Overall this would have still been disapointing given all the hype and it would be just another pacman clone but it wouldn't have been called the worst game of all time by anyone. It might have even been an upgrade over the existing pacman. It would most likely be given an "ok" nod by most who owned it but wouldn't come highly recomended.

In the end this would have been better and is a safe bet. You take a movie license and make an ok game that anyone can play. Nothing great, nothing awful , nothing complicated or confusing but a safe bet on a product that will be bought up by fans of the movie not die hard gamers. Today we see this often with high dollar licenses converted to videogames. Sometimes someeone will try something different and take the risk but it isn't a rush project.

2600, didn't need another pac-man rip off. I'd take the 'sucks a**' comments (sometimes those comments are honest and many not} over playing E.T. in a pac-man maze. It would need a lot of work to make it anti-pac clone. For me, if programmers did this "more often" in the 80's. It would suck...! Imagine if Atari woulda' taken the easy route "majority of times" making clones of Pac-man when they were pressured, short of time, or lazy? Talk about a boring library of games.

In fact that was 7800's demise, recreating all the same arcade games that 2600/5200etc had already done well, and not creating enough games with original ideas. Just wasn't enough to compete with Rad Racer/Mario/Castlevania on NES, or even Personal Computers at this point.

You do realize that these reviews were written some 12+ years ago? As such, they were some of the first reviews written about classic games. Sort of uncharted territory. I would venture that Keita would have rated some of them differently today, but maybe not.

    John

I realize that easily. As I first found that site at least 8 years ago. However I first started reading 'all' of the reviews on that page recently. BEFORE I just would surf to a game or two I liked and read the review for it. I just felt that Keita, would sometimes rating a poorly made game high, and a good quality game low. I didn't agree with his sayings on why the games bad, just felt contrived to me.

    -

I don't think how old the reviews matters much in rating of games. Unless he wrote these in the 80's or something. Atari gaming still plays the same to me as it did in 1999.

  3. Todd Rogers didn't do that. I've had a bounty up on twin galaxies for many months now for

27.80 and no one has claimed it yet because it is not possible.

Yeah, I call BS as well. Only way to do 27.51 is to find an exploit. I would believe 27.91. I had room for improvement on my 27.96 run. I sent a PM to Todd via AtariAge, asking how he did it... no response so far.

If it was BS wouldn't Twin Galaxies know that, because they require a video of the persons game?

Many Todd's scores on TG... seem unobtainable.

You can't take that away from us ! For the sake of the pain of all the children in the 80's I won't stand back and have this game upgraded from junk to genius! The children who were burned so bad that Christmas! Think of the children !...the children....(sob)

Junk to genius? hmmm why is it that E.T. has to be one or the other?? Why not its "kinda cool" or average. Oh.. burned on x-mas u say?, poor little kiddies. even kids in the 80's were brats with no attention span. damn... ;) i'm exaggerating a bit, but.... the fact they had an x-mas tree and 1 gift should be enough. I'd rather add an okay/mediocre game to my atari collection, then to be starving on x-mas or in the hospital.

Just tossing that out there. YA.. i'm laying it on pretty thick. lol

  6. I hadn't played this game on real hardware in years, until just the other day. I've gotten better at it since I've had to play through so many times while working on the color and sprite hack.

I've played through it countless times in an emulator, but this is the first time I've ever played through on a real 2600.

    Here's a screenshot:

    post-9364-126169659151_thumb.jpg

It's not quite a record high score... I've gotten better on an emulator, but still pretty good for playing on real hardware without a pause, save states, or cheats. edit: Oh yeah, and a real Atari controller. :end edit. I just noticed that Bentley Bear said that Youtube video was his best score, so now I've got something to work for.

    Challenge ON!

Consider that a slap of the gauntlet. lol

Woah... Nice moves! Your new atariage name should read... '2600 Double Dragon master'. I thought I was pretty good at this game but I haven't "won" it. You did it on the real hardware too... Cool!

  7.

Not only did it play bad and look horrible. . .

It seemed like all kinds of games back then had single-color characters and a crap load of flicker, but E.T. had multicolored characters and no flicker. How horrible!

You would have a screen with 4 pits and ........nothing else.

    ok

then another screen with 4 pits.

Yeah great graphics here man. Those pits sure looks real. I have to hold on to my seat so I don't fall in. That must be why ET keeps falling in. Those pits look so real and so big... LOOK OUT !

As a kid we all got stuck in the pits. Not so much because we didn't learn the controls but because that really is all there was. Now people are saying that was the point of the game and you had to fall in the fall in the pits to get items. Well that just makes it worse ! I had held out the hope that after a maze of pits you got to the place where the real game started.

