  1. BTW, there are several tools for writing adventures on older machines. What machine(s) did you have in mind.

The only one I really had in mind was the C64, purely for nostalgic reasons. But I'm open to suggestions on other platforms if enough people wanted that over the C64.

EDIT: I've also had the Atari XE in the back of my mind.

  2. A while ago I started writing out a text adventure (interactive fiction) reminiscent of the old Zork, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and such. I've done this entirely on paper.

Lots and lots of sheets of paper. It's quite the epic.

Anyway, it's almost time for me to program it onto a platform. I don't have too much programming experience, just a little bit of C about 8 years ago. Anyway, I'm trying to decide on what classic home computer I'd like to release it for. I'd like it to be something popular, that can handle large text games. I am very partial to the Commodore 64, as I had one growing up.

Any suggestions on the coding, and what system you would like to see a homebrew text adventure with a good physical release?

I should note that this is a project that I am really going to take my time with, and you shouldn't be expecting anything within the next couple of months.

  3. Is there any other place to order the limited edition from? I had major problems ordering the Rush Rush Rally Racing limited edition from Red Spot Games in Germany. It tooks months to get straightened out.

I don't know of any, but I assume that if there was they would be getting it from Red Spot Games anyway. So either way, you would be paying for something from Red Spot Games.

  4. There's something about Text Adventure games that have always captured my imagination. I recently went through all my old C64 disks trying to find the name of one I used to play a lot, but couldn't find it. I have a large amount of pirated C64 disks and a lot of them have multiple games on them, without labelling the lot.

I wrote one last year on a program designed to make modern text adventures on my mac. I can't remember what the program was called, but it was very easy to use since no programming skill was required. I'd love to learn a little bit of coding so that I could do a homebrew text adventure for the C64.

  5. I think you paid a fair price for it. It doesn't seem as rare as it used to be. I think the consensus was that because there was the recall, there weren't many left. But since the rise of the internet and the behemoth that eBay has become, there's a lot more than what people thought. There's been 9 listings on eBay over the last month. One CIB in a group lot of boxed Tengen NES games.

  6. Just got an email from Red Spot Games saying that Sturmwind has been delayed.

Here's a copy of the text from the email in english:

Sadly the production of Sturmwind has seen some complications. We a very sorry we have to bring you this news. Nevertheless we would like to thank everyone who is interested in Sturmwind for their continuous faith in this ambitious Indie project. You keep this project going. Diese Meldung ist auch in Deutsch verfügbar (siehe unten). (English) Production complications: Sturmwind is about to be delayed In spite of best planing, the release of Sturmwind has to be postponed: Our long-term CD-ROM manufacturer surprisingly had to declare bankruptcy after 19 years in business. From 40 employees only a few remained. Therefore this resulted in the situation that the scheduled delivery date for Sturmwind could not be met in the end. The only possibility has been to relocate the production - to avoid further delays of the bankrupt facility. Nevertheless items like the spaceship models have been completely manufactured already. Our new partner is one of the largest videogame CD / DVD press plants in Europe with over 50 years of experience in medium production. In the meanwhile we already placed our production order for Sturmwind. The release date is set to TBA ("to be announced") consequently. Details are currently clarified between redspotgames, Duranik and the new facility. Also we are arranging material for another announcement with more exact information within December, which will be after Christmas however. All orders in the redspotgames online shop will remain valid.

  7. Well, i've played up to where I have to save the girl (who I've called Amber for her red hair) from 2 wolf-like people. I am now level 6, 98 hit points, and getting my butt beat. I've pretty much gotten used to the attack system, where you should wait until 100% before striking. But these 2 guys are so fast, and if you get knocked down even once, they lay into you while you're down, and you never get up again.

I hate to say, but it sounds like you've taken what I call the harder route of the game. Early on you do something to effect whether you get the girl or the sprite first in your party. I always found it MUCH easier to get the sprite first, and then get the girl as it makes battling the werewolves so much easier.

EDIT: From memory that "something" is talking to the soldiers at the Water Palace or Temple, and getting attacked by goblins. If you did this you will be getting the girl first I think. If you don't do this, you get the sprite first. It's been a while, but I'm sure that's right.

  8. I'm looking for something to store my Game Boy game boxes in. I've got a few mint condition boxes and I'd like to keep them that way.

I've seen what I'm after when stores would sell GB games brand new. They were like a sealed plastic casing, and it would allow the stores to put the pricing stickers on the item without wrecking the box.

