  1. After looking into it further byuu has mentioned someone had doxed him ,the list of friends and developers from the emulation list he maintained. Was saying they released personal information about his friends leading him to feel responsible. This and health issues is the reason he has given, however from those who seem to know him well are saying he's just being hard on himself. Others have said it's not the first time he's thrown in the towel and returned. From my conclusion after reading one his write ups, it does look like he was at a stale mate. Everything other then the PPU's cycle accurate emulation is complete (the missing piece of the puzzle). And obviously LLE transistor emulation however as he mentioned on another write-up LLE transistor emulation will probably never happen in our lifetime due to the amount of computing power needed. I guess all we can hope for is a breakthrough and his return to finish of cycle accurate emulation of the PPU's. I feel once that's done we can basically say the emulator is 100% cycle accurate. AFAIK transistor level really isn't that important as it's just an event, cycle accuracy and timings of the chips seems to be the most important part. From what i understand of byuu's write-ups. All this talk about SNES development is leading me to wonder what level of accuracy Sour was going for with Mesen. I mean i know it's one the most accurate, but is it anywhere near byuu's LLE level. Off topic and another group all together however this also has my mind ticking about Steve Snake's Kega Fusion emulator. It's 11 years old now and he claimed it was accurate, however the emulation scene nowadays aims for cycle accurate. I highly doubt Fusion was on that level. I feel Genesis emulation really hasn't progressed anywhere near SNES and it's sad. I mean i try these new prommising Genesis emulators that pop up from time to time and the developers just seem to go AWOL shortly after. There isn't many that seem to have the passion and dedication like byuu, Steve Snake and Sour
  2. Swami has some good points, after having a skim through the development build there is alot of "I". You have also mentioned "we are a 100% legitimate business" and not your "first rodeo" however in the dev thread you clearly mention it's your first game. Not trying to rain on your parade im just confused. AFAIK most legit companies would pay the overheads upfront then include a percentage within the sales profits. Just sounds more like it was an idea that arised over a few beers/wines one night to release your homebrew game... Covid times are hard but i have never heard of anyone making decent coin of selling Atari 2600 homebrew. It's usually just a hobby and proud moment for the developer to have the chance of releasing their homebrew in physical form.
  3. I never thought of trying kickstarter for projects, would help get the ball rolling that's for sure
  4. Off topic, however Tanooki rings a bell from Byuu's forum although it may not be you as you mentioned this isn't your original online handle. Personally i would stop by Byuu's forum every so often as a silent reader checking for news ect. Not sure but could be confusing you for 'Tales' a frequent user on the site. Anyway as for the older NES emulation i can't input much. I always knew about it in the 90's yet never delved into emulation seriously until later around mid 2000's And well after trying to log in it looks like Byuu too has quit the emulation scene... I do know there was some politics going on between developers, so in a way it doesn't surprise me if that's the case.
  5. Thanks for the informative reply Mike, yeah i was curious if any remnant parts of sound capabilities remained within MARIA. Like i suspected and you had confirmed they removed everything in later revisions. Would have been interesting if there was traces still left on the chip and if any parts of that were accessible for whatever reason. I really hope Steve gets in touch with you, as his knowledge could really help with further hardware development. Especially with the love and attention the 7800 is receiving these days. His knowledge couldn't be left in better hands then yourself and a few others 👍 Sound is not my strong point at all, however curiosity was getting the better of me 😄
  6. So we all know POKEY and somewhat Gumby however im interested in the sound capabilities that MARIA held (as mentioned in video). Excuse my ignorance but im assuming everything sound related was removed from the MARIA chip in later revisions? If so or not, what sort of capabilities were they hoping/talking about? Im sure it would have been a step above the TIA although how would MARIA stack up against POKEY or Gumby? Or is that how Gumby came to be anyway?
  7. Yeah the slimes look really good, even with the simple pallet swap it signifies each slimes difficulty. Nice colour choices too 👍
  8. So as an avid Mesen user i had been wondering why no further build releases have come through for awhile, thought my auto-updater was having issues. As anyone would i started to search the webs and have found out Sour has decided to sign off the project. AFAIK has mentioned he got burnt out and isn't saying he will never return to the project but it looks very unlikely. Very sad news indeed as this emulator was really solid and perfect for my needs. On the other hand as a homebrew dev myself i know that burnt out feeling all too well and completely understand. That's another great highly accurate emulator to bite the dust. First Steve Snake with Kega Fusion, Byuu is only developing at a snails pace and was obviously burnt out a long time ago. Snes9x development team has really slowed down on new build releases. Now Sour with possibly the best NES emulator going around has burnt out. I do believe these emulators are classed as "good enough" however it's always sad to watch these near perfect projects hit the dust so close to the finish line. Well i shouldn't say finish line as there will always be improvements but you get where im coming from. Hopefully there will be some fresh blood in the future with the same enthusiasm and passion.
  9. Definitely! Matt is one i really should have added to the list. Not sure how it would work but an idea would be to have a 3 way show with the "Tool Creators". So have Fred (if possible), Mike and Matt all on the stream talking about the development tools us homebrew developers use. It would be slightly different, however i still find the tools we use and their creators play a very important part in the homebrew scene. And without the ZPH show we many never get the chance to see such interviews. There is many of us developers that watch the show and have questions along with interest of how the tools themselves are created. Whether that be obstacles, background history, motivation, further development plans, why, what, when and how ect ect. Anyway you bet your bottom dollar id be over the moon to watch them all on the show.
  10. Yeah id really enjoy to see Mike on the show, especially about 7800basic in general. Im that person that likes to read the readme file included with tools and emulators created by the author I once watched an hour long youtube video that was audio only of Steve Snake the creator of Kega Fusion (Genesis Emulator) and was glued to my seat the whole time. Im sure i would have a boatload of pre-show questions that could fill a 3 hour show lol. After all like Karl was saying, 90% of 7800 homebrew wouldn't exist without your hard work 👍
  11. Fred - Batari Mike - Reveng Andrew - Andrew Davie In no particular order just a list of those id like to see.
  12. Awesome piece of hardware, i would order one but i haven't a 7800. Unfortunately where i live is PAL50 land and 7800's are rare, so i just have to make do with emulation. Anyway im happy for the community and hope everyone enjoys their Concerto flash carts 👍
  13. When there is that person IRL that finds out you're into retro/classic gaming. Then proceeds to tell you which 16bit system was better. Im just like no no no don't even talk to me. Just go away! Like that horse hasn't been flogged enough

