I had tacos for lunch today - where am I supposed to post the pictures now?

I would have expected by now there would be more video's about the system. Basically there is this guy who is watching the other guys video and a developer who has posted a few. There really isn't much posted about it. Also just so people know the video i linked wasn't mine just one i found when searching

  2. A new year! Time to get my rear end into gear and work on some homebrew projects i have left on the backburner.

  3. Am i the only one who doesn't feel the Joust hype? So many reviewers and Atari fans seem to really like the game. Personally i think it's not bad but nothing to write home about either.

Some great replies here, after posting i decided to really sit down and work those physics out. I mean don't get me wrong it's not a bad game at all and i would put it somewhere in the middle for a personal ranking. I understand the appeal of a physics based game and i guess it's all about personal preference. Never knew the game was two player either as never had the game when i was younger and no one i know really likes playing retro games with me. So overall i can see the appeal however like i said personally i would rank it somewhere in the middle for 2600 games.

Having said that and i know it's blasphemy but as a young lad i had both E.T and Yars Revenge. Both games are considered the best and "worst" of all time. It may seem strange but i spent more time playing E.T rather then Yars Revenge. *ducking for cover* Anyway like i said everyone has personal preferences and i enjoyed hearing why many find Joust appealing. Great discussion guys thanks ?

  4. Did my lumber back in at work yesterday, what a fun experience it is getting out of bed...? On the plus side i might get some time to throw into some of the WIP projects i have.

  5. Did the modem ever make it to market? I know the CD Peripheral did

Here is some good info on it.   Seems like it was sold in good enough numbers at least.   Maybe not as many as the CD unit from what I'm gathering.   Heard 50,000 CD units were sold, the modem was probably even less than that.

Suffice to say, I've had a few occasions where they were available in the community, or ebay, and I could have bought one.   Price was not terrible, but mildly inconvenient at the time.

It's an interesting device, Doom would have been alot of fun depending on the latency. It's too bad the Jag never took off as for 1993 it was a powerful system. With the right software and more devs on board the system could have really impressed. Thanks for the link ?

Two player Doom in person is a fun "Let's get through the level before the level crashes" thing.   With a modem it would have been crazy bad.

  6. Does anyone know what CPU the Voyager space probes used? Im assuming the 6502 however cannot find any information about it.

The FAQs above are correct of course.

For the longest time the answer used to be the RCA-1802. Like an internet rumor that wouldn't die.

@Keatah After reading through the second link it does say the Galilio probe used the RCA-1802 on the following page

  7. Dune! on the Genesis is a freaking awesome RTS. Loads of fun considering it's one of the first of that genre. Little clunky and frustrating at times but once you except it for what it is, it's a pretty damn good game for a 16bit console.

      wongojack

Even though they are clunky, it is so great to have those computer conversions to the Genesis

  8. Haven't watched AVGN in probably 10 years now and was watching Mike Matei on a live stream. Is it just me or is the whole c@ck - fvck and all the rest lingo getting old and childish? I mean yeah it was kinda funny back when the whole AVGN thing started. But watching a guy my age sitting there live streaming games winging about everything cursing like a teenager is just cringy and hard to watch. Half of it just sounds like he's putting it on and faked anyway. Really drops the content quality as there is many better non cursing you tubers these days. Im just thinking the whole "angry gamer" thing has ran it's course...

@IntelliMission I couldn't have said it better myself. That was the main reason i stopped watching their videos. There was a popular Sega game (can't remember the game) they had no idea what to do or even really heard about it. Then there was the live stream i recently watched of Mike playing Sega Master System games. He didn't even know what Road Rash was... Not to mention the majority of the time he was mocking the system basically because it wasn't Nintendo. Even though the system is actually more powerful and most ports are more vibrant. It's become clear as day they really arn't gamers other then Nintendo and the 2600 they have mentioned before. It's just too hard to watch fanboys that clearly have no real idea what they're talking about other then their small little bubble. Personally there isn't many systems i don't like, i feel all hardware has it's place and makes the industry what it is. Like you said they're missing out on a massive library of awesome games. Every system has good and bad games. Either way though i really don't care they're missing out. The part that's hard to watch is how they act like teenage fanboys mocking other systems. Those childish one liners about genitals and farts, really makes me cringe and think why am i watching this shit... There really was a giant hole left in the retro community when Mark from CGR stopped making reviews. Atleast youtubers like 'no swear gamer' and 'John Hancock' for example are still producing good content. Anyway that's my rant lol

