MAME/Arcade High Score Club Season 6.01: Nitro Ball

84360 Actually I've never played this one before, it's pretty good if a little less noisy then the real thing. I see someone has scored 2 million on it - which makes my effort a little sad. -
MAME/Arcade High Score Club Season 6.01: Nitro Ball

Guys - I assume the way to big scores on this is in the "bonus" round. I've never scored anything in it - is there a technique. I'm not even sure what you're supposed to do, match numbers? -
If it was an unfinished game - how can the score stand? Surely the least to be expected is the score was achieved on the same version that was released and everyone else played....

MAME/Arcade High Score Club Season 6.01: Nitro Ball

Some of you guys are fantastic. I've only managed to beat the first boss once, and then died soon after. This game is easier played without the sound on - I found the sound just drives up the adrenaline. Having said that, my score didn't get any better after playing the the sound off..... 2045030 ... -
Todd makes some excellent points in that post. Earlier I said Twin Galaxies is/was a joke - and his comments support this. How half-assed to have allowed an "honor system" to stand. Lazy, worthless. If they wanted to be taken seriously, they should have known much much better. I have no idea if this guy cheated or not - it seems to me that once suspicion is cast it needs to be addressed. But that'll never happen at Twin Galaxies. Transparency is the answer - but it appears they have NDA's. Pathetic.

As soon as someone lies about something like this then all their scores become suspect. As such, I'm not sure any of them should stand. As for Twin Galaxies - what a worthless "organization". They could have done so much, but it was run by idiots with little idea of how to do things right. Personally I consider them entirely irrelevant. Also agree on emulation. I love Mame, but it's not original hardware, so when it comes to "world records" it can't be included. In fact, Mame changes so much, one version of Mame isn't the same as the next. I think the High Score competitions on this site are more interesting than any other. Where can I get a list of VCS high scores - I have a hankering to feel inadequate.

Oh, silly me! I filter out Clones since they're.... well clones. So that will account for a number of them. I think I'll follow my own advice at this point and take a look at the games and see if there's anything I'm interested in, and get those. I only got them because I could. My personal arcade favorites are very much in the era of Pac Man and Donkey Kong.....

Huh, wonder what ones I'm missing? As I noted - I've actually played all the ones I have, so I know the ones I've got are playable. Maybe that's the set I grabbed - the playable ones......... There is absolutely no reason for me to have the full Mame set. I admit to obsessively collecting them all just for the hell of it. I have a "Favorites" folder of under 300 games, and of those play perhaps 30 of them with any kind of regularity. I use MameUIFX - and it only lists 97 games as having CHD's. Maybe their list isn't complete.
-
Stella is much appreciated. Sounds like a "job" that's going to go on forever. --lol--- Still, it's a labor of love, no douibt. I use Stella regularly.

No, I'm not asking for links - this is just an observation. A recent thread on these boards led me to get an update to Mame. I got the latest version at the time (.149), but as is the way of things, .150 came out while I was in the process of grabbing everything. I did a complete refresh - got all new roms, and all the extras (icons, flyers, cabinets, PCB's, etc.) And then I did what I've not done before - I got all the CHD's. First thing is first - if you get everything out there then your Mame folder is going to get to 201Gb. That's what I have right now, and there may well be things I'm missing. The vast majority of that - some 150Gb, are the CHD's. So now I've got them, time to dig into the games! Wow, what a disappointment. Honestly? It's not really worth it. I'm playing on an i7, and while a game or two had sound issues, they all seemed playable. But the games are a little poor, imo. Of those I've played the only one that's worth it are the two Gauntlet games. There's one weird one called Cube Quest that looks okay, and of course Carnevil - but other than that, they''re nothing to get excited about. In fact, I spent a good deal of time last night playing Amidar -which has been in Mame forever. Bottom line - and my advice - don't bother trying to get all the CHD's. It took me weeks, and there's very little return. If there's a specific game you want, just get the CHD's for that. My obsessiveness drove me on, but the disc space could be better used elsewhere. Not that I'm going to delete these now I've got them, of course.

I got my VCS back in the day, on the day it released. My memory of these arcade games is slightly different from some of you. I don't ever remember my mates and I hoping or thinking that the game would mirror the arcade. Always there was the "how close can they get it". I always knew it would be different, that the arcade would be "better". We knew the technology in the arcade was better. You have to remember, arcades were big back then, they were a premium entertainment over a console. Just having the games on a TV was something of an event - before the VCS we basically had a 100 variations of Pong. So whatever the VCS offered was a marked improvement. All arcade games on the VCS were inferior to the originals.
-
I too enjoyed it. Agree on the background music. I think you could spend a little more time on each game - but it was a reasonable run through. One thing - these games were often DIFFICULT. Mastering them wasn't an option really, they just kicked your butt all over. Which toom nothing away from how much fun they were.

As far as I know, you can't connect a mouse to a VCS. I think this hack is just for emulators. -

No mouse for the VCS. That's a hacked Rom to use a mouse/trackball. -
I don't know. You aim for the sky, not the ceiling. Developers were pushing pushing pushing at the hardware. We should rejoice in that, rather than moan that a screen isn't quite right, or a game failed. There's glory in failing admirably.

You're right. Stella has the option to use a Mouse as though it's a joystick I think. Probably explains why it's not ideal. Same with Missile Command on the Atari 800. It works, you can use the trackball/mouse as a joystick, but it just doesn't feel right. But hey - you can't have it all. Given your Emulator is Java, I'd guess people might enjoy using a mouse with it. -

Gooid news! The best of the best would allow me to use a trackball (which as far as controller is concerned, is seen by my system as a mouse) with Centipede and Missile Command. -
Well, I've been playing Donkey Kong a lot - for hours - and it's got to be one of the most frustrating games going.... so damn random. But the good news is - I can confirm my 360 controller now gives zero problems. In other words, everything now works well, and I can stop bothering you with my issue. Thanks again for the emulator, and for your help in this forum.

Missile Command is a close second - but the uber number 1 has got to be Space Invaders. In fact, the reason I found this very site and got into the emulation thing was the play VCS Space Invaders. Such an amazing port given the limitations, and lots and lots of nostalgia.
