You can't play 7800 games on the 2600 for several reasons. 1st off, the 7800 games use the 7800's chipset, and second, the 7800 carts won't fit in the cart connector in the 2600.

Atari would have had a slightly better rep if ET was better, but you're forgetting about the glut of horrible 3rd-party games for the 2600 that caused the crash in the first place.
