1st attempt 0735:1 Day 5. (Patch) This is an interesting game for HSC because, I feel I'm contending against weather, cars, timer... and not my fellow Atari Agers' or their scores. It's also a war on stamina... I notice this game makes me kinda woozy.

I know that was with the last Winter Olympics. If Zero wants to take the responsibility from me, I have no problem with that. Hence why I waited at the last second before doing this. Zero also did the 2004 Summer Olympics as well but passed on the 2008 Summer Olympics. Of which I did. I presumed because I did the 2008 Summer Olympics that doing the Olympics had now fallen in my lap. If I stepped on Zero's toes I am extremely sorry about that. Yeah you're perfectly in right here. No need to feel ur stepping on anyone. I actaully asked Zero about if Winter Games is going for competition, but haven't gotten a reply... yet. It's been 3 days.

Cool, My mother is of Swedish background, so I'm going to join you Pjk's. I make a very good Pytt i panna dish. LOL. (wonders if I spelled it correct) I don't own Mogule Maniac either, if it's needed to play, maybe someone here can help me with an emulator for 7800, anyone?

Yars' Revenge, that poor fly trying to protect his planet, and destroy the qotile Throught the game is a menacing "hum" sound. Dreary empty atmosphere with a strange force field...and a moving wall protecting an evil piece of machinery... which changes into a swirl lunging right at poor Yars. All the while it becomes more dangerous and more angry. There's no escapes, and no backing out... just try to survive as long as possible. Bug VS Machine, it can't be bargined with, it can't be reasoned with ... it will not stop... till u are dea---bug juice. -------- Crypts of Chaos, you walk down scary looking corridors of the maze nearly pitch black, that seem endless, the deeper you go, the more menacing creatures are lurking slowly forward at you playing their scary music cues, ready to drain you of your health. Snake bites in the dark anyone?! Eeeeeek! RUN damnit! I can't, I'm lost. You can make it out, if you're lucky, but will you ever be the same again?

Othello is quite a great game, baised on the old board game. Playing it against the computer is a lot of fun, normally you can't say that against the AI. But I thought it was awesome when I first got it. My first time playing it was ON the Atari 2600.

That is definately THEE list to follow. These games are oldies but goodies. Perfect list by Ransom, no need to even help out further PS, I find that Maze Craze and Air Sea Battle kinda bite when played with only one player.

Yeah, when I am over 10k the game is gets insane! The ghosts are significantly faster than the Pac-Man. On TG the scores jump from about the 15k range to the 300k+ for these top three. Also, 91 hours? That's pushing close to 4-days straight on this. I don't even think humans can stay awake that long without dying, ignoring the fact we have to eat and then take time to expel the food when its been processed. Lol yeah, I guess he ate with his feet and used a pee bucket?? I mean pac-man simply isn't fast enough to outrun the ghosts as they get faster and faster. Highly suspicious TG scores here. Especially since you toymailman, have racked up 1st place finishes often here, and such a fine gamer as yourself couldn't get to 20,000 let alone 2,000,000.

Oh yeah, the equal sign through me off a bit... i fixed it in the tip notes. cheers.

Hmmm... the manual wrote 4th ghost = 160 points. They must have made an error.

I took a pic of the Front, back, top, and bottom. What other pics of it do you need? ... with better quality. The pics are too blurry and have too much glare for me to give a positive ID. Heck, for all I know from that pic, it's a repo with an inkjet label. I'd say it's real, because the label looks legit... with even some wear on it from age?

What is your weapon of choice for 2600 games?
JacobZu7zu7 replied to famicommander's topic in Atari 2600
Good man, I don't know what to vote exactly, because over the years I have switched off using different Atari's. My first ever was a Vader 2600 black console. Then I went to woody 4 switch, back to the Vader... and now I went to... the light sixer Atari woodgrain. So I guess I'll vote that one NOW. "6 switch light Atari woody". -
LOL, never saw it that way... but that sword is missing a handle.

This is pretty much spot on. You had to have played the game at the time of its release to fully appreciate it and understand the hype. My 8 year old loves it. Yeah, it's always great to play a game right during it's release. Maybe that's part of the allure, that the game is not hard, but not completely easy like Fire Fighter. However sometimes people can play a classic game like Zelda or Adventure (newly in stores) and not like it. In the 80's I never got into ZELDA or even wanted to play it. I did get to play it, and thought it was interesting but nothing that special.