Anyone got any ideas, or other solutions?

EDIT: Just found what I am looking for at videogameboxprotectors.com

  9. I imported this lot used from HK, does it look anything like them:

I think the Digimon is probably legit, and that's about it.

Not any of them. In a couple of days I'll upload a pic. I can't at the moment because I've gone over my internet usage so it's slowed right down.

  10. Some backstory.

I never played SotN when it was released because I HEARD that it takes place straight after Rondo of Blood, and there's all these story elements to do with Rondo and you won;t understand anything blah, blah, blah.

Later on I found this wasn't quite true, but never really sought out the opportunity to play the game.

So I finished Rondo the other day (was a great game then, is a great game now) and decided to pop in my copy of SotN that I've had sitting around for a few years now.

    Disappointed.

I don't know what it is. Maybe it's the decade of hype that I've been hearing about the game. I gave it 3 hours, and I'm just not that into it. Maybe it's the difficulty. Of those 3 hours I didn't die once!

Anyway, utterly disappointed, maybe I'll just shelve it for a VERY rainy day.

  11. Just picked up a pirate Game Boy cart in the wild today. It's pretty cool. It's a 32 in 1, but really it's the same few games repeated.

Not sure if it's called Color GB 32 In 1, or Game USA Color Advance.

It's a grey cart, with "GAME" written on it as opposed to "Game Boy", and no markings of Nintendo.

It's got Super Mario World 7 (hack), Amazing Spider-Man 3, Castelian, Flipull, Bomb Jack, and Dr. Mario.

Super Mario World 7 is a hack of one of the Adventure Island games. It's odd because I normally dislike the early Adventure Island / Wonderboy games, but I like this one.

Anyone come across this cart before?

  12. Now Sword of Mana on the GBA is amazing!

Are you aware that it's a remake of a GB game? I like them both.

And Secret of Mana is flippin' awesome! Easily in my top 3 SNES games (Secret of Mana, Super Mario World, and Super Metroid) and I love everything about it. Sure the game was cut short after being initially for the CD system Nintendo was developing with Sony (the Playstation) but I'm not sure if the things cut would've even made it a better game. It probably would've made it a longer game, but I think the overall length of how it is it great. I enjoy playing it with friends. I plan on giving it a runthrough in a few months with a couple of new housemates that I'll be getting.

  13. My memory is quite recent, maybe 6 months ago.

My niece (7yrs old) has the attention span of a goldfish. She can't sit for anymore than a few minutes either watching a movie, and playing a game she normally doesn't even last that (seems to be the iPod Touch generation).

Anyway, she was visiting my house and she wanted to play a videogame. My NES was set up so I just popped in Legend of Zelda, knowing that she'd last a minute before she got bored and I'd continue playing. So it starts up and I begin a new game for her. She finds herself standing in the screen with 3 exits, and a cave entrance. She asks me "Where do I go?" to which I reply "Wherever you want.".

This look came on her face, a mesmerised look. She entered the cave and got the sword. She was so excited, like she really achieved something. She exited the cave and just went exploring. She even found the first dungeon. For twenty minutes she sat there in front of the TV, focused on the game. She had to stop cause she had to go home. As she was walking out the door she turned to me and said "Is that what real adventures are like?" and I replied "Yeah, they are."

  14. Ever bought Pokemon game that you thought was legit, until you played it and your save files would corrupt, it wouldn't quite work right, and something seemed a bit off? Then you realised you'd been ripped off with a crappy hack from Hong Kong? Well if you didn't throw it in the bin, burn it, smash it, dip it in acid; I'm wanting them. Particularly the Game Boy hacks such as Pokemon Cyber, Pokemon Chaos Black, Pokemon Quartz, Pokemon Naranja, Pokemon Perla, etc, etc.

    The weirder the better!

Send me a PM if you've got anything that might interest me.

  15.

For me, they took away things that I thought were precise and intuitive, and replace them with things that were difficult -- like the difference between the tail and the cape. I know that you can learn the cape pretty easily, but I never felt like I had to "learn" the tail. It just worked.

I notice this is a common thought amongst people when discussing this topic, but I feel the comparison is wrong and unfair, as another powerup exists in SMW which I find makes this comment void. Blue Yoshi. He takes everything learnt from the tail, and makes it better. It feels more fluid.

Now yes, your comment is opinion, and it's your opinion. I just feel that a lot of the time the powerups of the Yoshi's get left out.