Yes the point is to get in the wells.. and collect # pieces. It's better then falling in for no reason,

or dieing after falling in.. that would be truly frustrating.

I don't get why the pits/wells... are such a bother to some, Pitfall one of the best selling Atari games

has pits/lakes/swamp... covering half the ground you have to run across, sometimes without a roap, sometimes with alligators in them! This doesn't bother anyone ever... I find that a bit ironic. Sure, it's dressed up nicer...plays out smoother then E.T.

and the vine swing is a fun touch. But again, if you fall in "ONE" pit with Pitfall, u die... and there's nothing in any of them to help you solve the game.

I'm not saying Pitfall is worse then E.T. or that it's programmed worse, no... I'm just comparing the

challenge and saying E.T.'s well obession isn't the worst frustration ever. lol At least E.T. isn't eaten by an alligator in the pits, talk about unforgiving.

There's only one screen where the wells/pits are difficult to move around.

1 screen has no Pits at all. It's not like there's 8 pits on every single screen.

You can just use game option 2 or 3 if you can't get around them..

and you can take your time. No villans.

  8.

It seemed like all kinds of games back then had single-color characters and a crap load of flicker, but E.T. had multicolored characters and no flicker. How horrible!

Did the programmer even see the movie? What does screen after screen of multiple pits have to do with ET ?

The "Pits" were designed as part of the "challenge" and a place to get the # phone pieces.

It has nothing to do with the movie. A lot of games on movies were changed some, *Alien* I don't remember any of them gathering eggs??! Oh well... it's 2600 after all. Let it go...

and with Atari 2600... I'm surprised E.T. had followed the movie as well as it did...!

Graphics were downgraded a bit (meaning the wells/pits) to fit it all in (gameplay/options/screens)...

So, with only 6 weeks to make a video game about E.T. I think the programmer did an excellent job.

I have fun with it. Keep in mind, many (not all) online are very unforgiving of this game... not one

thing about it is let slide... but I think the true 2600 fans and those who understand what

games were like in early 80's can get that it's not always gonna be flawless, especially

in a quest game. They know Atari's limitations.

  9. Everyone has different opinions...

    Sure, I understand.

But, what I was getting at was, this AGH Reviews.. well, he trying to pass his "opinion" as facts

or that he picks which games to avoid, or what to play... and I can be strict in my own opinion

and say I think he's wrong many times. I just don't think this dude is clear or completely direct.

I think he votes according to how much he likes a game, not by the real quality or gameplay, like his ratings claim to do.

  10. Picture this. You're an 8 year old kid. You got your Atari the year before, and only have a handful of games (maybe 4 or 5 at the time.) You get E.T. secondhand from someone because they hated it and sold it to your mom, since you mentioned you saw it in a store and it looked cool. It comes with no instruction manual. Now, you start it up, and do you have ANY FUCKING CLUE as to what you're doing? Fall into a pit, fall into a pit, ad infinitum. Not everybody had the damn manual you know, and I really hate it when an older game like that REQUIRED a manual to be played (I never even knew about the 2 joystick thing for Raiders till years and years later). So, you play it for an hour, realize the giant turd pile it is, and never touch it again.

In conclusion, E.T. FUCKING SUCKS. I simply cannot wait till the Angry Video Game Nerd does his video on it and tears it the new asshole it deserves.

So, AVGN IS going to do a video on E.T.?? Or is that just wishfull thinking?

I'd watch his video of E.T. and laugh... because he pokes fun at many games...

regardless if they are even bad or not. No hair off my back. He's creative enough to pull it off

without being insulting to his audience.

You hate old games that require manuals?? Hmmm even if it's not required,

you can learn a lot.. like with Fantastic Voyage or Star Voyager... I didn't know till recently with

Star Voyager you can use lazers by flipping the left difficulty switch to A!

I'd like to have your manuals. hah You really get the best gaming experience from reading them...

even if it's only a simplistic game like Stampede or Oink!.

  11. AGH'S ATARI 2600 REVIEW PAGE

Well, this webpage has a slew of Atari 2600 game reviews... and I don't agree with many of them!

They seem very random, and often all over with the number ratings. Have a look,

    http://www.atarihq.com/reviews/2600

Even gave 20th century fox a 'bad name', in terms of making bland games?!

I bet to differ! I like Fox games that were made. I love Fantastic Voyage, Porky's.. Alien

was pretty cool and hell I even like Beany Bopper... lol.