      wongojack

Surprisingly, I get a lot of "Do you have Pong?"

      And . . . I don't have a Pong machine, so then I seem like the pretender.

    2. GoldLeader

      GoldLeader

^For me PONG was my first game, but that's just luck of the draw...Parents bought that for me IIRC...If I were you, think I'd go with, "No but I have Video Olympics!"

    3. wongojack

      wongojack

Sigh . . . yeah, they don't know what Video Olympics is.  I usually say something like "I have an Asteroids machine."  That works.  I also used to be able to say I owned a pinball machine, but I sold it.  Still gets me through the conversation with the Pong-age fan.

I had tacos for lunch today - where am I supposed to post the pictures now?

    2. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

I would have expected by now there would be more video's about the system. Basically there is this guy who is watching the other guys video and a developer who has posted a few. There really isn't much posted about it. Also just so people know the video i linked wasn't mine just one i found when searching

  15. Well Ghouls and Ghosts on the Genesis done and dusted for my first time. Never made it all the way through before. Finally ticked that box so im a happy camper for the night

    1. Razzie.P

      Razzie.P

Congrats!  I was able to finish it as a kid, but it's been a lot of years.  Didn't that one, when you reach the end, send you back to the start to make you play through the whole thing again with a certain weapon before you can fight the end boss?

    2. Giles N

      Giles N

When I was 17, I got through Super Ghouls n Ghosts for the SNES on hardest difficulty-level with one life.

With all the retro-arrangements, playing it now, I cannot believe how or that I actually did it.

      But I did.

    3. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

@Razzie.P Yeah you need to finish twice for the real ending with the special fireball weapon. The game isn't all that long but rather ultra difficult so im assuming they decided to make that requirement to extend the gameplay. Still a brilliant game though, visually it's beautiful

  16. Rampart! Just so brutal im lost for words

    1. Wyluli Wolf

      Wyluli Wolf

Its TOUGH!  I played several different versions.  I think I determined the original NES version was the best (aka "easiest"), but still tough 😜
The arcade version...you just start off defeated.  lol.

    2. TwentySixHundred

      TwentySixHundred

Yeah playing the NES port at the moment and it still gets incredibly hard. Stuck on level 3 where the red ships leave burning rubble. Just makes it so hard to repair the forts within the limited time frame.

    3. Wyluli Wolf

      Wyluli Wolf

I was able to get thru level 4 if I recall correctly.  After that....POW!  It's addictive, but I do wish it wasn't so difficult so quickly!  Good luck!

