  1. My condolences for you and the family mate. Worry about your family and yourself first as we're in no rush. Family is most important
  2. The Aliens titlescreen theme is absolutely awesome. In fact as someone fascinated by space and planets, im a sucker for that mysterious planet look. It's that sneak peek of the planet that makes you want to see more. Leaves the questions in the back of my mind "what's planets composition" "what organisms are living there" "is the planet hostile or friendly"... Might sound silly but just makes me want to get a camera and start exploring all the unseen parts of the planet 😄
  3. So i decided to re-upload the latest build i had for those like @splendidnut who hadn't a chance to play around with it. Was playing it myself today and kind of wish i kept at it. It's rough and not much of a game as i never populated the levels with features, items and enemy AI is fairly lackluster. Anyway i had learnt alot about player physics and how to refine the players jumping mechanics. Was something i had always wanted to achieve on the 2600 yet struggled. So there is definitely some positives that came from this project. Another gripe i had with this project was i wanted land based enemies. The issue is the height of captain comics fireball as it would fire overhead. Was thinking of a bouncing fireball like super mario bros. That would arise the similarity issue so i could never think of a way other then using tallsprites. Furthermore i was trying to prevent using any additional enemy sprites larger the 16 pixels high. Anyway the ROM is attached to the first post
  4. I guessing an update with the new 7800basic version is coming 😉 Or should i add a new compiler directory path? No stress
  5. Titlescreen looks brilliant! Really sets the atmosphere of a mysterious 🌎
  6. Awesome update Mike! Many great new features, however im really excited about variables for width and height parameters. Going to have some fun playing around with this 👍
  7. Indeed! Another thanks for sharing and the community working together 👍
  8. Thanks @splendidnut yeah i had worked on ironing out the player physics. Especially when it came to the jumping routine however i did have some more plans to smoothen things out a little more. To be honest i kind of miss working on the project. Had only just completed the first levels layout and was yet to populate and refine item locations then enemy AI. Like i said in a previous post the project was far from a game and needed alot of work. You never know i might pick it up later down the track if i feel screen to screen transitions would be significant enough. Id much rather screen scrolling like the original had. So many other side projects that i haven't posted. The beauty of that is there isn't any expectations or disappointment
  9. Thanks to everyone who had shown interest. There is a few reasons and i guess after seeing that comment it was the straw that broke the camels back. Basically i have had self doubt about the game, for one my biggest gripe is screen to screen transitions. I really feel it's not much of a platformer and lacks that wow appeal when there is no screen scrolling. I know it's possible however im not sure with the engine i have whether it would work. If i managed to implement the feature there would probably be flicker due to fetching alphadata from other banks. I could probably reduce flicker by loading three or more screens at one given time into RAM but there would probably still be flicker or slowdowns. The other reason is lack of originality like mentioned, other then level design. It's not a one for one port so kind of bothers me if im just wasting my time creating a subpar game. It's basically a game i had fond memories of and never noticed it's similarities to Super Mario Bros I just don't know and have self doubts for the reasons i had mentioned above. I may decide to pick it up again although motivation for the project is fairly low at this point. I have a few other projects im having fun with that also lack originality lol. Think that's my problem as i tend to recreate games i have fond memories of. Anyway thanks for the kind words guys 👍
  10. Don't stress, downloads have been removed and there wont be any further public releases of this Captain Comic project...
  11. Love my 16bit racers : Test Drive - Brilliant : Nigel Mansell - No worries : Micro Machines - Easy : Road Rash - Now we're talking : Lotus 2 - Punishment! It's funny because i have such fond memories of the game yet it's just so damn hard. It's like Kaboom, where it takes that complete blank state of mind with full concentration to play well.

A Friend sent it to me in a random "mystery package", was an awesome gift-is a British book detailing some of the evolution of racing games, it's really pretty good if you can find a copy!

  12. So after ripping out an old 16GB SD card from a phone i had laying around i still couldn't update the firmware. It would just crash the system, however using the games pack that Nate uploaded it just loads the ROMs anyway. However i did hear these systems play DPC+ ROMs with no issue although when i placed my DPC+ Homebrew ROMs in the folder it automatically crashes the system when trying to search the SD card. Finding it a bit strange that i don't even get to view the ROMs it just crashes because those DPC+ ROMs are in the folder.
  13. Just got my flashback 9 and trying to flash it with custom firmware. No success yet and i didn't realize the SD card needed to be 8GB or less. Im trying with a 60GB scandisk card and trying to run the firmware it crashes the system. Same thing happens if i just try adding the Game folder the system crashes when selecting the SD reader option. Probably the SD card so i will need to hunt down an 8GB, hopefully that will work. Also im a bit bumbed about the AV quality on my TV, it looks as bad as RF...
  14. Sick of assholes on ebay bidding in the last 10 seconds. Happened to me like 4 times now for a friggen flashback 9. Problem is they're not very common here is Australia and i just wanted one to play my Homebrews on. Urrggg Might just pay the damn $80 in shipping and get one from the states...