    Quote by the reviewer...',

""Believe it of not, not all games published by Fox were bad or poorly licensed games.

Sure, the vast majority of Fox's 2600 library is pretty bland, but a few games manage to stray

    from the pack.""

""Overall, it's not bad by Fox standards, but that's not anything to write home about.""

    Here's some disfunctional reviewing...

So.. Barnstorming and Bachelor Party are better then Alien and Fantastic Voyage? OK...

  12. Here's a rough top ten list, I picked games that I really like and play the most. Not by the quality of them.

    2.Reactor

    Hey more love for Reactor!

Yes sir. This is one of those games, I had a good feeling about after buying it,

I even looked at VGC website when he first reviewed Reactor, it had a rating of 'B.'

Then sometime later it fell to a disasterous F. I even emailed Dave twice asking if he could

try it again, he did! but once again he failed to give the game the credit it deserves.

ANOTHER F.. common' now, I'd say even if you find Reactor very flawed or unfun

it shouldn't go lower then C or D. 'F' to me, is for games that fail in every sense.

Like slot machine or space jockey.

  13. Here's a rough top ten list, I picked games that I really like and play the most. Not by the quality of them.

    1.E.T.

    2.Reactor

    3.Centipede

    4.Fantastic Voyage

    5.Yar's Revenge

    6.Porky's

    7.Ms.Pac-man

    8.Zaxxon

    9.Othello

    10.Krull

    11.Asteroids/Stargate/Venture etc...

Frogger probably would have made it, but I wore it out years ago. Don't play it much now.

  14.

    8. Reactor (what is going on?)

    6. Mouse Trap ( it hurts my eyes)

Reactor is a very good game. What makes you not like it?

Mouse Trap just doesn't cut it on the 2600. Many times I wanted to open/close doors and I turned into a dog instead. Once you fire it up on the ColecoVision there is just no going back to the 2600 version.

Mouse Trap may work well on the 5200, however.

Mouse Trap... eah..! I don't like that game, I keep trying and it hasn't taken off yet.

  15. sure... lets see (not countin homebrew,)

    8. reactor

I considered putting Reactor in my top 10. Great to see someone else enjoying this underrated gem.

I really like Reactor. I may even say I love Reactor.

People really should read the instructions on that one, it improves your Reactor experience and gives you a better understanding. Although I liked it even not reading the manual.

  16. nice to see so many defender fans... "defending" the original defender.

so i'm not crazy for liking this game :D

I played Defender a lot back in the '80s and it does not deserve to be mentioned in the same breath with Pac-Man and E.T. In contrast, Pac-Man was a major disappointment only seconds after hitting the reset switch.

Defender pales in comparison to Defender Arcade and Stargate, but it was not a "straight to the bargain bin" release that these reviewers would lead you to believe.

then by the year 1990-1991... i played pac-man for atari 2600 first time ever.. and I felt dissapointed... even though I knew it was different to mrs pac-man I knew it was a stinker and

should be more or better then it was. With saying that though, I think pac-man it's a fun-ish game if you give it a chance. Just get used to it, lower the standards u have.

The fact that you played Pac-Man for the first time almost 10 years after its release may be the reason for the difference in opinion.

What difference in opinion? I thought it was bad my first time playing it...

I agree with what you're saying about it. BUT for me even with dissapointment pac-man is still

a playable 'average/fair' game. I may have played it at an arcade once before trying the atari home version.

I could have played pac-man sooner then 1990. but I had bigger selection of Odyssey2... as we were an Odyssey2/Commodore 64 family.

  18. E.T. is not the worst game ever made, or even the worst game on the VCS console. Take a look at Beany Bopper or Sssnake by Data Age for some pretty lame offerings.

Awwww, c'mon! I love beany bopper!

Yeah, Beany Bopper is sweet! Get above 100K and bam! Insane.. simply insane.

As for E.T, yeah, if you ever do get really good at the game.. faster humans. Nuff said. :D

What R.T says about the game really is pretty much the undying truth about the software: he states constant fact.

3 pits only you ever have to go into. Heck, only one phone piece is on any given screen, so as long as the FBI agent doesn't take them from you and hide them again, all you have to do is go to the next pit screen, find the ? zone, get the phone piece and repeat. Escape the humans after you, find that elusive phone home zone, which should actually be your first priority, and then make the call, get to the forest, use the send humans home zone, then quickly get to that landing zone. :D

Yeah, pits/wells are easy to deal with, just memorize the location of those wells. Float/spin around them, don't even have to enter them much just... find the (?) on the screen that will flash which well has a phone piece then, go in there, and do the same again till you're done collecting phone pieces. No need in going in every pit at random, just use the (?) method.