No, they're not identical, but they don't connect in any way which makes even localized sense. In Adventure, with very few exceptions, going north and then south, or east and then west, will leave you where you started (how many exceptions are there other than via the bridge or the castle gates?) The rooms can't be laid out on a plane, but for almost any pair of adjoining rooms, the left wall of one room will match the right wall of the room to its left, the top wall of one room will match the bottom wall of the room above, etc. If the Superman blocks had been arranged so that the colors and shapes corresponded with streets and neighborhoods, that would have improved things greatly, IMHO. As it is, the arrangement just seems random. I think they often do connect. I played it just yesterday and by memorizing certain (not all) screens I was able to find my way around much quicker. Also I think it's better that it is tough to figure because the villans don't shoot you etc, so if the screens had been perfectly set up... would be very easy to map, and would be in general, very easy. Part of the fun is trying to fly around to the right areas.

some pac man tips 1. Vitamins are worth 100 points, eating all the ghosts is worth 300. Those Vitamins score close as much as eating 3 ghosts. So, try to eat your vitamins when possible! 2. Try to eat every ghost in the first few levels... (especially the 1st stage) a good idea is to wait at corners for the ghosts to near you. It's ok if you leave some wafers behind, you can retrieve them later, as the ghosts aren't fast enough to catch up with you, yet. Just remember to make good use of the maze, in dodging these ghosts. 3. A good technique at the start of a level, go right/down and right to the bottom wall... then when the ghosts are nearer, quickly head all the way to the left, then straight up... this can gobble up some good amount of wafers and the ghosts normally will be of track or in the wrong direction. probably a good plan for the 3rd to 6th run through (middle/later points of your game). 4. In the game after you score about 3,000 to 4,000 points... avoid going in straight lines, as the ghosts are very fast now and will catch up to you. Use turns even if it may cost you a life, just keep trying to eat all the wafers and don't worry about eating more then 2 ghosts... with the power pill. 2 eaten ghosts is plenty at this stage. Also don't try to be perfect here if you want to reach over 7,000. 5. If you reach 7,000, or whatever score you feel you cannot beat, it may be a good idea to only use the 4 power pills, and give up on the dots in the maze, if you are running short on lives, you can rack up a nice final score by just running to each of the 4 corners and eating ghosts! Hopefully these tips are helpful.
-
I don't really believe any of them... lol. I'd like to see that with my own eyes, because after about 7,000 points the ghosts move faster then you for sure (on this setting), and the power pills don't last long as the game progresses, sooo how could you possibly get more then 15,000 in this game? You cannot unrun the ghosts after a while, it's not even possible?!
-
Well yes, but what I mean was not a timer to "run out"... but one to count how long it took for you to win the game. That way you could try to beat your best time. Though it's not a big deal or gonna ruin the game without one.

Adventure got it right, those other 2 didn't. Superman is difficult to find your way around because every screen looks identical. E.T. has problems. Howard Scott Warshaw himself said that the pits need help. I totally agree. I disagree, and I'll explain why... Superman, the screens which look similar but I'd hardly call them identical. Add to the challenge of flying around, you zip around fast enough that it doesn't matter much that they can be confusing, you also could map it out, as Advetures screens didn't really make sense either just was easier. One thing Superman has that Adventure doesn't is an actuall lead charecter rather then a "square" and he can either walk or fly, really amazing for 1980. I find both games fun, Adventure and Superman, maybe Adventure a bit more because of the theme and items are more interesting. But Superman in my opinion isn't in the 'wrong'. As for E.T., the journey is partly made up of going under ground (in wells) to find the phone pieces, and the flower. E.T. like Adventure is randomized each time you play, so the game will play different everytime... E.T. may be a bit more frustrating with the WELLS... around, but it's also more challenging with the time clock, finding pieces and the landing pads etc, whereas with Adventure once you get the hang of it, you basically can solve it without a problem. I have fun trying to beat my high scores on E.T.. If E.T. is too frustrating with the Wells, just select game 3, with noone chasing you. People found game 3 on Adventure ... I would think they'd try E.T. that same way (just for different reason) to make the game easier. Howard Scott Warshaw, I'd like to give him a tip of the hat for creating YARS' E.T. and Raiders. 3 unique games which add to the 2600 library as just not another Activision shooter... or by the book Atari maze/pac-man knock offs. I mean we seen plenty of those kinds before and they'd been pretty much perfected. Well, he also or "really" said that he had no regret on E.T. but maybe it would have been better if he placed the (Wells) a little differently so they'd be easier to navigate around. To E.T.'s defense, I can think of many games that can be better if "objects, levels or collision can be worked on to be *better* sometimes it doesn't have to be better.

