I do like this game I can't wait to try her out once a rom of it becomes available. I hope you also make her work with the CX80 trak-ball as an available option like on Centipede for the 7800. Nicely done, keep up the great work.
Thanks, there is a ROM attached to the first post under the video. CX80 trak-ball support i could probably add, however i don't have one myself, so would need to go off feedback from others. Will have a look into it thanks for the suggestion 👍

So i have added an Baloom, animations and a simple score. Some other tweaks behind the lines yet many more to go. First Baloom is a test to see if i could get away with an 12x16 160b sprite. Not sure if im happy with it as i'd rather the enemies as tallsprites like the player. Just not sure if MARIA will have the time to draw multiple tall enemies along with everything else. My capture software is chopping the top and bottom of the screen which is not the case when playing (probably a setting).

Looks like i miss out.. Always someone comes along and spoils it for the rest. Anyway the screenshots look great and Marco does great work on pixel art. He helped with my project which transformed the look from rather average NES like to TG16 quality.

Well an update with some progress. May not seem like much but it's actually substantial and a major roadblock now out the way.
For awhile i was at a halt due to performance issues with flipping tiles on explosions and rending new tiles. Once a number of sprites were used i would get major slowdown even when rendering over multiple frames. It was to the point that i'd have to render many frames to keep performance making the animation choppy at best.
So after messing around with the rendering loop long enough this project sat on the backburner as one i'd open every now and then, fiddle around, then back to the archive. Well got tired of that and decided to scrap rendering the explosions as tiles and have gone the overlay approach. Atleast for the explosions so it lightened up rendering time reserved for replacing exploded tiles with grass. Worked out very well that i now haven't the issue or slowdown and it renders all tiles needed over 2 frames as opposed to multiple.
With this i have also added detection of what tile is within the blast radius and if destructible or not. So now only breakable blocks will explode and static will remain. Once again, doesn't look like much for a visual aspect however a major opening to move forward onto more filler.
Anyway if you got this far through my waffling, thanks. But probably time to shut up and post a video and ROM. Cheers

Hi everyone, so i wanted to post this a little earlier but was waiting till i had more of the engine sorted. Basically my version of Missile Command for the 7800 like i did with City Defence on the 2600. I haven't focused so much on graphics or sound but more the gameplay and logic. The engine with splash screens ect are in place to later be improved on. Still need to work out a smooth chase algorithm for the player missile to target. Anyway posting it here will give me a place to watch it's progress. Cheers.

Every year i forget about this thread yet pleasantly reminded around New Years. It's like a gift that makes me chuckle when reading the OP. Classic stuff

You're fast James! I only uploaded the video a few hours before you updated the list. Probably release/post a ROM in the New Year, Cheers.

7800 had all the tools aswell and a very small scene developing for it. All I know is with the new ADS extension and all the work the guys put into A7800 emulation helped bring new light to the scene the past few years. I'm no Jag guru and haven't followed the scene, so what I said was just an assumption. Just know a decent IDE and emulator got my interest from a personal perspective.

We already are using an emulator for workflow, ironically named "Virtual Jaguar".
It is not very good emulating commercial games though, but homebrew devs have this working emulator for quite a long time.
So I don't expect devs flooding in suddenly.
Fair enough

An emulator like this should really open up the homebrew scene. Now there is a way to test development without needing actual hardware. Never perfect but those who don't own the real deal can atleast dip their toes in.

7800basic IS well documented if you really want to dip your toes into the 7800. Help is always around on the forum if you ask, however im not a fan of how-to videos. We just end up with an influx of people making 101 clones like the tinkernut bB guide that was on YouTube.
The only way to really learn is to:
a) have the desire to read and learn the language.
b) have an interest that stems past a weekend project.
c) look, listen and ask questions when needed.
d) most importantly experiment.
I find the only real way to learn is getting stuck on a feature and grinding it out till you fully understand where you went wrong. Not all the time however sometimes it's important rather than someone doing it for you.
We have many great artist, composers and testers whiling to give a hand on projects. Always get credited and those collaborators make the finished product really stand out. Many of us devs just suck at art and music so it's nice to have people whiling to work on the projects together.

If you're having issues compiling then post a snapshot of the error or the source. What IDE are you using and have you checked out the FAQ page in RT's site?

Sometimes it's best to just listen, learn and ask questions. Arrogance just hinders the ability to improve ones skills and progress.