I think this game really captured the feeling of being E.T. Also is fun to move that sucker around...

and from reading the tips you posted Kurisu I realize that this game has really captured the feeling of the movie, the "getting him home" parts. Collecting reeces candy. He even gets sick like the movie, and die... yet can't die... entirely. His heart glows red too doesn't it? when ur E.T. game is over/lost?

Would be funny if there was a variation to play as elliot... and E.T.'s miracle finger would cure ellliot from death. haha... what does elliot need to do?? get that blonde girls phone number. call her and escape together like romeo and juliet..but in E.T.s spaceship lol

  19. Just got through playing Turmoil and my opinion hasn't really changed.

VGC gave it an A. So I thought I was a lucky dude, and bought it 8/10 odd years ago. I assumed it would be like or as good as Beamrider or Tempest. Not even close.

After I played it first time, I felt it was the only time the VGC

had really overrated a game. I don't like those Fast Eddie looking graphics either "really ugly",

and the stuff you shoot??? What is it?? Doesn't seem very threatning.

Sounds in the game are 'irritating' to say the least...

Somebody make it stop! Ok bein dramatic now, but nah.. this game doesn't do it for me,

everything else is better.. except Froggo stuff. I think I prefer Laser Blast over this.

Even if I respect this game more. Just isn't fun to me.

  20. I remember being suprised the first time I saw how universally reviled E.T. is online. It was far from my favorite Atari game, but I did enjoy it and I've probably completed the game a few dozen times. Come to think of it, it's at least somewhat similar to another game people seem to dislike - Superman. That one's a little worse, but I still think it doesn't quite deserve its reputation. Once you get past the weird glitches, there's a somewhat enjoyable game in there.

I like Superman. People don't like this one either??

I thought the programmers did just fine. Not an easy game to make in 1980.

Only thing that I didn't like was the city terrain was confusing, I couldn't find

the correct area but that's what mapping is for. ;)

  21. I got E.T. back in the day for my system. I HATED IT. I hated it then, I still hate it now. If you like it, cool, but like Random Terrain is always trying to do, don't try to convert people over to your evil, evil ways. E.T. lovers eat babies and kill puppies you know! A game doesn't get the "worst ever" tag for nothing, you know. There has to be something seriously wrong with a game for it to get that designation. Now, personally, I don't think it's the worst game, and not even the worst game for the 2600. The graphics were pretty nice for it's time, and the music was passable, equal at least to anotehr H.S.W. game, Raiders of the Lost Ark. But it DOES suck, sorty to say, guys. And, if the rumor is ever truly confirmed, there is NO other game that was deemed shitty enough to simply toss into a hole and fill in with concrete.

You say that a game doesn't get "worst ever" tag for nothing??

Well this is surely an acception.

Most did not like the E.T. game, probably because

they didn't have "instructions" anymore or tossed them out without reading.

    I heard stuff like... ~E.T. looked cool,but I didn't know how to play!!~

That was what I thought too at first... I myself

often lost the manuals to my games when I was a kid and didn't read them often.

So... being Atari games and all... 90% don't require a manual read before playing.

E.T. did, and this could have been most of the issue with people,

    at least it should be...

I bet this was what the "original" dissapiontment on E.T. was REALLY about.

It wasn't cause the gameplay was so damn hedious like Double Dragon also on 2600 or

Back to the Future for the NES. THOSE are disasters... not E.T.

Now I'm not saying E.T. has to be awarded the best 2600 game... but fans

of Atari should see it for what it is. Realize how the Atari system is " far limited"

to later consoles and to rate it according to OTHER 2600 games. Not to NES/SEGA/PLAYSTATION.

I can say you can do a lot worse then E.T. especially in the 2600 game library.

Try Laser Blast by the great game designer David Crane...

anyone anyone?? Now there's some pain for ya.

LOL, well I'd rather be told a game is good and have someone tell me valid reasons why, then listen to

loads of people complain about how bad a game like e.t.. is... and have it come from a dishonest place.

Young people now, they just want to be trendy and funny with nasty sarcasm, (really taking it too far these days) and complain (pretend) to make mistakes in the e.t. game

and call it honest frustration... I even saw a video where a guy pretened to get stuck between two screens

I never got stuck moving E.T. around?? LOL, only time it happened was when one of the bad guys tried to take E.T. back

to their headquarters. The screen took an extra second or two to drag E.T. but that always fixed itself.

and doesn't effect the gameplay, score, or anything. This type of thing happened a lot with old computers and video games...

    their call BUGS.' Right?

