In all honesty, you are better off paying for a modded system. If it is already modded you don't have to pay shipping to get it modded and you're ready to go. IF you buy an unmodded system, you'll likely have to pay shipping 3 times before it is all said and done and that really adds to the expense. From the seller, to the modder, back from the modder.
7800s are a good way to go. AV/svideo modded and maybe even modded for the SEGA Genesis power adapter and you've got a good machine that can play 2600 and 7800 games at a decent price. You can use 2600 controllers with it for the feel if you'd like. If I didn't have anything right now, that is how I'd go.
The 7800 even has some really killer titles, both homebrew and original.

Welcome to the club! Most of the good games are dirt cheap. Robotron is my favorite. If you play that one, set yourself up with two sticks on a table or use two SEGA pads. Don't forget to stock up on the awesome homebrews for the 7800. I'm dying to get my hands on Baby Pac-Man personally.
-
Is the red home icon part of the wallpaper or is it something the system places there? If it doesn't serve a purpose that is something I'll take out when I get time.
Label art would be awesome for the SD card roms. Can't imagine it would take much space on the card.

I hate that I can't help you. I would wager it would take a completely new pcb to make that work. At least the number pad functionality. Maybe this will get you a better response as most of the time I say dumb things and someone smarter will correct me!

Those labels on the carts look incredible! I'll have to adjust the screw holes up top for sure. what about the middle part where the PCB sits on the plastic, does that deter installation at all?

The middle lines up just fine. No problems there.

Sounds like the cart port doesn't even detect that a cart has been inserted.
That is what I think too, but that is strange for those two homebrews and 6 of my text label carts. The text label carts do have an odd configuration where the teeth connect to the system; maybe this is the problem?
The homebrews I dont get; I mean I understand they dont work, but those dont even get read by the system?
-
Ok, I know a lot of games will be sorted out eventually, but some games concern me because the screen never even goes black when they are inserted.
Is there a reason why the Retron77 wont even try to read Chetiry, Berzerk VE, or certain old text label games? Are the pcbs configured in such a way that the system cant tell theyre inserted? Or is there another reason the system just ignores them rather than going blank screen because it cant run it? Im sure Slot Machine would run if I put it on the sd, but the machine pretends the cart isnt there.
-
Whaaaaaat? That sounds very cool. Can you post some pics of the new patches when you get some? I would be down to order some definitely. I think making some for new homebrews would be sweet as well.

I grew up on Atari, but SEGA was my high school years and SEGA made a darn nice pad. The Genesis 6 and Saturn v2 pads are my all time favorites on any system.

So I got the bug to fix up some of my carts that were "nekkid". Of course two of the projects were a homeless Frogger and Kool Aid Man. My recent pick up of a Retron 77 kind of spurred this since I wanted to play those games, but didn't want my family grabbing uncovered pcbs out of the cart slot. Both games were in a yard sale box once upon a time and I've been waiting to house them.
Unfortunately, Parker Bros and M Network pcbs don't fit standard cart shells. So here is a little pic of my Kool Aid Man rehousing project. Plastic toothpicks to hold the pcb inside the shell and strategic LEGOs to keep the cart where it goes.
Credit for the awesome AA'ers who made this little project doable.

So share and care people... what have you done to get a game into a new home/cart shell?

My brother and I played a few games of Video Olympics and Super Breakout yesterday. We had a blast with Video Olympics even thought the paddles were a little jittery (probably the fault of my paddles). Wanted to play some Warlords but need another set of paddles.
Short answer, didn't notice any lag on the paddles. They behaved fine.

They look awesome, and I really love mine! I just got an order in last night and had to show off DK and Frogger. Parker Bros pcbs don't fit squat, but thanks to some LEGOs, epoxy and patience I now have a glow in the dark picture label Frogger! Not bad for a nekkid pcb I found at a yard sale. DK has been homeless since I put together my Double Dragon/Rampage multicart years ago and thought he would look very snazzy in pink with the 80's label art.

I hope this helps. The Supercart pcb was for the games that may or may not use Pokey, but they all have this T design. You can see here where the pcb overlaps the end label side screw wells. For Supecarts to fit and maybe others the back (thinner half of the cart shell) needs the top screw wells lowered so the pcb can lay flat on top of it and the shell can still be closed around it. I circled the problem area in the top photo.
Also, just wanted to share the results of my first two shells. I had a nekkid Frogger and DK7800 that had to have a new home. DK lost his shell to my Double Dragon/Rampage multicart years ago and Frogger's was destroyed when I found it in a yard sale.
Parker Bros pcbs don't fit anything btw. To get him in his new home took a cradle of LEGOs and a little epoxy, but I think the results look nice. Maybe Atari should have went with more colorful cart shells back in the day. It was the 80's after all.

Just wanted to share and say thank you!

Atari 7800 Proline "style" controllers work even though my actual ProLines do not. SEGA pads through 7800 adapters also work. Time Pilot worked as a rom, but not a cart. Does someone else have a Time Pilot to test?
-
Took longer than I thought to get it uploaded. Let me know if anyone has questions or wants me to test something. Paddle games do work with sticks/dpads. Indy 500 does not work with any controller I threw at it - paddle, driving, stick.
-
I could not get any of my EARLY release text labels to work. Miniature Golf, Slot Machine, and Hunt and Score would not work even though they are all reliable on my 7800 and heavy sixer. Granted the teeth on the pcb look very different than later releases.
Anyone else try any early/number text carts?

I was annoyed that the card was unreadable by my Mac.
Had to dig out my old XP laptop. -
I'll be posting the video tomorrow afternoon once I have a chance to work around my screaming children's footage.
For now I will say the following:
My Genesis pads all worked IF I ran them through the 7800 adapter. How swapping without an adapter did not work.
My ProLine did not work at all - go figure.
My Atari 7800 "NES pads" all worked including my older one modded by Ax.
My modded Space Invaders Plug n Play A7800 stick worked.
Bubsy ran off the SD card
Pitfall II ran off the SD card
Parker Bros games were very problematic in general. Very finnicky.
Solaris booted up and I think it works, but I really don't understand that game.
Kool Aid Man is unplayable.

Basic Programming booted up.
Freeway played fine.
Dungeon - NO
Stella's Stocking - NO
Berzerk VE - NO
Chetiry - NO
I'll post the video in the afternoon. The kids were a little more wired than usual tonight, so I didn't get as far as I would have liked.

My Berzerk VE is on a Harmony pcb. Ill be sure and test it too.
-
I would like to know if a Harmony Cart works and how well Bubsy: Kitt'N Kaboodle works.

Ill slap it on the SD and give it a spin. Hurry up UPS!
-
Not sure which joystick you got, but I received mine today and was testing out games when my joystick broke.

Be careful with it while reviewing.
Glad I have originals and a few aftermarket options. Im very anxious to see if 7800 pads work.
-
I will be glad to. Kool Aid Man is one of my favorites!
Also, I'll try to swap a Genesis pad after boot. I'll try that in menu and in game both ways.

Just sharing my R77 wallpaper. I made the border an empty transparent file and changed the selected invader to pink. LOVE the invader icons btw!