At least the Irate Gamer had Rob Paulsen and Peter Weller this year. I still prefer Decker Shado, That Long-haired Creepy Guy, The Rageaholic, The Sphere Hunter, Bennett the Sage, Mad Cyborg 2552, and Black Scarab FilmZ, however.

Matei is hilarious, more so than AVGN usually. I recently watched Mike play Fall Guys on cinnemassacre plays and he was freaking out like a little kid. Worth a watch.

  9. Having alot of fun with NBA Live 95 for the Genesis. The game still holds up fairly solid for it's age compared to some the other sports games of the time. I like that there is actually plays and somewhat a simulation rather then sprint and dunk. Actually feels rewarding to score and defend. Good game! Now back to my season...

The game definitely has it's quirks that take awhile to get used to. It's solid though and and pretty amazing how well they programmed the AI to respond to certain situations. I have the SNES cart aswell, packed away somewhere in the back room. I have been playing on the emulator for convenience anyway so might see how the SNES version stacks up to Genesis. Been a good decade since playing the game so i was surprised how well it played. Usually i play NBA Jam or NHL which really play solid as well. I cant speak for Madden as i have it but im Australian and really don't know American football all that well. However i will say International Soccer has unforgivable flaws. It used to be a favorite of mine in the day but the gameplay is pretty bad. There is no real strategy, its just boot the ball towards goals and try to score

      Joe C.

Cool, status update how they compared!

    4. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

@Joe C. Well an update :) I fired up the SNES version and as a mini review here is my findings between the two.

Graphics are pretty much on par, most noticeable differences is obviously the text and slightly more detail of the players with SNES.

Sound well i can't pick a winner they both have the same funky beat that sounds great on either system. It's really preference of whether the player likes that gritty Sega Yamaha chip or Nintendo;s Sony chip. I kind of like the gritty Yamaha sound with alot of games however with Live 95 they both sound great.

Gameplay i will have to give to Nintendo believe it or not, despite the advertising ploy back in the day claiming Sega was the master of sporting games... To begin with i was thrown off by separate buttons having individual functions, unlike Sega having the buttons with two or more functions (like modern games).

Other then that, once used to the controls SNES takes the title imo. There is a dedicated steal button and it actually works. Sega's stealing feature is AI controlled meaning the player needs to position on the opponent and wait for the computer to attempt a steal. SNES you can take a swipe and depending the position and circumstance fouls are called if too aggressive or reaching (works well).

SNES version is really easy unless you toggle the rules settings. The most fun i have had is on a harder difficulty setting, then the game plays more realistic otherwise it's just too easy. SNES also has the issue like mentioned by @retrorussell of bad passes and the ball being thrown off court :( Sega doesn't seam to really have this issue.

Anyway in conclusion id say either consumer would be happy, although if having the choice SNES surprisingly tips the scales imo

  10. Here we go... Laptop failed to boot and was stuck on a white screen. So i forced reboot that worked but was slow to boot. Then the screen had a shuttering effect like when recording at a different framerate. Luckily it's slowly come good for now. It's still has warranty but im shattered as i like this rig. Not sure if i should be taking it in considering the flicker/shuttering has become better :( Nothing worse then having the system set up the way i like it and having to re customize everything again. Doubt they will even except it under warranty as it's hardly noticeable now.

    1. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

Sucks though, i had only had this HP Pavilion rig for a few months now yet my old HP rig lasted me over 10 years without an issue. The other was just slow, screen was fading from old age and outdated. Build quality these days just seems poor TBH even though its fast...