Funny you mentioned the 'bat', it was messing with me when I played game 3, 1/2 hour ago so I decided to take the damn thing with me to complete my game lol. Here's a pic.
-
Yeah I like E.T. too. Shame it's gotten such a bad rap on the internet. E.T. actually has less technical flaws that Adventure does, but doesn't make many people enjoy E.T. for what is has to offer. I remember finding the Yar's easter egg by accident and saw it fly away. Was awesome... I only found the "Indy" charecter from surfing for easter eggs on websites. That one was tricker to discover without help. In my opinion, I think Superman/E.T. and Adventure are all decent and great games, but not perfect A's 100% or 10/10 marks. Still, I think the programmer/s did nice work with what the little space avaliable had to make an Atari 2600 game. Don't like when gamers (some not all) only praise the same 10 games, like Kaboom!, Berzerk, Adventure etc, but say some games like E.T. or Superman are horrible. Anyway you would think people that love Adventure would also like E.T. Superman at least half-way. At least some do.

Thank u for the info, nukey. I didn't know it wasn't the first easter egg, nor did I know that it was a Superman RIP OFF "joking", but really did Superman come out before Adventure? Here's a few 'highly marked' reviews for adventure. Adventure (Grade A) - Any game where the lead character is a block and it is still fun, is alright in my book. This is the original fantasy game and as close to a video game version of Dungeon & Dragons as was available back then. I still find this game enjoyable today, even though I completed it numerous times. Also the first game with an Easter egg! ---- Overall I don’t care about the spartan graphics, the lack of sound, or the simple plot. I give this game 100% overall because it is one of the three videogames I can play and play without getting bored or frustrated (the other two are Ballblazer and Solaris.) When I play Adventure I almost feel 7 years old again, playing Atari without a care in the world and letting my imagination run wild. Game Data Scores Title Adventure Graphics 50% Publisher Atari Sound/Music 50% Genre Adventure Gameplay 75% System 2600 Control 100% Overall 100% ----- Reader Average Score 94% (38 scores.) Excellent! ----- http://www.videogamecritic.net/2600aa.htm#Adventure Funny how flaws/glitches are overlooked when people LOVE a game, but if it's an overall average or maybe a hated one, suddenly the minor flaws become unacceptable and ruin the whole thing. I'd say the best way to review would to be fair to both sides of a good or bad game. If you really don't like it, explain why it's not fun and not the fact the ship dissapears in Defender or the Ghosts flicker in Pac-man. This isn't a "vital" thing to enjoy a game. Adventure has just proven that...

Atari Commercials with Jack Black & Alan Alda + the Hartman
JacobZu7zu7 replied to JacobZu7zu7's topic in Atari 2600
Yes indeed it is! Thanks for inserting the youtube video for that one. For some reason I messed it up and had to post just the links. -
New personal best for me! 8,954 though only by about 200 points
-
Yes I agree, it's not a missing feature... though would be cool to have a 4th or 5th game which will offer time counter or a score. Or just the very end reviel what game setting you had and a white flag appears, showing you did solve it. However you can run behind the challice and push it into the yellow castle to win and show that you did, with the challice glowing in the room. Though that doesn't prove what game setting you had it on. (Thinking along the lines of HSC) This game is not possible to outbeat anyone on.

Oh I personally "don't mind" the flickering. However, in game reviews online for 2600... grades can be highered or lowerd baised on this fact alone. Defender comes to mind. Which often will it tends to recieve a far too low, D/F 4/10 etc. While Adventure normally gets a perfect mark. I don't think Adventure is at all a bad game, I like it alot. More then I did before now that I gave it a fair chance. The elements the game has is quite "influential" and cutting edge in the day.
