  1. conquer was a poor choice of words, though I did get lucky once on the L3 Elevators. Couldn't handle them on L4.
  2. I know one area the 64 was definitely better - BBSes. This is what a caller to my BBS experienced: http://spiceware.org/downloads/commodore/Net-64.wmv Besides standard BBS features and PETSCII graphics and colors, callers to my BBS that used my MusicTerm software experienced: 3 voice music - even at 300 baud speedy menus - text was locally cached animated characters - check the arrows, ? and + animated sprites - the 64-Net in the top-right corner play games online with your joystick fonts could be changed on the fly (useful for some of the joystick games) One of my best friends in high school ran an Atari based BBS, so at one point I added full support for ATASCII in MusicTerm. I could even watch the ATASCII Movies on my 64, but they were lacking compared to the C/G Movies on Commodore BBSes as the C/G Movies were in color. I have a blog entry about it if you're interested in more detail.
  3. Super Stardust HD - it's from the online store. I like Lair, especially with the update that lets you fly using the analog stick instead of tilting the whole controller.
  4. By your score you haven't made it far enough. The game goes: Level 1: Barrels, Rivets Level 2: Barrels, Elevators, Rivets Level 3: Barrels, Pie Factory, Elevators, and I assume Rivets - I keep getting killed on this Elevator level. I just found this today, scroll down to "Beat Donkey Kong" and it has a nice diagram on how to conquer the Elevator level.
  5. That's not the C=64 version I played...
  6. I covered that in my review - the extra buttons confuse the Stelladaptor and it doesn't work as you'd like. I suspect if a paddle is plugged in then it doesn't attempt to read joystick directions, and the non-standard controllers are wired in such a way that they get detected as if a paddle is plugged in.

I saw it get hacked, but didn't see those messages. Probably depended on when the browser was auto-refreshing as the site went down for me after the "Jobs is dead" "no he's not" entries. Just wish they'd offered the antiglare option on my 15" MBP. I put on this Anti-Glare film from Photodon. Works well, though is a touch too much anti-glare (it looks a little fuzzy compared to the external monitor, but much better than the mirror finish). It went on OK, though the notch for the camera was slightly off and obscured one corner of my image in iChat. I peeled the film back to trim it and some dust snuck in. Luckily it's in the border so I don't notice it.
  8. Note that Atari's in Australia are PAL and there's no stereo coming out of the PAL TIA chips. One of the audio lines was repurposed with a PAL signal. You can see the pinouts for PAL and NTSC TIA chips here.
  9. 30,600 MAME has a built in tool to take screenshots. By default it's F12. I changed it to Home since F12 triggers dashboard under OS X. TIP: I find the rivets board easier to clear from the top down.
  10. Thanks, Nathan Strum came up with the game idea and did all the graphics. The snowman is only drawn with a single sprite, the fireballs with the other. The ice blocks and platforms are both drawn with the playfield. The snowman's melt trail is drawn with 1 missile, the other missile and ball aren't used. The original design called for a carrot nose to be drawn using the other missile, but there wasn't enough CPU time to do so. I wish I could have put a level number in, I ran out of ROM space due to all the snowman and fireball graphics. There is a bonus life when you complete 32 levels - the game starts over with the temperature increased so everything melts faster.
  11. Should be possible - in Stay Frosty I draw a asymmetrical mirrored playfield using just PF1 & PF2 while drawing 2 sprites (and reusing/repositioning one of the sprites), and changing the colors of 1 sprite as well as the playfield.
  12. I bought one way back when and really like the image quality. The stereo output is why Medieval Mayhem was written for stereo sound. The mixer for the AtariVox sounds pretty cool!
  13. My issue with that commercial wasn't that she got the pony, but the way she relished the neighbor girl's response. Without that I'd have thought "lucky girl".
  14. Yeah, avoiding lawsuits is probably a good thing. 18 months to film 13 episodes? Aren't they supposed to be "2 weeks"? I suppose you could be coming up with ideas, or doing other things on the off weeks. I've seen the airbag and virtual sea adventure episodes. Also watched the PyroPack episode online - that was cool. I'll have to catch the earlier episodes when they repeat. I was wondering, has anything gone beyond prototype stage? Or is that covered in an "end of season" episode? Any word on a 2nd season, or do we have to wait another 18 months for more? And in case you hadn't seen it, I did a review of SCSIcide.
  15. In this week's episode, Virtual Sea Adventure, Joe played Missile Command on a 4-switch while he was talking about how he'd normally use a joystick for the control but couldn't because it would be used underwater. Not sure why, but they had some black tape covering the end of the cartridge so you couldn't see the name. I also liked his custom circuit board, "Joe was here" was on it where it would be covered by a chip.
  16. Saw a new one with a girl and a pony. Unlike the other 2, my response to this one was spoiled brat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHHsPpLOD50
  17. Hadn't heard of Destino, looks pretty good. Made me think of Æon Flux.
  18. I always thought MESS was appropriately named.
  19. We had a wooden console TV, around 25" I believe. I remember it would periodically stop working and we'd take the back off, pull out all the vacuum tubes and take them to the tube tester at Osco Drug to find the one(s) that stopped working.
  20. He's a regular. They were building a wearable airbag. You can watch some of the episodes online.
  21. hmm - Lone Star Light shirt and Joe Grand's TOP TEN THINGS THAT SUCK
  22. I think this is the shirt Joe was wearing, from his Kingpin site. The G is similar to the one at his Grand Idea Studio site.