  11. I always get nervous when an ebay seller doesn't leave feedback for the buyer. It's almost like they're not confident in their product and waiting to see what feedback they receive from the buyer... I hope my friggen item is what i wanted and in working order. Too much money to be stuffed around.

"when the seller leaves a feedback and the buyer turns out to complain about trivialities or try to pull a scam?"

That is exactly why I wait for feedback from the buyer before I post feedback as a seller.

    3. jd_1138

      jd_1138

If a seller sells a lot amount of product, the percentage of a-holes pulling a scam will be low, but hey if they want to wait until the buyer leaves a positive before they do, then sure go ahead and wait for that. But the seller should eventually leave positive feedback.

    4. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

All valid points, in my case it was close to a grand and some reassurance would have been nice. Having said that even if they did the transaction could have gone either way. Anyway i left them feedback, now after the fact it really doesn't bother me if they leave feedback. And i think that's the thing, when throwing your cash towards a seller and having zero response. It kind of leaves the buyer sitting there twiddling their fingers for days/weeks wondering if the seller is even sending the product.

Worth every minute ?Although the game is massive it's kind of bitter sweet. There is that sense of accomplishment then the reality it's over like a good movie you never want to end. Having said that there is a few spells i missed along the way so there is some replay ability.

  15. Love my 16bit racers : Test Drive - Brilliant : Nigel Mansell - No worries : Micro Machines - Easy : Road Rash - Now we're talking : Lotus 2 - Punishment! It's funny because i have such fond memories of the game yet it's just so damn hard. It's like Kaboom, where it takes that complete blank state of mind with full concentration to play well.

Its TOUGH!  I played several different versions.  I think I determined the original NES version was the best (aka "easiest"), but still tough ?
The arcade version...you just start off defeated.  lol.

    2. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

Yeah playing the NES port at the moment and it still gets incredibly hard. Stuck on level 3 where the red ships leave burning rubble. Just makes it so hard to repair the forts within the limited time frame.

    3. Wyluli Wolf

      Wyluli Wolf

I was able to get thru level 4 if I recall correctly.  After that....POW!  It's addictive, but I do wish it wasn't so difficult so quickly!  Good luck!

  20. Road Rash 3 - I find the hardest stage to be Brazil and Germany to be one the easiest. Doesn't matter the level Brazil is still the hardest followed by the UK IMO. It's funny because Brazil is the first stage they throw you into unless manually picking another track. It's also the decider as to if your new bike for the level was a bad choice or not. No idea why they did this but damn i get my ass whooped on that stage.

@7800Knight - I think something that helped me-I was aware of the TTG, and had plenty of experience with them, Car Wars, D&D, etc, but because I had never played it on pen and paper, I had no comparison.

There were certainly exceptions, but most similar games were in "unreal" worlds-not that I expect an apocalypse, but it still seemed more "real" than trees with pink and purple leaves, lol!!!

    3. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

@7800Knight I have never played the tabletop version so yeah i have zero expectations. I have gone in to except it for what the game is. I think as @Rogerpoco pointed out the game isn't all that far fetched from reality in alot of ways (besides some obvious elements). Although it does have that PC point and click feel mixed with a console touch so im finding very enjoyable.

I have been playing Crystalis for the NES as well and swapping between the two lately. Very different games but i like both just as much as each other for different reasons. I think Shadowrun just has that unique feel and im liking the storyline so far. Looking forward to the Cyber Matrix element aswell, whenever i get to that point in the game.

I too struggle finding free time these days so it's going to be a long game to complete lol. All good though as it's keeping me interested.

If it's possible we happen to like the same type games(apparently so...), SaGa Frontier, on PS1(being rereleased for the Switch)was one of my favorites, EVER.

I thought it was an unloved/uncared about game, but with the rerelease, I guess not.

Is in something of a Cyberpunk world, but more fantasy than future, really.