@GoldLeader I got the Flashback 9 for $90 off that facebooks listing. So yeah im cheering about that, i hadn't noticed till later that the system is AV rather then HDMI. That's all good though, i have AV input on the TV and it has an SD card slot. So i can't win them all :) Having said that im still yet to plug it in and start updating the firmware and testing my ROM's. Im thinking the AV quality will be clear enough so no biggy. Thanks for the offer though, very thoughtful mate 👍

      No Prob TwentySixHundred!

As I answer this Status Update much later,  What's it been 9 days?   haha...I just noticed this one ;)

All good Gold, AV quality looks a bit average on my TV though. Not sure if it's my TV, the system or im just not used to AV as i haven't another AV TV to test it on. DPC+ ROMs don't seem to work either, however i wasn't able to update the firmware which im guessing due to only having nothing less then a 16gb SD card. Atleast i got the system though haha

  15. So does anyone know what the best Flashback units are for modding? Alot of posts are couple years old so im confused as to what would be the best bet. Also would it be the better choice going with a 7800 flashback? Can they be modded to play both 7800 games and 2600 games?

Cheers Gold!, So im guessing the 9 is the way to go. Of course there is plenty in the States but bugger all in Australia lol. Im also thinking being emulation that the region wouldn't matter too much ie: can play NTSC games aswell

They are HDMI out, but I guess I really don't know how/if they play in Australia, like if they output PAL or not...Hmmm...I have no idea there.

If "modding" means updating firmware then FB 9 works.  The Flashback 2 and 2+ can be "modded" to add a cartridge slot.  It is kind of a lot of effort and there are some compatibility issues with cartridges, but it works great with the Harmony cart.

  16. Am i the only one who doesn't feel the Joust hype? So many reviewers and Atari fans seem to really like the game. Personally i think it's not bad but nothing to write home about either.

      I have gameboy defender/joust cartridge.

I spend more times with defender than joust.

Some great replies here, after posting i decided to really sit down and work those physics out. I mean don't get me wrong it's not a bad game at all and i would put it somewhere in the middle for a personal ranking. I understand the appeal of a physics based game and i guess it's all about personal preference. Never knew the game was two player either as never had the game when i was younger and no one i know really likes playing retro games with me. So overall i can see the appeal however like i said personally i would rank it somewhere in the middle for 2600 games.

Having said that and i know it's blasphemy but as a young lad i had both E.T and Yars Revenge. Both games are considered the best and "worst" of all time. It may seem strange but i spent more time playing E.T rather then Yars Revenge. *ducking for cover* Anyway like i said everyone has personal preferences and i enjoyed hearing why many find Joust appealing. Great discussion guys thanks 👍

  17. Ah ok i see, yeah i usually like to use a couple accurate emulators in a rolling dev stage. A7800 is great and i feel friendly competition among authors drives for more accurate emulation. The GUI's ease of use reminds me of other standalone emulators such as Fusion ect. It's all good whatever direction you take. I will be keeping an eye out as to where this project leads 👍
  18. Just wanted to bump this thread as i enjoy making labels for my 2600 projects. Nowadays im working on projects for the 7800 and would love to see a 7800 label option thrown into the mix. Even though my games don't make it to release in cart form, it's nice to have some labels next to the ROMs.
  19. Thanks i had been using A7800 for awhile now. However i have heard/read alot of good things about Bup and noticed it has recent updates. From what i hear it's fairly on par with A7800 in terms of accuracy 👍 Works great with my homebrew and is nice that pokey is supported especially with bankswitched ROMs (helps motivation with testing one my older projects). Thanks for the continues development of Bup and im looking forward to future releases 👍
  20. It's a strange comparison between machines of the time. Reason i say is because the system was technically 3 years old by the time of official release (almost completed it's hardware lifespan). I used to compare the system to NES and SMS however i hardly think it's fair to go by release dates alone. I mean the hardware was intended to compete against the colecovision in 83. Having said that the system still gives the NES and SMS a run for their money for the sheer fact of the number of sprites Maria can handle (it's a beast). If only the system had a few further tweaks and the pokey chip at the minimum when they decided to re-release the system. Anyway it is what it is and i agree looking back nowadays after the dust has settled, all the bullshit can be put aside. I can now appreciate the system for what it is rather then comparing. Homebrew scene shows the system was hardly pushed to its full potential with the original titles - plus or minus a few.
  21. Im still on the hunt for a 7800, would love to own one. Remarkable machine to say the least
  22. Thanks for adding the Dark UI theme, much appreciated 👍
  23. Cheers mate yeah it was the bilinear filter, i knew it was looking like some sort of filter was being used. Alot of the time with SNES/GEN emulators i switch this option on or off depending on the game. Personally i prefer no filtering with NES and Atari emulators and/or 8bit gaming in general. I can see how filtering could make some 7800 games look alot nicer so i guess it's personal preference. Im assuming Matt has the feature turned off with ADS hence the reason im used to no filtering 👍
  24. Thanks for the explanation mate, yeah it's hard to explain but graphics quality seems to drop. Just looks sharper and brighter, where when running the ROM from a7800 itself it's more blurry/fuzzy and darker. Same 4.0 versions and the graphics settings all seem the same. Even the Fuji logo on boot seems to be degraded. Here is an example ADS a7800 As you can see the a7800 image looks like it's running a filter. Maybe @mksmith has made some tweaks to the built-in ADS emulator?
