  1. I have some mid 80s Compute! magazines. I'll take a look and see if anything pops out.
    Awesome! Thank you very much!

I'm still looking. I also have the complete COMPUTE collection on three DVD's, maybe I will be able to find something there. Sorry it's taking me so long to go through them, but I usually get one out and get about halfway through and then it's "the kids need you" this and "can you help me" that or "I can't move the couch by myself" - sheez, what am I, a father and a husband? oh wait ... yup, I am.

Yes, being a dad sure isn't good for you're spare time. On the other hand it's nice to see the kids play and support them. Just have to find the right balance between kids, wife and hobby. ;)

I'd rather be a good father and husband than have a lot of spare time, because it sure is nice watching the kids grow up into good, decent people. My wife is very supportive of my hobbies. I work in a prison so she understands that it's good for me to have some unwinding time. I don't go out with the guys or drink or do drugs so at least I can involve the family in my hobbies. It's fun watching my six year old play Pac-Man!

  2. I'm going to set up my C64 tomorrow with the fastload cart and my 1571's and see how things work. I will look into the jiffydos option - that intrigues me. Thanks for the info on that.

Good choice jtoubeaux, your C64 probably has a better sounding SID chip (6581) than the 128!

You might want to add the uIEC flashcart drive to your setup, it connects through the drive cable or daisy chains to the 1541/1571 and can mount D64 disk images from the flash.

How do I acquire the flashcart?

  3. Cebus - I love board games. I used to have the Scooby Doo game from the 70's - maybe my Grandma still has it! My kids play the Mickey Mouse Pop-Up game from 1982 all the time (it's a horse race - actually lots of fun).

I used to be heavily involved in 'RISK' tournaments when I worked graveyard shifts at a detention center. It got nasty!

  4. I used my C128 and a single 1571 for years. I put it away about a year ago in favor of a C64 and two 1541's w/JiffyDOS. Mostly because I very, very rarely used 128 mode and I have absolutely no spare parts should anything happen to the C128 or 1571 (and prices for them are getting...stupid). I've also allocated myself much more room for my vintage computers, so space isn't as much of an issue anymore.

Hmmm ... now there is an interesting solution. I would need to get one more 1541 but I think I could find one for about $15 or so if I'm patient. How does JiffyDOS work? I've heard of it but never really looked into it.

  5. Thanks very much for the info. I remember seeing a few Loadstar 128 issues back in the day (I'm always saying that), and yes you are correct about the 80 column monitor/cable. I'm sticking with 40 column for now as I don't really have a need for 80 column at the moment. I specifically remember some bingo program with the animated cage turning around - sound familiar to anyone?

I think I'll put my 128 away and swap for my 64 with the fastload cart. The 'delete' key and the '4($)' key on the 128 do not respond too well and I could use the space on my desk as my Commodore is sharing time with my Atari 800.

I greatly appreciate everyone's assistance here, thanks again.

  7. I keep hoping that I will run across one in a thrift store one of these days ... Shoot, I'd settle for just finding an empty 128 box right now so I can pack up my 128 right!

The C64 fastload cart is pretty compatible, isn't it? I don't remember from back in the day which games it did not work with but I think there were a few - something like Forbidden Forest or Impossible Mission or something like that.

  8. I'd go for the 128 + both 1571's. An Epyx fastload cart will give you faster C64 mode loading, but will always force the machine to boot in C64 mode. A Mach 128 will speed up loading in both modes and is switchable between 64/128, but is somewhat less compatible. There are a tiny number of 128 specific (or enhanced) games, and the 80 column mode is superior for programming and productivity apps. Having two drives hooked up will make copying disks much faster and easier. There are DIP switches on the 1571 so be sure to set one of them to device #9.

Is there a list of 128 enhanced games? I have a bunch of original disks but most of them say 'C64' or 'C64 or 128'.

  9. I believe they do load faster - but do they load faster when the 128 is in 64 mode?

No they don't. Get a fastload cartridge if you want high speed in the C64 mode. I have a cart that actually works with 128 and 64 modes, can't remember who makes it. (or should I say made it)

BTW, I have a 128D and a 1571 but I've never used the 128D. I bought the 128D and it's sat in storage ever since.

I just use the 1571 with my Plus/4 once in a while.

I do have a fast load cart so maybe I can just use that. I'm probably not going to do any programming so the space thing is appealing to me. Thanks for the input.

In storage??? But, but, but ... it's a 128D! Is it the european or American model? Would love to get one someday ... I can dream.
