  8. Actually, Doug Neubauer called me and asked about starting a company to build a new game machine. We talked to Jay and Jay's boss liked the idea and starting the ball rolling. I left before we had an office (it was still Hi-Toro then).

  9. 999,999 is correct. Todd Rogers did it live in Vegas in '82. Playing too much Kaboom? Not possible. My top 4: Dragster Grand prix Chopper Command Starmaster
  10. Aaarrg, matey! Ho, ho, ho, and a bottle of rum!

  11. Great job. The art and package are fantastic. And I loved your video review. 33 years! Wow.
  12. No. Just felt like it when I realized it has been 30 years since Kaboom! Sort of like being from silent films.

  13. Perhaps you did and I missed it. Thanks for listing them! Larry Kaplan should be proud that his game is still so popular. Yes, I am proud. And thanks for the recognition. I hope it is fun and not too frustrating. Larry
  14. To all of those who ranked Kaboom high, and especially to those that put it first, thanks. But I must warn you that playing Kaboom for long periods can open a small wormhole to 1981 and, if you fall through, you will have to live in a world with no iPod, iPhone, iPad or iNternet. The first 1G network is installed but cell phones weigh two pounds. The only computers are the Apple II, Commodore 64, TRS 80 and the Atari 800. VHS is king but you have to go to a store to pick up a movie to watch at home. The top grossing theater movie is Raiders of the Lost Ark. Harrison Ford has dark hair and he doesn't know Sean Connery is going to be his father. Calista Flockhart is still in high school. Ronald Reagan is president and Elijah Wood is born. And the VCS is just called the VCS. On the good side, your paddle controllers for the VCS are new and not worn out yet. For those who didn't rank Kaboom at all, you will have to play E.T. blindfolded until you beat it. Larry
  15. First, thanks for the compliments. I really had no idea so many people still play and write games for the 2600, and, like in Ed's case, take the time to learn to program a game from scratch. Ed's description of his experience was succinct and insightful and somewhat embarrassing. It took us three years to learn all the tricks needed to write a game as good looking as Ed's. The 2600 is an inspiring machine where, by complete serendipity, the hardware/software synergy is ideal. Programming a game is a very challenging one-person project (with a little help from friends for tuning, playing, coding, sounds, graphics, etc.). And coming up with a fun, playable and good looking game? And original? Don't remind me about Street Racer (Dave put salt on the wound when he did Grand Prix and Steve rubbed it in with Barnstorming).
  16. Fantantistic job, Ed. Great game play, graphics and sound. Plus an opening screen! Really an outstanding feat. Your post of the process is excellent, too. Thanks
  17. Fantastic job on Halo 2600!! A great game.
