Stella is a great emulator and can cover you for most of the games played. I use emulation with a logitech game pad, works well for me, well the only tough time is with paddle controller games. Having said all that you can buy cables so you can use paddles/original controllers with Stella. Great thing about HSC is can find some gems you would never had given the time for. It can rearrange your top 10 favorite 2600 games really quickly, also great for knowing what games you might want to buy in physical cartridge form. Anyway welcome to the site

Atari confessions. Confess your sins
TwentySixHundred replied to totallyterrificpants's topic in Atari 2600
1) I never liked the woodies as i got a JR in the mid 80's when i was a kid and was what i knew Atari to be. 2) Owned Berzerk but never played it for years because i was told it wouldn't work as it's a paddle controller game. Turned out the informant actually thought it was Breakout, later i worked out it was a joystick game. 3) Yes im one of those that rated E.T in my top 10 games and really enjoyed it even though i had no real clue how to play it. 4) Never have been all that fazed about Video Olympics (Pong). 5) Reactor is in my top 10 list. 6) I go months not playing a single Atari game then months playing nothing other then Atari. 7) When i was a lad i was jealous of a friend that owned a NES because i wanted Super Mario Bros. Programmed a few terrible Atari games with Batari Basic and was proud of them until i realized how bad they really were. 9) Bought a H.E.S version of Wall Defender thinking it was some incredible rare find. 10) Worst of all i sold my entire Atari collection system, carts, boxes for $20 on Ebay.... when i found the Stella emulator back in 2006 -
E.T. Review From The Video Game Update Newsletter
TwentySixHundred replied to Random Terrain's topic in Atari 2600
Same, E.T was one my favorite games and i never knew or heard anything about it being a "bad" game until mid 2000's on the internet. All it takes is one guy to light the fire then it turns into a raging inferno -
I used a PS3 controller also but for win7 however you need to download a driver such as motionjoy for the PC to recognize the controller. Was an ok set up but now i use two Logitech F310 gamepads for all my emulators, They are only $30 here in Australia andbasically the same as a playstation controller but designed for PC so no need to load drivers and so on. Most the drivers for playstation controllers seemed poorly written and full of adware IMO, also i feel the input lag seems shorter then the playstation controller but that could be all in my head. Goodluck and here is a pic of the controller i use

Where Did You Get Your First Atari 2600 and What Type Was it?
TwentySixHundred replied to TheAtarianGuy's topic in Atari 2600
Got one from my mum for my 5th Birthday in 1988 and was the first system i could call my own, was a very happy lad. Woke up in the morning and un-wraped a 2600Jr long rainbow, along with 3 games. Midnight Magic, Realsports Boxing and Missile Command. Midnight and realsports boxing were actually CIB and knowing me i probably threw the boxes away as soon as i got the game out . As for Missile Command i used to play it at my mums friends house prior and have a sneaking suspicion thats where she got the cart from as it was pre owned and she knew i loved the game. I was kinda lucky though and never a spoiled child but only a few months later of owning the system my mother got a new boyfriend and long story short he gave me around 30 odd games. Great memories -
There is two main arguments either "Pac Man and E.T" (Product of Atari themselves) or "Overly saturated market" from 3rd party titles. Personally i think neither, IMO the system ran it's course! I really don't think there is a system ever produced that didn't have bad titles from the dawn to present of gaming. Even to this day the overly saturated market continues with sub par first person shooters yet the industry still keeps afloat. Thing is the systems themselves have a hype lifespan of around five years give or take a few then consumers loose interest, just as they do with all technology. Dont get me wrong there is many like us that are the exception and continue to cherish our systems for years to come but lets face it we are a small minority. My two cents anyway

I used a Genesis controller alot back in the day and never experienced those bugs, however it was an authentic Sega product not third party. I would recommend an original controller and you should have no issues, especially if there is no turbo/rapid fire features that could be the bug cause. Having said all that i also had a controller like this which had turbo features that worked fine, yet i only used it for the "joystick" screw in attachment feature for games like Ms. Pacman ect. Actually worked really well IMO.

Welcome, yeah sometimes its frustrating trying to beat a personal best or if you take it seriously enough and someone knocks you off the podium However i usually dont take it too serious to the point of raging out, if i feel that rage coming on i put down the controller and accept my PB until the next game. Also i mainly only play as a "side" gig, stress relief type deal. Having said all that and along the lines of how you mentioned "Playing for high scores has a way of quickly making me hate games that I normally love" HSC can also be contrary to that statement as many games you would never consider playing become new favorites -

Sorry to everyone competing, yes i did over look that rule and feel kinda bad. Is all good if you want to scratch my point as it's kind of unfair on the previous players that may have waited. -

Turmoil? -
It seems alot of Activision games run slower on PAL, Megamania was the game that got me thinking. It really is noticeable and the PAL version is alot easier to rack up the score without loosing any ships. Looking into this more indepth the past few days other systems like Nintendo and Sega had titles that ran considerably slower with PAL versions too. I still feel running games like shooters or Kaboom for instance at a slightly slower speed is an advantage, even though the player ship or whatever moves slower along with everything else it gives that advantage when games get to that unbelievably fast pace. Having the split second longer to react makes a huge difference IMO anyway.
-
Had to go with hyperspace only because its what i was used to on the arcade, having said that i dont really like hyperspace and avoid using the power ups.
-
No no no....Not in HSC
-
Yeah i kinda worded that wrong, to clarify im using "cheat" very loosely , many wouldnt even be aware and others only have PAL systems. Was directing it more towards i dont want to give ideas on how to "cheat" within a grey area (loophole). those who may think they have a slight edge by using PAL ROMS rather then NTSC. Im also aware it's just the way it is and every variable can't be eradicated, is more the curiosity side of things
-
Started a thread to see others thoughts on the differences of NTSC and PAL when it comes to high scores from a technical stand point. As far as i know PAL versions take longer to draw a frame due to more scan lines then NTSC. The question, is this an advantage for high scores over NTSC versions? I noticed a few years back when making graphics hacks that Megamania seemed to run @ a slower pace on PAL versions rather then NTSC. After jumping in a few rounds lately for HSC it has sprung to mind again, not overly worried or anything just curious. I use Stella and NTSC ROMs only for HSC but it made me think those running PAL on original systems or Stella could have an advantage over those running/using NTSC? I also don't want anyone to "cheat" so to speak by using PAL versions if this is the case it's just curiosity and for myself i will then state within my highscore posts im using NTSC ROMs from now on. This could be a small overlooked advantage that HSC moderators may not be aware of if the case.
