  1. Well that's some interesting news today, haha

      If talking about Atariage... indeed.

  2. Took a chance on eBay recently with an untested 1541 that has the infamous Newtronics mech. Head just needed a clean and it loads disks perfectly... I'm floored

      bent_pin

I'd say 2/5 of the broken things I buy just needs cleaning or a proper hookup. Nothing beats getting a working 2600 shipped to you for $18.

  3. Anyone win this? Was thinking of putting in a bid but I see it escalated pretty quick https://www.ebay.com/itm/295628257260

      x=usr(1536)

Had a watch on them, but when I saw the bids climbing I bailed.  Honestly a bit surprised they fetched that much - they look to be pilot run controllers, not actual prototypes.

interesting auction. I don't remember if my system x has proto controllers or not.

      Neato!

I was mostly surprised as it was the only auction on eBay of 5200 controllers that left out the word "Untested" and didn't say "For Parts/Repair"  😛

  4. Recently got a 5200 Masterplay and found that it was trivial to mod for SMS/Genesis controller support, just a matter of wiring up the extra button to button 2/C and adding 5V to the 9-pin port...

Here's a little overview of how I did it, just a couple of wires!

And for anyone curious, here's what the (unmodified) insides of a Masterplay look like...IMG_5413.thumb.jpg.5ccce4d10d6a4a3a188fd25ab2bb95f8.jpg

  5. Gonna be tackling the 2600 adapter mod on my 5200 soon and I'm working on a little PCB to help with that...

I tried this on another 5200 yesterday and I can confirm that it comfortably fits within the bottom shielding.

I've also written a procedure on the Consolemods.org wiki for the whole shebang: https://consolemods.org/wiki/Atari_5200:VCS_Cartridge_Adaptor_Modification

  6. Has anyone had any issues trying to reach Brad at Best over the phone? I've tried calling him to place a CC order and he doesn't seem to be picking up during business hours...

    1. save2600

      save2600

I've only ever sent checks or PayPal (which I understand he no longer accepts?), but are you able to leave a message on an answering machine? If not, have you tried e-mailing him with your order and phone number, asking him to call you back?

    2. ApolloBoy

      ApolloBoy

I'm gonna have to email him as I actually left a couple of voicemails over the week.

    3. ApolloBoy

      ApolloBoy

Got an email back, apparently Brad doesn't really check voicemails much because of spam calls and people confusing him with Best Buy. Looks like I'll be getting my order filled soon...

  7. Experienced my first RIFA capacitor failure with my IIGS tonight. God these things reek!

  8. Finished fixing up the smashed 810 drive I got on eBay last week and it's looking pretty damn good, all things considered. Check out the replies for before and after pics...

Here's how it looked when I received it. One entire corner on the top half was smashed and the corner on the rear left also had a huge hairline crack. Both screw bosses on the left side were also broken off from the impact and the bottom half on the right front corner also took a hit.

      ApolloBoy

And the after! I was able to reconstruct the smashed corner as best as I could with super glue, and also repaired the hairline crack to prevent the rear top half from coming apart. The case also got a good cleaning beforehand, and then after the repairs were done, I slathered the case with cream peroxide developer and placed it in my UV box for whitening. Less than a day later, the case came out an acceptable shade and I reassembled the drive.

Oh and the best part? Despite all the damage and everything this drive has been through, it still worked perfectly fine! I was able to play several games for a few hours with the drive powered on the entire time and it worked like a champ.

This motivates me to glue together my Mac 512ke's front bezel.

  9. Got a spare ColecoVision and spare SNES, all cleaned up and working great, anyone interested?

  10. Like an idiot I went and picked up an Atari 810 last night (with the MPI "garage door" mech). Anything to look out for?

  11. So um, I guess I own an Atari 400 again after like 10 years

  12. Modified my breadbin C64 with a VIC-II2 switcher so I can finally experience PAL C64 games and demos on real hardware, though I'm rather disappointed with the video quality on the PAL side of things. Wondering if the PAL VIC-II revision I got (6569r1) has something to do with it.

