  1. Interesting. But can it also run PAL carts? I'd probably buy it if it can run both PAL and NTSC.

As much as I love consoles, handheld gaming is so much more convenient. I don't have the room to have all my consoles set up, so if I wanna play something I've gotta set the console up, which is a pain in the ass if one minute I'm in the mood for some Mega Drive, then I'm wanting some SNES, and then some SMS. Having handheld versions makes my life easy, as long as the quality is up to scratch.

  2. It's also my favorite game of all time: Phantasy Star Online.

It's just endlessly playable - the random levels, the graphics and music, the variety of weapons and items, the mags. It has everything, but despite all that stuff, if you strip it down to the very basic mechanic of hitting enemies with the three-hit, timing-based attacks - that's fun and that's why I love it.

I still find myself playing PSO, even though I can't be bothered connecting my DC to the servers that are still up. You can spend hours and hours playing it and not feel like you're wasting time. Hell, why buy Skyrim with I've got PSO ;)

  3. I own both and use them frequently because playing a handheld is so much easier than setting up a console with cables and what not.

I do prefer the Game Gear, I play it a lot more, and has more titles that I really enjoy.

Whereas the Lynx gets less play time, there's fewer titles that I enjoy. That said, there's fewer titles on the Lynx, full stop. It's very achievable to obtain a complete Lynx collection, even sealed in box.

They both have terrible battery life, but have a good supply of rechargeable batteries, 12 dedicated to the Lynx, and 12 dedicated to the Game Gear. Sounds crazy, but as I said, I play them a lot and don't want to be tied down by an A/C adaptor.

  4. You need to work on your search-fu. There's a mess of them on ebay right now.

    I'm a douche and hadn't clicked international.

LOL... I didn't even notice you are in Australia, I'm the douche LOL... well, if you're looking at local-only, I can't help you there. I imagine they'd be harder to find there than in the US.

I would prefer to buy a PAL system, there's one in Germany at the moment.

  5. So I've had my eye out for a ColecoVision for a while now, but now I'm ready for a full commitment to buy one, my main reason is because there's a few homebrew games that I would like to try out and support.

The reason I haven't just gone out and gotten one is because there don't seem to be any in my local area / state. Flea markets, online noticeboards, garage sales, nothing.

So I decide to give in to eBay. But there aren't any on eBay at the moment. Not even any completed listings now that they've shorted the timeframe down on completed listings.

My main question is what kind of money am I looking at as a fair price to get a console, and what are the main problems with the system that I should be aware of?

  6. Pretty cool.

Can't say I've ever seen an assembled one for sale. If you did a real good finish on it in some kind of casing, you could make it look pretty legit.

Buy a heap, mass produce the casings with retro styling, flog them off on ebay as "genuine" 70's Pong dedicated machines.

Don't really do that, it was a joke.

I might give making one of these a whirl on a rainy day.
