  1. I also have a 7800 that hates M Network games. It also hates Berzerk and Berzerk VE as well as the 7800 PMP Collection (it goes straight to Scramble when I turn on the system.)

I wonder what makes so many of them so finnicky/flakey?

  2. Hi everyone!

I just picked up a Vader with a frayed coax. I thought no biggie; just crack it open and swap it out. Once I did, I realized that there was something else wrong. When I turn it on, it only shows an image for a second and it quickly goes black and white. Then it disappears completely. I managed to see the Pole Position logo and Superman over Atari Metropolis before it went dark.

Any helpful advice? Thanks in advance you guys.

  3. Another solution for players wanting wireless on the Retro Freak. I got this today. It is a Mayflash Wireless Wii to USB adapter. Works great. Very little lag. I didn't notice any during Super Mario playtest.

I am using my Wii Tatsunoko VS Capcom fightstick. It uses 3 AAA batteries. The RF sees it as a usb device.

  4. Well, I am not the programmer, we all have schedules and jobs and in my case kids. It will be when it is, is all I can say. I would love to be playing it myself, but my kids aren't going to potty train themselves. So it can't be done until I have the levels laid out to be programmed.

I do hope folks enjoy it once it is ready for prime time.

There has been some early movement work done, but I'm not sure when a playable rev will happen.

  5. Thanks guys! School just got out, so I'm home watching the kids. My wife is on vacation this week with us so no progress this week. I stopped for a bit due to another kidney stone and subsequent stomach problems caused by the meds they gave me for the stones. Finally feeling better. Just stopped in and saw this bumped and the Toki announcement, so

    i'm glad I checked in!

Hopefully, I'll have some fun stuff to show soon. I'm excited to get to Dr. Fluffy's lab! <- The cat.

  6. Nope. My Battletoads is immaculate. Failed on 2 Genesis model 1s, a model 2, both setups with and without 32X, a CDX, and the Retro Freak. The only thing it worked on was the @games. I think there is a security chip that is bad that causes the original hardware to think it is pirate or import.

  7. According to the specs my partner gave me, everything I'm calling for is graphically "legal." The palette resets for the status area with a break and if you count colors in background, foreground, and character sprites they fall in the realm of what a 7800 can do. I intentionally designed characters a little thin in places because the 7800 would taffy them in fat mode. I really love my rocket cat. Maybe one day he gets his own shooter or spin off.

  8. I gave up on thrifts. I'm pretty sure all decent finds end up on Goodwills auction site or pickers who get there right at open or "know somebody."

I just frequent the regular shops for things I can trade for what I'm looking for.

I've been collecting for over twenty years and finally had to resort to Amazon for NES MULE and Vice: Project Doom. All I ever see in "the wild" are filthy copies of Mario or some Sega EA sports title.

  9. Last for today. Just a few screens plotted out near the beginning. Just because someone asked... the background IS NOT purple. That is there to help me judge screen length and height as I go. :) The screens will be filled in with the background tiles when completed.

And no... "you" don't kill anything with the axe. :)

    SCREENS

  10. I'll post updates to my game map/design when I have a chance or make progress. I took an extra day of spring break so I prodded ahead today. If you look at my map, you'll see I added the screens for the "boat stage." Think Moon Patrol in a boat. It's about left and right movement with a jump to keep you from hitting bad fishies, stalactites, bats, and the river dragon! The risk vs. reward element is there as you decide if the time extensions and treasure the bats are carrying are worth it!

You'll notice I haven't said how you get to this point. You can beat the game without doing this, but I wouldn't. :) I'll just say the zombies are hungry.

When the design is finished and my partner takes over, I'll turn my attention to turning this finished design into a Zelda style map... with omissions and blacked out tiles of course!

Do I know how the whole thing works? Yep. you can see a page of my map rough with my notes that I was scribbling on today. You can try zooming in for spoilers.

Back to work (teaching) tomorrow! I'll try and accomplish at least a couple of screens every weekend though. I have to be careful that each screen leads to where I mean for it to. Except for a few special sprites for Kent, my graphical assets are done. Level design is the fun part for me after sprite work.

  11. Thank you Mayhem! I'll take that as a high compliment! I'll share my deisgn with parts blacked out when I finish sometime in June. The plan is for a hub area with five branches; one leads to the end, but all are advised for the best ending and treasure. Like Mega Man, there is a best order to proceed. You can backtrack some, but clocks won't respawn! tick tock tick tock! :)

  12. Thanks guys. You have to constantly collect clocks to keep the timer full so the alarm in the status area doesn't go off and wake the dragon. The princess will get bored if the timer gets too low and her love meter will drop. You can raise her love meter by adding time and treasure. The higher it is, the better your ending and it will determine access to certain areas of the game! The princess isn't the only lady with eyes for our hero though! There are plenty of NPCs already designed you will need to help or avoid to progress.

I'm hoping to get more level designs to my programmer this summer. My focus on design is fun and funny; not frustrating. I want a casual skill level to be able to finish, but better endings for those who practice, search for secrets, and play with finesse. IMHO the best games aren't the hardest, but the ones you replay to beat better than last time. I'm thinking Duck Tales and Contra. Most of us can beat those, but we go back because they're fun.