You have me wanting to check out ShadowRun again, I have to admit, tho I really only play for high scores now, lol!!!

  22. Sick of assholes on ebay bidding in the last 10 seconds. Happened to me like 4 times now for a friggen flashback 9. @GoldLeader I got the Flashback 9 for $90 off that facebooks listing. So yeah im cheering about that, i hadn't noticed till later that the system is AV rather then HDMI. That's all good though, i have AV input on the TV and it has an SD card slot. So i can't win them all :) Having said that im still yet to plug it in and start updating the firmware and testing my ROM's. Im thinking the AV quality will be clear enough so no biggy. Thanks for the offer though, very thoughtful mate ?

    4. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

All good Gold, AV quality looks a bit average on my TV though. Not sure if it's my TV, the system or im just not used to AV as i haven't another AV TV to test it on. DPC+ ROMs don't seem to work either, however i wasn't able to update the firmware which im guessing due to only having nothing less then a 16gb SD card. Atleast i got the system though haha

  23. So does anyone know what the best Flashback units are for modding? Alot of posts are couple years old so im confused as to what would be the best bet. Also would it be the better choice going with a 7800 flashback? Can they be modded to play both 7800 games and 2600 games?

Cheers Gold!, So im guessing the 9 is the way to go. Of course there is plenty in the States but bugger all in Australia lol. Im also thinking being emulation that the region wouldn't matter too much ie: can play NTSC games aswell

    3. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

They are HDMI out, but I guess I really don't know how/if they play in Australia, like if they output PAL or not...Hmmm...I have no idea there.

    4. wongojack

      wongojack

If "modding" means updating firmware then FB 9 works.  The Flashback 2 and 2+ can be "modded" to add a cartridge slot.  It is kind of a lot of effort and there are some compatibility issues with cartridges, but it works great with the Harmony cart.

  24. So i bought an hobbyist LCD display kit from Ebay. Screen, HDMI connector for RPi4, mounting case, touch pen and screws ect. They sent the mounting case and screws but nothing else... Rather than opening a complaint file i have sent them a message to rectify the issue by just sending me the missing parts. Since then they have dropped the listed item price by $25. Now keep trying to avoid my request by saying they will refund 35% and i can keep the crappy 3d printed mounting case. First time i have had to deal with such a shady transaction and not even sure if it's worth opening a case up through Ebay as it's more of a waste of my time to send back the unwanted parts for a full refund. On top of that now they have changed the items listing price im not sure if the 35% is of their new asking price or what i paid.

      TwentySixHundred

I have and yeah im assuming they're Chinese due to the email header having Asian characters.

That's the biggest issue as the missing parts are the only parts worth anything. The case they sent does have separate listings to buy individually at a fraction of the price.

Im assuming they only want to refund 35% to cover what their local postage costs were. As it was free shipping but that's common here in Australia even if they imported it from China. Due to the trade agreement between the countries.

You could be right about language barrier though, as their emails are very copy and paste style with even quotations at the start and end of message. Probably have no real idea what im actually requesting.

    3. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

I've usually had good luck dealing with the Chinese, but sometimes... weird things...I once got an item, it worked, then they asked if I'd received it, saying some people hadn't gotten theirs or something.   I said Yes, and gave positive feedback.  Then they sent another email asking if I'd received it.  Then another...haha...They probably just still had me on the list or something...

    4. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

First time i have any issues with the Chinese too. It's just this seller seems to want me to give in and just take the partial refund rather than just sending the missing parts. Told them like 4 times to send the parts and are still responding with "sorry what would you like us to do to rectify the issue"... Their listing price is still half price now as to what i paid. No idea why they slashed the price other than maybe they don't actually have the stock on hand.

  25. Still play the 16-bit NHL EA games atleast once a month. As an Australian not knowing the rules perfectly but good enough to have fun. I truly believe these games are timeless and aged well. Perfect balance of seriousness and just humorous fun. Such great games!
