I've noticed it's usually about computers...I think anyway...I don't know, I prolly need Keatah to translate...Or maybe it's one of Bluejay's 15 Status Updates of the day...Or involves plugging something into something else, something new into something old more than likely, or it's for XBONXXONEXXX or some other obscure modern system...Or maybe it's got that McWill upgrade so you can plug it into your Wheaties box before the Mayan crop circles spell out the word Dimwit on your front lawn signalling the end of times...Or just some bonehead complaining about GameStop (again)...

  2. MS Flight Simulator 2020 is a stunningly beautiful game. Sim. Whatever.

But it's a *really* pretty bow. The first version of MSFS I've bought since 2002, I think, so the upgrades since then are impressive to a newb like me. :)

      @Ryan Witmer

hey, even if that is true, it's pretty wild seeing a flight simulator get this level of interest outside of the existing flight simulator niche.

      Magmavision2000

I watched someone play it, and it looks great when you're in the skies, but it looks like a really late PS3 game when you're near the ground.

  3. Sublogic Flight Simulator II, 1984- one 90KB disk for base game. MS Flight Simulator 2020 - 154GB download for base game. *sigh*

Tonight I took off from my local municipal airport and flew over my own house ... this is more than a game for sure.

It nice to see people taking an interested in this genre, finally, after 40 years! Gosh did it take that long!?!?!?

I think the last version of MS Flight Simulator I bought before this was in the early-mid 00’s. 2002? 2006? I don’t remember. My kids were busy growing up and I didn’t spend nearly as much time with it as I wanted. But I’d been flying sims casually for decades up until then. And since then, I’ve flown lots of aircraft in Kerbal Space Program, plus combat flight and space simulation in many other games. Speaking of which, Star Wars: Squadrons will be a lot of fun this fall. :)

  4. Bought a WDC “Mensch Microcomupter” SBC a couple weeks ago & having a blast writing ML right into the Monitor to blink LEDS ... It’s the simple things sometimes.

  5. Banging machine language opcodes directly to registers on a little WDC Mensch SBC is remarkaby satisfying. Who needs code when you can write directly to the chip via a serial terminal? :)

  6. Wondering how long until Al or another moderator puts a stop to people posting one status after another all morning ...

The old version of the forum had a feature where any new status update of yours, replaced your previous one. At least among those displayed on the starting page.

Thanks, I took care of it.  He was restricted from posting in a single thread, and if recent history is any indication, that's apparently a grave enough insult for him to hold a lifelong, white-hot grudge.  Let us know if he keeps it up.

  7. Wife’s coworker seriously ill with COVID-19. Took a week after testing, but my wife’s ‘rona test came back negative. Whew.

      Thank God it was negative!

I had a Rapid Test come back Negative too!  I'm still awaiting State Test results just to be sure.

Congrats on that repair!  I wonder why the pots froze solid like that?  Looking forward to your power up test seeing some VBXE goodness on another CRT!

      DrVenkman

Yeah, I don't know. I started a thread in the ST forum about this a couple days ago asking if anyone had pics or a service manual but no dice. Another forum member said the same had happened to the knobs on the one he had gotten a few years ago. I wonder if there was dielectric grease inside the pots that dried out over time? And given the very, very small surface area to move them when they're installed, it might just be that there's not enough leverage to get any torque. The pots also all have a center-detent position, which is where all three appeared to have gotten stuck.

How funny, I discharged a CRT for the first time fairly recently as well. Extremely underwhelming, not even a snap. I'm pretty sure the tube discharged itself after I unplugged it, I jabbed my discharge tool right on the anode clip several times and got nothing.

  9. Ordered some EPROMS from China a month ago. Tracking shows arrival to my local PO on Saturday. Still not out for delivery. Grrr.....

I have no idea. It's annoying as hell. I've already waited a month for these chips. Another couple days around germy American postal workers won't help.

I have some aloe gel from Brooklyn, NY that has went into limbo since it reached the  post office on june 24. Just sent a investigation request today. They said they would respond within 24 hours. They just responded to say they will investigate.

  10. Just discovered the STRANGER SYNTHS channel on Youtube - a mother load of darkwave to wile away the late-night hours ...

  11. After fooling around with it a couple years ago, I finally broke down & sub'd to Roland Cloud - holy shit, the VSTs are INCREDIBLE. Synth-heaven ...

Interesting...I have a Roland XP-50 myself (Workstation, not vintage synth,  but I thought I'd mention it :)

    4. DragonGrafx-16

      DragonGrafx-16

@GoldLeader The XP-50 is a synth in it's own right... it's pretty much a keyboard version of the JV-1080. My JV-2080 can do really good synths. Sure the oscillators are samples but it has a full synth engine... filers, envelopes, LFOs... etc... you can even create PWM sounds using two saw waves + one of the structures modes.

  12. Somehow only just today realized that CYBERPUNK 2077 is delayed until September. Damn it - I was looking forward to something good next month. *sigh*

      Stephen

It's bad when there's a date in the title.  I mean Duke Nukem Forever was delayed FOREVER.  Hopefully this will be out before 2077 because there's no damn way I'll be around at 102 :)

I'm good with it. Got too much going on anyways. As long as it's out before October. I'll be happy!!

  13. Hair clippers arrived today from Amazon. My wife gave me my first haircut since at least February sometime. Holy shit, I had a lot of hair.

I'm just going for the ultra shaggy look until I can get back to my barber.  Thankfully I got my hair cut right before all this hit and a bit shorter than usual.  My wife keeps threatening to cut it anyway though...

    4. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

I normally keep my hair pretty short and it was a bit overdue for a cut before we went into isolation. My best guess is it had been 13 - 14 weeks since my last cut. These clippers are pretty great, btw. My wife bought these based on reviews vs. price vs. availability and I gotta say, they had zero trouble with my mop:

  14. My bro-in-law's tabletop group met via Zoom tonight to play a game of the DUNE strategy game. Holy hell, what a convoluted, bonkers game! Messy but still really fun. We have too many people in the group for everyone to play, so a couple of us got to drink and kibbitz the players. Great way to have fun under less than ideal circumstances.

  16. Playing with astable 555 clock circuits today - fun stuff! (photo attached).

  17. This is silly but it was a fun build and a lot fun to play with. Yes, it’s a transistor-scale 555 chip replica.  :)

  18. Spent some time today taking scope traces of a 7800 today. These will help if/when I ever need to repair one.

  19. Got a UAV installed into my 2-port 5200 today. Kind of a PITA but it's done and it works.

Never had a 5200....Is that an A/V out mod?

    2. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

The UAV is a video mod board that replaces the stock video output circuitry and creates an excellent composite video signal, as well as separate chroma/luma signals if you want to use S-video. It was created several years ago by @Bryan but is now produced and sold under license by @MacRorie. I have them in a 2600, a 7800, and a bunch of A8 computers already.

  20. I've now built 41 of @smbaker's 5200 analog thumbstick controllers. That's gotta be some kind of record, right?

  21. Four more 5200 analog thumbstick controllers built this weekend. That's 19 in the last 8 days. Gotta catch up with that backlog!