  17. Yeah basically because that's what makes subscription more desirable having extra perks. However us longer term members have more privileges then new members. Also us homebrew developers have the ability to edit our original posts in homebrew topics. Having said that i had to ask for permissions for that ability as we are always updating original posts during development stages. Either way New Members have very little privileges for obvious reasons
  18. Yeah i do vaguely remember when you started ADS questioning about 7800basic and bB both using .bas as file extensions and how they would conflict. So ever since i have just manually changed after opening the source of my projects. It's good to see that changing to .78b works as a fix for the moment cheers 👍
  19. Thanks guys, yeah i had to keep changing it back to the 7800 compiler everytime i would reopen my 7800 projects. Thanks @Karl G changing all my projects to .78b did the trick. I had been using the .bas extension for a long time just putting up with it and thought id raise the question. When i would start a new 7800 project they would default to .bas and assumed 7800 and bB shared the same extension.
  20. Hi Matt, im wondering if there is a way to have my 7800 projects open in 7800basic format. The issue im having is everytime i open a project they open default in batari Basic format. Even when i change it to 7800basic the next time i open the project it's batari basic again. Not a massive issue although i have been caught out wondering why my project wont compile. Only after reading the output i notice that it's trying to compile as bB. Im sure it's something simple im doing wrong, thanks
  21. New members cannot. The longer the member the more perks and even more again for subscribers. As for the Firmware, personally i was going to go through the steps. However as a developer i thought it would be a nice substitute system to test my games. Now i have played around with it, i would rather just stick to emulation TBH. The flashback is all packed up and sitting on a shelf in my games room now.
  22. Haven't watched AVGN in probably 10 years now and was watching Mike Matei on a live stream. Is it just me or is the whole [email protected] - fvck and all the rest lingo getting old and childish? I mean yeah it was kinda funny back when the whole AVGN thing started. But watching a guy my age sitting there live streaming games winging about everything cursing like a teenager is just cringy and hard to watch. Half of it just sounds like he's putting it on and faked anyway. Really drops the content quality as there is many better non cursing you tubers these days. Im just thinking the whole "angry gamer" thing has ran it's course...

@IntelliMission I couldn't have said it better myself. That was the main reason i stopped watching their videos. There was a popular Sega game (can't remember the game) they had no idea what to do or even really heard about it. Then there was the live stream i recently watched of Mike playing Sega Master System games. He didn't even know what Road Rash was... Not to mention the majority of the time he was mocking the system basically because it wasn't Nintendo. Even though the system is actually more powerful and most ports are more vibrant. It's become clear as day they really arn't gamers other then Nintendo and the 2600 they have mentioned before. It's just too hard to watch fanboys that clearly have no real idea what they're talking about other then their small little bubble. Personally there isn't many systems i don't like, i feel all hardware has it's place and makes the industry what it is. Like you said they're missing out on a massive library of awesome games. Every system has good and bad games. Either way though i really don't care they're missing out. The part that's hard to watch is how they act like teenage fanboys mocking other systems. Those childish one liners about genitals and farts, really makes me cringe and think why am i watching this shit... There really was a giant hole left in the retro community when Mark from CGR stopped making reviews. Atleast youtubers like 'no swear gamer' and 'John Hancock' for example are still producing good content. Anyway that's my rant lol

    2. SlidellMan

      SlidellMan

At least the Irate Gamer had Rob Paulsen and Peter Weller this year. I still prefer Decker Shado, That Long-haired Creepy Guy, The Rageaholic, The Sphere Hunter, Bennett the Sage, Mad Cyborg 2552, and Black Scarab FilmZ, however.

Matei is hilarious, more so than AVGN usually. I recently watched Mike play Fall Guys on cinnemassacre plays and he was freaking out like a little kid. Worth a watch.

  23. Not sure if it's of any help Karl however i had noticed the same with loading levels in Captain Comic. As they're also loaded into RAM i found there was no need to plot and save the screen after initialization. Switching color pallets on the other hand required an update (pallet update - plot - save). The only work around i had found was to have a codeblock labeled _mainset just before the _mainloop. So after an "x" amount of screens and an pallet update is required then i would loop back to _mainset where the program would update the required pallet colors - plot - savescreen then continue on with the _mainloop. Probably no help as you have noticed this and there is probably better ways to achieve the same thing. Just thought id share my experience and how i went about it.
  24. Thankyou @splendidnut for the links and kind words. That sort of development insight is exactly what i was looking for when creating level design. The amount of useful information in those links is invaluable. Really makes me want to continue on with the project so im going to have a good read through and see if it sparks the fire. I might continue on the side along with City Sim and a few others i have lined up so i don't burn out. Was also thinking about the page scrolling and i guess it's not that bad, however i will need to think more about how enemy AI works so it fits the concept. IE: like the enemies will chase onto the next screen but with a slight pause or something so it's not unfair. (enemies need alot of work) Yeah the "leap of faith" on the moon stage i would call kind of iconic. Both my brother and myself would take turns trying to make the jump. Last time i played i was the same as you and remembered the jump but nailed it first shot 😄. As a young lad we thought it was difficult yet these days it really isn't. Anyway lots of good memories with Captain Comic in the day, see how things go.
  25. I can't help but feel bad for asking about an update before, thanks for taking the time Matt. The work you put in for the community is very much appreciated.