Personally i just can't fanboy for the sake of it otherwise i would have been excited about the Ataribox (VCS or whatever they call it now). These days i like all hardware especially that of the golden age. Back in the day you could have the 'same' game and even identical cover art. Yet completely different game concept due to the hardwares strengths and limitations. It's just too cool for me to sit on one side of the fence as i feel i would just be missing out on good games. I love Atari as much as the next however i also love all the systems from Atari 2600 till Playstation 1.
Modern hardware like the xbox and playstation personally i don't hate. They haven't the wow factor of older systems but still got their place. Some games are fun and i play a little as i like racing simulation. I really don't get the rivalry with modern hardware because it's nothing to argue about like back in the day. These days the systems are so on par the games look basically identical when side by side.
Overall i get why people debate and i can see it's part of the hobby. Personally i just can't fan-out on one system as they all have their merits. This is what made them unique and without the competitors the industry would've been boring. 2600, Coleco, Intelivision, 7800, NES, SMS and the list goes on, they're all great in my eyes. They have their quirks and unique features that i love, so i will play multiple versions of the same game if possible

Why not just bring the Master System into the fight? Lets really missmash things up with hardware that all have different strengths. I still don't get why the 7800 vs NES is even a thing... Does it even matter these days? Especially when you can enjoy both for what they are.

Are you going to the directory that holds the 7800 sign program then attempting the write command? I haven't tried to sign anything myself yet, although it looks fairly straight forward. I might have a go later tonight just for kicks. Im assuming by putting both the 7800sign program and the gameROM in same directory then writing within is all it needs.

Im that guy where all consoles are packed away. Just use my PC with emulation hooked up to the lounge TV where it sits behind the TV. Does the trick for me, as it gives the retro fix while keeping everything neat and packed away. Latency isn't really an issue as the TV has 9ms latency when in game mode. Personally i can't notice a difference from the old CRT and OG hardware setup to my emulation setup. Would like to have a room setup just for kicks but doubt that will happen anytime soon.

Seems we are calculating posts to membership ratios. Im sitting fairly pretty at 11years and only 1836posts.
Lets do the math (pun intended)...
365x11=4015
1836/4015=0.457
I thought ratio would be even less as i can go months without posting. Although my early years i posted alot on the 2600HSC.

It is calculated, and something I've never heard a single teenager actually say about themselves.
Instantly gave me flashbacks of the early internet days. Where users would blow out then return the next day saying "sorry my little brother got onto my computer yesterday, it wasn't me". Like anyone would actually believe their story...

Mate really? I put my neck out giving the benefit of the doubt thinking you didn't know any better... Playing the card yourself demonstrates you know your actions full well. I retract my statements.

That's all fair enough, i get it and yes he had been annoying with 50 posts a day along with random conversations not related to the topic whatsoever. I had even mentioned something to him myself, then stood back after finding out he is 14. Personally the fact he is supposedly only 14 (could be younger or older who knows) says to me he would've been lucky to have hair on his nuts 12 months ago. So really he has many years of learning and essentially still a child. Moderation could simmer him down or even just restrict his post abilities to set number a day if he continued. Anyway/

Another user had the right approach by reporting and getting him blocked from their thread. If everyone did the same he would be blocked from all their threads and left to his own. From there you hit ignore and never hear from him again. This is what im trying to explain. It's really easy to deal with these issues in life. Who actually knows what the kids issues are, he could have mental health issues that causes his ADHD like behavior. Personally i just can't argue with a 14 year old kid i have never met with whatever issues he may have. Pleasantly or not, although i seem to be the only one around here with that outlook.

Like i said i don't agree with his forum ethics and behavior. However even in the street face to face if a 14 year old was rude to me i wouldn't even respond. I really feel in this environment the report function works better than getting into an never ending tiff. Admins and moderators have that role for this very reason otherwise what's the point. Also im not siding even though by speaking up it will put me on the left wing. Just think this should be handled by admins and moderators

Thanks Karl, yes you're right with the Bresenham's line algorithm the trajectory looks really weird. Embarrassingly i have tried to implement this feature but struggled getting my head around what's needed to make it work correctly. So there is commented out code i tinker with every so often till i finally get it. I may go with Pat's suggestion of 1-button mode so either can be used. Originally i was trying to leave one spare for if i wanted to add another feature similar Defender's Smart bombs. But i don't think something like Smart bombs would work all that well.
Thanks for the suggestion and i may actually go that route. Personally i like the single launcher because i played MC2600 the most and was one my favorite games on the system. So everytime i try other versions like the Arcade it really throws me off, even though it's how the original game was intended. It's probably should just change it to 1-button mode as that will work well with additional peripherals.
Thanks for the feedback guys, gives some food for thought and helps refine the gameplay 👍
