Rainbow 2.0.2 Atari 400/800XL/130XE/5200 Emulator released
Vaughan replied to chris_rainbow's topic in Emulation
Hm, on the surface this looks good. I use Altirra all the time, and alternative is always appreciated. I do have a couple issues though. At the moment I can't get it to detect my gamepad at all (works fine in Altirra and Mame). Also, my keyboard didn't work (couldn't start Donkey Kong). Any ideas? This is a Windows 2003 Server - basically an XP system. I downloaded the C++ runtimes etc. -
All-time Games Ratings and HSC Records
Vaughan replied to therealbountybob's topic in 8-bit High Score Club
Wait - just to ask the obvious...... this list is only for scores made during High Score Club rounds, right? I was hoping to beat a few of them - but I think I got the wrong end of the stick. -
Hey, that was really cool. I'm an Atari guy myself (though my collection isn't anything to shout about), but it was way cool to see your room.

Oh man, I didn't know there was a thread with all the high cores in it! Great! I can get over 100,000 okay - not too far off the record. However, I feel there is a certainly randomness to the initial (barrel) screen - it doesn't seem to run a pattern. The first barrel that comes down seems to have some logic behind it, but even that varies a little sometimes. As for the level with the Pies - I just try to get through that ASAP, forgetting even the bonuses. Later in the game it's a bitch.

Strange, I've had trouble with the POST button over the last couple of days when posting from work (yeah, I know, I should be working on something productive, but I'm in a rare lull right now). Work machine runs XO and IE8. Clicking POST gives me an "Error on page", with no other information. But if I click the MORE REPLY OPTIONS and click it on that screen, it works perfectly..... I use Firefox at home, and that has no problems.

Man, those were the days. I recall there being lines in front of the machine, with people just waiting to play a game of Space Invaders. Pubs with the game were preferred over those that didn't, etc. It truly was phenominal. We all knew Pong, of course - and had a Pong game for home TV. But the idea you could buy a unit and play DIFFERENT games on it just by changing a cartridge was something else - it seemed unbelievable at the time.

Only 25? Kids.. desiv Well, if you're falling back to being patronizing I guess it's time for me to pull out of the debate. I wouldn't trade my 25 years working with intelligent people, with however many years you apparently have working with people who struggle with Google. I'm out of here guys. I wish the console luck, but it's a waste, imo. We'll see.

Both can play games. Both can be hacked. So why go with something new? That';s a totally different issue. Clearly the person found it. Now, when you go into a store to buy a Coke, do you bother to ask questions to make sure it really was make by Coca Cola, and it's not a knock-off of some kind? That's the issue with the Chainsaw Massacre. What was more surprising is that some want to blame the buyers - encouraging people to sell pirated product.

Hey. it's all good. But if you took everybody on the planet that used their library today, you'd still have a small percentage of those successfully finding their way around. I mean, on the one hand I'm being told people who will use this console are Internet illiterate, and on the other I'm being told it's for people who like to hack. Which is it? Look, I have no vested interest in this thing failing. Good luck to them, there is always room for one more. And if people have fun with it, all the better. I'm just saying it's not for me - nor frankly anyone I know. But hey - that's my experience. We'll simply have to wait for it to come out and see what it does. As I said, if in two years I'm proven wrong, I'll certainly hold my hands up.
-
What, you mean like a PC? And who are how is going to manage this device over time? What is going to stop Developer A making a hack, and it breaks Developers B work? And how long before someone see's it's easy to hack, and a) Finds out to copy games and posts them on nefarious web sites; b) Writes a virus?

Well, I have no idea who you work with, but I've been in IT for 25 years - including working in major development houses. There will always be a number of people who struggle, but most? And then you think about who might be interested in this system. They're not going to be newbies who are alien to the Internet, imo. So who is the target market here?

Hm, I don't think it's anything like saying that. There is a world of difference between Google and an App store. For me, an App Store serves no purpose, except to limit where I can go to get software. Companies are using it to lock you in, control content, and skim profit. So seeing it suggested here is an alarm bell. I also don't believe most people are struggling to find things on the Internet. They find them just fine - Google, emails, links.... all well established, understood, and FREE. Word gets out, gamers of this console will start message boards, discuss them on boards such as this. It creates its own ecosystem. It doesn't need a locked in "Store" for that. I go back to Shareware on PC - people find it just fine if that's what they're looking for. I honestly don't like people with vested interests trying to vet things for me. I don't trust those who stand to make money from getting me to buy something. Now, those smartphones - most people don't even buy them, they get given them when they sign contracts. Hence every 18 months they get an upgrade. How cool is that? Perhaps I under-estimate the locked in experience. But if that's the differentiator, what makes you think this one will be better or more alluring than what is already out there? What makes you think it can compete with the billion dollar companies out there? Seriously? What is he talking about? Others have posted similar looking systems from the past - and honestly, I couldn't care less what it looks like. What I care more about is utility, I think the experience people want is also about mobility, familiarity, and new "cool" experiences. Something this device sorely lacks, imo.