If you don't like it thats just fine... of a video game that aren't even

With the games instructions in front of you, this does not quality as the worst game ever.

Yes, some games require a manual before playing them, that doesn't mean a game sucks cause it

can't be played without one. As for passing evil, or making people like E.T. I have no intention to

change someones mind, you can't really when people follow the crowd, or don't think for themselves.

I'm just here stating my own opinions, and I got legit ones. I do hope someone can read what I say about E.T.

and agree, or fans of the game Adventure can try E.T. (if they haven't yet) and like it for themselves.

    PS

the remaining carts where tossed in a hole, because Atari made far too many copies of the game to even be sold on the market.

they needed to get rid of them somehow, it wasn't a ritual killing of a bad or evil game ok lol.

  22. You know what game(s) seriously sucked back in the day? The Swordquest series. Yeah, talk about hype and worthless gameplay. I had both the commons and felt ripped off the second I popped them in. Comparatively, E.T. is a very playable, rewarding and gratifying game - period.

Other 2600 that totally sucked were the "real sports" series. Complete and utter garbage compared to what was out at the time across various systems.

Very well said ... I agree the Swordquest games were widely distributed like E.T. but unlike E.T. they were really difficult nearly impossible! I have to say I do like the Mini-games on them... but that doesn't do much for the Swordquest series as a whole. As for the Real Sports... I do like

Tennis and Volleyball but Football and Baseball were far below average at the time.

As for the looney tunes on youtube lol... yeah if they hate E.T. to the "degree" they do,

Atari 2600 is NOT for them, sorry... but it's the truth.

  23. Why is it that everywhere I look youtube, web pages or whatnot,

I see all kinds of posts that E..T is the worst 2600 game,..

    or worst game ever made...

I read one comment that the game made this guy wanna put a gun to his head.

ok ,first of all people.. this IS Atari 2600...

and E. T. doesn't stand out to me to be any worse then the average game for Atari's standard.

I actually like it, I don't find the "falling in wells" to be a legit argument for the game "sucking worse then anything.",

hell, at least there's something IN the wells.. and you need to go in them to win the game,

would be different if the wells were useless and just killed you when u fall in then there's something to

    REALLY complain about...

but wells are easy to deal with, just raise E. T.'s head 1/2 second after you accidentally fall in the well...

and boom ur out! who cares!!?? I don't. any gamer who has any talent at all, can move around the wells with practice.

everyone in the world...can praise Kaboom!, even if the bombs are flying so fast u can't even think or blink.

no one says, god the bombs drop so fast this is the worst game ever made... blah blah...

cause that's what kaboom is about fast as hell action, love it or leave it.

    E. T. is a game which is like no other for Atari 2600. It was ahead of it's time,

in terms of game play. The game was Nintendo and Sega like...! just in a smaller/minimal 2600 kinda way.

I guess some players would rather have E. T. collect candy in a pac-man clone maze game,

with scientists and doctors chasing him around the maze. No thanks that's what pac-man itself is for...

no need for another rip-off. right?

people just need to jump on the hate-band wagon don't they? I bet many of this Internet people

weren't even alive in 1982.. and think they have something to say about a game they might not even have played.

I don't think original Atari 2600 gamers had a problem with E. T. well, certainly not to the point of fake suicide jokes... its just, without the manual.. if you didn't read it u were lost... and end up playing missile command instead.

    lol.

I first played E. T. at my cousins house in 1988. I liked it but there was no manual ,

so I was lost didn't know what to do,

luckily 11 years later Internet had Atari sites existed and I found the instructions... and I read them

played e.t. and realized, this is a decent game! yeah its got a few flaws... but I know what im doing...

whoo hoo.. and then I won it. :)

tired of these random people who claim its the reason Atari went under, or caused the video game crash of 1983...

well, I highly doubt it... pitfall was released 2 months earlier then E. T....

and everyone loved that one, why would E. T. end the game market?? because ET was wasn't *the game of gods*

well pitfall and other great 2600 games made in '82 shoulda' helped save the game crash of '83....

Urban Champion was awful one of the early NES games, but it didn't stop Nintendo. Why would E.T. kill Atari game sales or the whole video game market of 1983?

Now I'm going to ask, the gamers that were around in the year 1982-83 that were aged 8 or older.

What do you think made the sales of video games drop dramatic in 1983?

Was it the personal computers like Commodore starting to appeal and push aside Atari, Odyssey, etc?