    1. carlsson

      carlsson

Do you go through composite or S-Video? I'm not an expert on various revisions but generally S-Video tends to look decent.

    2. ApolloBoy

      ApolloBoy

This is through S-video, the VIC-II2 has Lumafix built-in but I'm still getting some jailbars. Output on the NTSC side still looks pretty good but I'm wondering if replacing the RF box with a bypass board would help...

  13. I'm in the midst of converting a Fatal Run cart into the NTSC version and for some reason it's not booting. Any ideas?

Yes, that board doesn't need extra logic, and in theory it should work just by replacing the rom with a pin compatible eprom. Sorry for the confusion.

    4. ApolloBoy

      ApolloBoy

Hey @CPUWIZ I think I'll take you up on that offer. Really don't feel like messing with it anymore and I'd like to get it done soon. Thanks!

  14. Just scored a copy of M.U.L.E. on the C64 for a great price!

Got it for about $15 + $7 shipping, not bad considering it's been sitting at triple digits for years.

Got it in the mail today, it’s an original copy and it works fine!

  15. Well well finally got a copy of Dracula X on the PC Engine for a "decent" price

I would like to play it on original hardware someday....TG16-CD are pretty hard to come by though..I mean it was the very first CD system.

  16. I discharged a CRT for the first time today, literally one of the most underwhelming things in my life.

  17. Looking through the various subreddits I'm on, I'm still amazed that people don't know how (or don't care to) search Google for basic questions...

      Hey.

Yeah this is a thing. But don't actually tell people just to 'Google It' as a reply.

Nothing really makes me wanna punch someone after I spent basically two days trying to find an answer to a thing on Google, etc and when I ask get told 'Lol Google It Lazy F**k'. :-/. Either answer it, or move on.

  18. Added some Neo Geo things to my FS thread! Hoping to use the proceeds to get a NeoSD...

  19. Spent a good chunk of time yesterday taking pics of most of the stuff I'll be selling. Will be updating my FS thread soon with lots of goodies!

  20. I'm beginning a purge of my collection, check here if you're interested in anything: https://bit.ly/2zFqVNn

That's got to be the slickest web based spreadsheet program I've ever seen! Nice and organized, easy to read and navigate too.  :)

  21. PSA: If you have a Sega Nomad, get it recapped if you haven't done so. I worked on mine earlier today and found that every single surface mount electrolytic had leaked. Thankfully there was no board damage, but still not fun to clean up.

  22. I got back my original Sega Saturn today from my brother and I didn't realize how cobbled together VA0 Saturns are. Yellow tape everywhere holding down excessively long wire harnesses and PSU in the top case, yuck.

  23. Picked up a VA3 Genesis 2 which was sold as "non-working", turns out the power LED was burned out and the system worked perfectly fine. Score!

    1. ApolloBoy

      ApolloBoy

I also replaced the reset button (which was working intermittently) and most of the caps. Just need to order more 47 uF caps to finish the job and maybe put in a Triple Bypass board. Seeing as how I have a Japanese Mega Drive 2 in shipping limbo, I might sell this Genesis off later...

  24. Just finished doing a UAV composite mod on a 7800... while having a migraine.

I did this on my otherwise untouched 1984 7800, and I wound up doing a very simple mod with a standard 3.5" jack, outputting just video and mono audio. It really pained me to drill a hole in this particular console, but it was a very clean job and I made the entire mod as unobtrusive as possible. That's more than I can say for my LHE-modded 7800 which acted as a "guinea pig" system for years.

Very nice. I did a UAV on my daily-driver 7800 a few months back. I left my AT-84 unit untouched for now. Here it is via composite to my RetroTink 2X-Pro.

Aaaand pics of my handiwork. The soldering was a bit touch and go on a couple of points (thanks migraine!), but it all holds up and I can always touch it up later.

  25. It's really something when like half the posts on the Game Boy subreddit are people asking if their games are bootlegs
