  1. If anyone's ever traveling through or near Murfreesboro, TN check out the FLASHBACK ARCADE. Wonderful collection of cabs in generally great condition, and great old school arcade decor & vibe.

So where quality is concerned, it's the opposite of Flashback game systems.

  2. Parts arriving tomorrow to build an Arduino-powered SDrive-MAX for my A8 machines. Should be fun!

      DrVenkman

But that's it. The touchscreen just plugs straight down into the female headers on the Arduino board. Connect to your computer and run a batch script to program the Arduino with the SDrive-MAX firmware and that's it.

      80s_Atari_Guy

Wow, that sounds fairly easy. I do have a temperamental 1010 SIO cable, so I just need to meter which end it is and use that.

Did you use the Elegoo UNO touch screen ? These are the only ones I can find in the UK that work with the Arduino.

    4. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

Yes, I bought the suggested Elegoo touchscreen/microSD card module from Amazon (US) for $15.84. I plugs right down into the Arduino & once you update the Arduino firmware (automated by the script provided), when you boot the system the first time, you use the include stylus to calibrate the screen & you're basically done with that part.

  3. Just bought my first Arduino Uno starter kit. Looking forward to this rabbit hole.

@nanochess - that Star Trek x-ray scanner is great! Did your Nano come with an SD card slot to hold the image files? I didn't see mention of the actual card interface anywhere in the writeup. Once I get the hang of this thing, I intend to experiment with a 5200 digital joystick adapter for maze-games and such. Eventually I'll build a custom enclosure with a project box and place to mount the keypad on top.

      nanochess

I used the SD card slot in the LCD display to contain the images.

What a great time to be alive and into tech! My brother was lucky - he got to watch this on base, behind the VAB.

  5. Finished my basic 1088XEL build tonight - man, this has been a blast! May have to build the second one later this year.

  6. Started my 1088XEL build tonight. Man, it feels good to melt solder again!

  7. Great weekend on-tap: Stranger Things 2 on Netflix, Wolfenstein II downloading on the game system, and cold beer in the fridge!

      I would have something similar...

Probably "The Simpsons" I recorded the night before on VHS,

a Phanatsy Star 2 save ready,

And a bottle (or 3) of cream soda.

  8. There's not much in this hobby more satisfying that using a machine you rescued from the parts pile and repaired/restored yourself.

Also, don't solder with a 15 watt iron. It'll melt your skin just fine, but solder? Heh, nope.

    4. jaybird3rd

      jaybird3rd

I've used 15-watt irons with 60/40 solder just fine, but with lead-free solder, you'll want something a little hotter.

  10. So how long does something take to get here (Tennessee) from Poland? It's been awhile since I've ordered anything and I'm impatient/bored. :P

  11. Gah, I find myself pining for old DOS games lately. I guess "retro" really does mean, "25 years before now." *sigh*

I find that "wanting" is more fun than "having" in many cases ... low resolution graphics puts a hurt on my brain. But some of those game designs are so completely classic!

You can run skifree on 32-bit windows, and there is a 32-bit version that works with win64.

I always just used a hole punch.

    4. DrVenkman

      DrVenkman

I used to as well. But the only hole punch here in the house is a solid-core punch. It won’t cut through the tough plastic sleeve of a floppy disk. As a kid, we had one that actually had a hollow punch - the edges served as cutters and could easily notch a disk.

  13. "Out for delivery." Should be a good day! Of course, last week's "Delivered" has never actually arrived. Thanks, USPS.

      DrVenkman

Yeah, usually the case here. 16 years in the same house, no issues ‘til recently. USPS says they traced last one to the incorrect address the carrier left it at, but so far the deliveree hasn’t coughed it up. Not sure what a $15 item is worth in terms of time/effort to get back. *shrug*

Our post office is good, too. It might be worth popping in and speaking to a supervisor if this is a recurring issue.

  16. Met up with a good high school pal today for beers and he gave me a C1802 monitor. It pays to nurture friendships.

Hahahaha! Yes, I know Flojomojo. And Neil Gaiman is right - GRRM is not my bitch. I still don't think he'll live to finish the store. I hope I'm wrong. I got up at 2:00 am on July 12, 2011 to download DANCE on my Kindle and read for almost 20 hours straight. Hope I can do the same for WINDS someday but I really doubt I'll be able to do it for A DREAM OF SPRING.