The only service I need is the Internet. I don't need locked in "Stores", or anything else. Just give me an Internet connection, and the World Wide Web, and that's it. The only reason the stores exist is to create revenue for someone other than the people who wrote the code. I don't use Apples Appstore, I refuse to be locked in by Apple who scam 30% for doing nothing. I certainly don't think the solution to that is create another one. Shareware for the PC worked fine without portals and the like, imo. What is complex about using, say, the PS3? You turn it on, bump around the interface, load games if you want, stick in a disc etc. How is this console going to be easier? I'd love to be sold on this, but at the moment I'm simply not getting it. By moving Android games off portable devices with multiple uses and sticking it on a - well, it's a console, let's face it - does what? How is that different from an already established xBox or Wii? People do like Android games - but are they hankering to play them on consoles? I say no. I say they want to carry them around in their pockets, or on increasingly mobile devices. I see a lot of people playing Android games - every morning on a train on the way to work.....

Fake Reproduction Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween Carts on Ebay?
Vaughan replied to parpunk's topic in Auction Central
We'll agree to disagree. The fact that the guy is obviously being misleading doesn't put any onus on the buyer. The wrong is that he's not up front and honest - the fact that he might fool someone doesn't excuse his actions in any way, or make them less heinous, imo. The guys reporting him here are doing a service in letting people know what's going on - so why should they feel bothered about this poor guys feelings? Still, agree to disagree, as I say. Personally, the guy is a scumbag, no ifs, buts, or excuses. Just my view. -
A couple of things: 1. With your logic, you're basically saying all game consoles are useless because anyone can hook a PC or Smartphone up to your TV. Well, my Windows Phone 7 can't connect to a TV, and my laptop is only able to because our TV has RGB input. 2. While the Ouya runs Android, from what I've heard Android games will NOT run on the Ouya without some code-changes, and vice-versa. In other words, there can exist Ouya exclusives. 3. There is game controller support for Android devices, but not every game supports them. The Ouya comes standard with the controller, so every game will use it. 4. There's tons of indie developers (again, myself included ) that are excited for the thing. I can understand the concern, though. It has the chance to fall flat on it's face, but I think this thing has the good potential to succeed. It has several members working on it with prior experience in the video game industry, which is a nice plus. Well, I asked the pertinent questions - what is the unique selling proposition? What gap in the market are they hoping to fill? That's the key. I hardly think that extends to all consoles, since Xbox, PS3, and Wii are already established. Their value proposition is great for them. The value here is a controller. Not something that excites me, I'm afraid. If it's true they will need code changes to run on this, I see that as a negative, not a plus. So essentially, you're going to have games that are locked into the console. A new console, with no killer proposition. The only advantage it has over cell phones and tablets is - unless I have this wrong - that it will have controllers, an advantage lost by putting a USB port on a tablet.. In the mean time, for sure, the Android market on other devices will be growing exponentially. So what is the value of this box where you're locked in against that? Looking at it for me, this thing is going head to head with all other Android devices - except with controllers. Why would I choose this? As for the developers - that's great. I'm really pleased for them. But that doesn't create a market in and of itself. So it's best to wait and see, imo. Personally I think this is going nowhere - but hey, if I'm wrong three years down the road I'll certainly admit it.

As anecdotal evidence, I certainly remember Space Invaders being a game changer. I owned a 2600 at the time, and it certainly was a huge deal when it came out. It was the software everyone wanted. I also recall the Atari 400/800 - Star Raiders was the thing for that for sure. I bought an Atari 400 because I wanted Star Raiders.

Fake Reproduction Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween Carts on Ebay?
Vaughan replied to parpunk's topic in Auction Central
Well, he's an opportunist. And yeah, a jerk, imo. I mean, every cart if a "Copy", so one would have to know who "Hoser Video" is, and how they related to Wizard (or not!) He could be far more upfront about it, but it's not in his interest to do so - he's playing on the "rarity", when in fact he can make as many copies as he wants. How is that rare? It's clear he's trying to dupe people, imo. -
Original XBOX game cases suck b**ls
Vaughan replied to chrisballer's topic in Modern Console Discussion
I love used! In many ways I prefer it over pristine copies that don't seem to have been loved. Wear and tear is all part of the deal, imo. If I was primarily interested in resell value I might feel differently. A curl on a page, a crease..... Hey - this is retro gaming, part of the territory. I mean, if you're buying used..... then you get used, right? -
I only ever played this on the PC. It got quite brutal, and was even more difficult when they brought out the add-in pack of extra missions. What a great game. I still have it for the PC, but it isn't quite right on DOSBox.
-
I'm surprised this got funded too - I guess people get caught up in the moment and don't think things through. What is the point of this device? PC/Tablets can be hooked up to a TV for game playing, if needed. Can't smartphones too? What is the unique sales proposition here? What is the unique demand they are hoping to fill? Yes it looks cool. And people seem to like to collect something if there's even a whiff of exclusivity.... but I can't see this mainstreaming. And if it's an open source Android thing, then presumably the games will run on any Android device - and if that is the case, it's going to be competing with every other Android device over time. I hear the thing about independent developers, but that's a problem that isn't related to the physcial console, it's the concept of locking people into "stores" and certification programs etc. I guess I can't fathom why this is generating excitement. What is it doing that is useful? What more can I do with it?
