  1. You did hit the reset switch on the console after powering it on right? Reset usually starts the games as a start button on a playstation controller would. Only later titles had a function for joystick fire start, if you get a title screen come up the game is working you just need to start it :). Also i would look at cleaning the contact pins and cart ROM's if it's been sitting 20 years, there is many tutorials here on how to clean the systems correctly. However the brown patch i am not too sure about, from what i can see it looks like it could be corrosion but not sure.

  2. Had Yars since a young lad so to me the concept is easy, also had E.T as a lad and really enjoyed it as i knew what to do. However we used to read the manuals as a family(mum did lol) to figure these games out, without a manual you have no idea of the vast variations on the cart at the minimum. Yars is fairly straight forward but E.T had 8 directions and a fire button too yet a complete different story.

Sure after some time you understand how it works but with a manual you get complete understanding of what to do. Even games like Star Master and Space Shuttle that use the console switches as functions, you would have no idea without the manual and just fly around shooting at nothing until out of fuel. 2600 had no in game walkthrough tutorials like they have on xbox's nowadays, just a simple ol' manual.

  3. Most the time they break one of the outer pin's because people wiggle the shit out of it while plugging the controller in, thus breaks the outer pins holding the male connecter/socket in place(as shown by zylon). Personally i would buy a soldering iron for $5, some solder, watch a quick tutorial on how to solder and have a few practice runs on an old electrical board you may have laying around from something. Soldering really is not all that hard you just need to get a bit of a feel for it. Will cost around $7 or so for an iron and solder which saves you 20 odd dollars and keeps a system alive, not to mention you will pick up some skills.

  4. Hey I got a hot melt glue gun 2. I can do this mod.. right after that I am going to put a resistor on my air intake temp sensor on my car and increase +500hp.and 300mpg

A! mate with that sort of a mod you gonna need a cone filter, huge wing and a fart cannon so you can be pulled over by cops every time you leave the drive way...... Mainly for performance reasons of course:)

  5. Stella is brilliant, been using it for years and it's pretty much the real deal besides the physical presents of an original Atari. All functions work correctly and you can buy USB adapters of ebay or whatever to plug in original controllers like paddles or keyboards. With emulation there is good and bad emulators, some cycle accurate and replicate the original hardware while others are "hacky" so to speak. After a few years of looking into emulation of all platforms, i believe Stella and the SNES emulator Higan are cycle accurate and replicate the original hardware which then plays the ROMs making them far superior. So in a nutshell you should have no problems with Stella

Choice is yours, at least with an emulator you don't need to lug the system and game carts back and forth to ya shack taking up valuable beer space in the car :)

Edit also make sure you have the latest Stella version 3.9.2 and a decent ROMs pack like the one from ROMHunter at Atarimania

  6. Stella should play all ROM's unless the ROM itself is a bad dump or you are using a very old version of Stella. Personally i would go with Stella on an LCD as you can change/fix the aspect ratio and would make life easier when changing games on a tabletop. Also if you have a PAL system @50hz you may have trouble with some LCD's. IMO for us Aussies the best experience is original hardware on a CRT or Stella as i really dislike original 50hz hardware on a LCD. Im picky though and if the aspect ratio isn't correct it will drive me nuts, anyway if using emulators you could also use MAME for coin-op games. Would look and sound just like the tabletops we had in fish n chip stores during 80-90's :)

    Edit: Welcome aboard

  7. Yeah i was thinking for one you would need some sort of a scroll bar added for long manuals such as Space Shuttle but other then that i assume the code would be similar to the screenshot feature. The charts and uploading packs to Atarimania sound like a really good ideas too, maybe if it were to be implemented expand the feature to include cart.png's and box art tabs ect. I am not to sure how much work it would be or even if have posted the topic in the correct section, feel free to move or send a link to Stephena :)

  8. This is the order i acquired these, however play time on each of the systems overlap as i have always liked to go back and play the classics. Unfortunately for me late gen console gaming is not the same as back in the day so it is classic console or PC gaming for me.

    Atari 2600 -> PC-DOS 286-486 -> NES -> SNES -> PC-Win95 Pentium 1 -> Playstation -> Megadrive(Gen) -> Master System -> PC-Win98 Pentium 3 -> PS2 -> PC-WinXP Pentium 4 various though to AMD945 -> PS3 -> Currently PC-Win7 AMD1100TBE

  9. Hi all, been a while due to work and stuff anyway i am wondering if a game manual tab could be added as a feature? There is screenshot and ROM info features but nothing you can read say a text format game manual in the Stella GUI. Personally i think it would be a nice addition as you can have a read of the manual before playing a game.

As we all know manuals are essential with 2600 games and any feature like the screenshot one makes that nostalgia feeling a little stronger. Unfortunately for me always on the go, my Atari and other systems don't spend much time out the box so emulation does the job for me. If there is a similar feature or a not to difficult way i could add this it would be much appreciated.

  10. Ah yes ok looks to be a hardware problem from what i can see if all the games do the same thing. Have you tried testing it on another TV? Just to rule that side of things out. Personally i couldnt tell you what part of the system has packed up, but im thinking it could be caused from a short. Make sure a nephew or someone hasnt spilt a drink or something on the system creating a short on the main board, open it up and look for sticky residue. If you know it's clean and in good condition then it may unfortunately be a hardware problem.

There is a few members on here that do repairs and they may respond to the post, also if its just a 4 switch woody or something common it may be cheaper getting one off Ebay then repairing. Good luck.

  11. Hm indeed, but it works now! It displays the picture and plays the sound trough the speaker. I had to turn up the brightness and contrast a bit, but it works just fine for now (I guess I have to buy a signal amplifier or build one myself.)

Well good to hear its all sorted out, yeah most CRT TV's will require a scan when any new system is connected via RF

  12. 1 Yes

    2 Aristona (cheap philips brand)

3 Well everything works fine exept for the rf I couldn't get to work since I got the wrong remote, so I cannot scan for channels.

I think I'll just mod my atari so it ouptuts composite video. It provides a nicer picture too.

Well thats the problem you need to scan the station in order to find the Ataris frequency, buy a universal remote
