  1. Just watch the SpaceX Inspiration4 launch tonight - the grin on Hayley Arcenaux's face during ascent was priceless. I am so excited to see non-government, non-professional astronauts getting a chance to fly, and doing it to raise money for a fantastic good cause.

  2. Just played the original QUAKE for the first time in close to ... what? 25 years? Man, this was *such* a great game!

It's such a blast to go back after years of not playing and be reminded of LAN parties playing deathwatch and the original Team Fortress!

  3. This Sinclair ZX81 restore/upgrade project has been a fun one.

  4. I love the fact that Zilog still makes pin-compatible Z80 processors.

I love it, too!  The Z80 is a great microprocessor, especially for educational applications: assembly language programming, computer architecture, electronics, etc.  Without all the complexity of modern computers, classic computers can still be wonderful learning tools.

    4. simbalion

      simbalion

Probably a pipe dream, but if they actually built a solid, programmable educational computer around the Z80 with some good games, I'd definitely check it out.

  5. Composite modded the little Sinclair ZX81 I'm restoring and upgrading. Silly, utterly pointless, but very satisfying.

  6. Who just sent a text intended for a friend to a work-related email distribution of about 20 people instead by accident? #ThisGuy

At least it wasn't anything embarrassing. Ugh.

No. Just embarrassing that I let it happen. Too tired lately and trying to do too many things at once.

Yeah, I went to Ebert's and Gerbert's after each shot for Mac and Cheese and Wild Rice soup. At a week after second shot now. A week to full potency.

A couple of weeks away for me...I wish Dunkin would give me a free Donut!  Also I wish we had a Dunkin.  (sigh)....We don't have a krispy kreme either, though they carry them at Mini Mart (errr now it's called Loaf & Jug,  dumbest convenience store name ever!)... But not even a chocolate?   Bah!

    4. Swami

      Swami

@GoldLeader I had a convenience store called the A&T Shop down the street (if you don't get it, try reversing the letters). Then the T left and it became Adam's Shop. HAHA.

  8. First one down, second in 3 weeks. Counting down to tacos and margaritas on the patio at my favorite local place in 5 weeks!

Same here - I may have to walk home from the local Mexican joint - I'm downing a pitcher of Margaritas to myself.  It will almost be 18 months since I went inside the place.

Our local place is 1/4 mile from our driveway, with one neighborhood stop sign and one traffic light on the way. I could stumble home but since my wife doesn't drink anymore, she'll be the DD instead, lol. :)

I never got a shipping notification either. The link is there. It's their crappy website. On my laptop it just shows as "ordered" but when I logged in with my cellphone I could see the email link and I was able to download my copy.

    3. thanatos

@john_q_atari you are right, I just logged in and could get the download link.  Thanks!

  10. Holy crap, haven't seen so much whinging on AtariAge in forever. That Circus Convoy thread is a piece of work.

Don't worry though...Crinkled box or not...Like, man,  their website busted my brain so much I was no longer thinking when it came to "select shipping" OK?  I forgot to even process it in my head,,,Pretty sure I selected Creased box, padded envelope if you're lucky, and to have a guy named Roy who works in the back go ahead and sit on it before putting it in there...   But the day will come I hold it high, crack open a beer and get down to business with a smile on my mush cuz I got it!

    3. Swami

@GoldLeader I never got the e-mail, even though I registered on Friday. Not in inbox or spam. I guess that would have helped with the confusion, such as clearing the cache, which has never solved any problem where its been suggested in the past. Most of my "whinging" was trying to figure out what was going on in real time, so I could actually get to the store. I'll live, it was just 30 minutes of frustration.

    4. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

Despite what my status post may sound like, I really do get @Swami's frustration. And I do fully understand the value of a good venting. I'm sorry you had a rough time with their site - and yes, it could use some good usability improvements in a couple areas. I hope they get that corrected for future issues.

As for cache clearing, believe it or not this was actually relevant to me professionally as recently as Friday. My work in recent years is exclusively performed via very specialized web-apps running inside a secure browser session. In the middle of my workday on Friday, I suddenly started getting site errors and corrupted data out of nowhere. And bear in mind, the browser in question isn't even local! It runs on a virtual Windows 10 machine running on a server farm somewhere inside a distant data center that I access via a secure remote connection. On a lark and so I could truthfully tell the Help Desk I had already tried before I submitted the ticket, I cleared my browser cache and restarted the stupid thing. Sure as shit, for the first time in my life that procedure actually worked.

So tl;dr: It's not often, but sometimes it really does help.

  11. Second shingles vaccination yesterday morning kicked my ass overnight. Fever, chills, shivering bad enough to pull muscles in my back and knee. JFC, getting older suuuuuucks.

Ouch..  Although, as someone who had shingles years ago...  I'd still call that worth it.  Never want to have that again.  Good luck!

Yep. I had shingles last year and then got vaccinated. I had a few symptoms after the 2nd vaccination, as well. Hope you feel better soon.

I've only bought the game twice, the original and then special edition.  (both PC)  But buying special wasn't a new purchase, because the Steam add-ons made it cheaper.

But I have like 3 or 4 copies of the game guides, original, add-ons, hardcover, etc.  I don't know why.  They are all nice large tomes!

OK So truthfully here,  I just checked "the Pile" and it wasn't there...Turns out however, I did not check Pile 2!!  And there it is!!  Yeah I have it for PS3 (Legendary Edition), but I've ummm  never played it.  Is it good for PS3?  I mean I figure I will get to it eventually.  😃

I bought the base the base game on release for the XBox 360, then again (Special Edition) 5-6 years later for the Xbox One. Steam has the whole thing on sale for $15.99 so I just bought it for PC. FUS RO DAH, my dudes ...

We got limited cellular data back Saturday evening but no cell voice or home (fiber optic) internet. Internet returned Sunday around 12:40 pm. So we had no connectivity at all for about 32 hours, and no home internet for 49 hours. Could’ve been much worse but with all the 5G conspiracy theory nut jobs out there, what happened in Nashville will happen again somewhere else. *sigh*

  14. The TacoBox crowd is crowing - congrats. After 2-1/2 years and $2M of other peoples’ money, “Atari” has produced the equivalent Raspberry Pi 4 in a custom case.

Oh, I don't know about that.  The RasPi has plenty of software, usefulness, value for money, and competent people behind it. 😜

Can you pick out your own flight attendants?  They should have virtual passenger flights where you can ride on an actual plane being flown by another user, and you can interact with the other passengers (also real world people). Get wasted on tiny $5 bottles of whiskey, start a ruckus. :)

I've noticed it's usually about computers...I think anyway...I don't know, I prolly need Keatah to translate...Or maybe it's one of Bluejay's 15 Status Updates of the day...Or involves plugging something into something else, something new into something old more than likely, or it's for XBONXXONEXXX or some other obscure modern system...Or maybe it's got that McWill upgrade so you can plug it into your Wheaties box before the Mayan crop circles spell out the word Dimwit on your front lawn signalling the end of times...Or just some bonehead complaining about GameStop (again)...

  19. MS Flight Simulator 2020 is a stunningly beautiful game. Sim. Whatever.

But it's a *really* pretty bow. The first version of MSFS I've bought since 2002, I think, so the upgrades since then are impressive to a newb like me. :)

hey, even if that is true, it's pretty wild seeing a flight simulator get this level of interest outside of the existing flight simulator niche.

I watched someone play it, and it looks great when you're in the skies, but it looks like a really late PS3 game when you're near the ground.

  20. Sublogic Flight Simulator II, 1984- one 90KB disk for base game. MS Flight Simulator 2020 - 154GB download for base game. *sigh*

I think the last version of MS Flight Simulator I bought before this was in the early-mid 00’s. 2002? 2006? I don’t remember. My kids were busy growing up and I didn’t spend nearly as much time with it as I wanted. But I’d been flying sims casually for decades up until then. And since then, I’ve flown lots of aircraft in Kerbal Space Program, plus combat flight and space simulation in many other games. Speaking of which, Star Wars: Squadrons will be a lot of fun this fall. :)

  21. Bought a WDC “Mensch Microcomupter” SBC a couple weeks ago & having a blast writing ML right into the Monitor to blink LEDS ... It’s the simple things sometimes.

  22. Banging machine language opcodes directly to registers on a little WDC Mensch SBC is remarkaby satisfying. Who needs code when you can write directly to the chip via a serial terminal? :)

      DrVenkman

Yeah, I don't know. I started a thread in the ST forum about this a couple days ago asking if anyone had pics or a service manual but no dice. Another forum member said the same had happened to the knobs on the one he had gotten a few years ago. I wonder if there was dielectric grease inside the pots that dried out over time? And given the very, very small surface area to move them when they're installed, it might just be that there's not enough leverage to get any torque. The pots also all have a center-detent position, which is where all three appeared to have gotten stuck.

How funny, I discharged a CRT for the first time fairly recently as well. Extremely underwhelming, not even a snap. I'm pretty sure the tube discharged itself after I unplugged it, I jabbed my discharge tool right on the anode clip several times and got nothing.
