Is there anyone willing to upgrade my flashback to ultimate? I understand that Byte Knight is not doing it anymore.

Since byteknight no longer responds there is no way to get the ufbi board and without his permission the maker of it wont sell them so there is a lot more work involved in modifying the system so more work involved.

Yes!  So far there are about 40 new home brew games in the 2600, 8-bit, and 7800 sections.  Thanks to Zero Page Homebrew, it's pretty easy to find them, but sometimes box art for these is challenging.  ZPH creates some nice mock-ups and sometimes I just use those.

When I hit 40-ish on the LUFB update I was a little tired out and had been working on a bunch of other stuff to boot.  With the new game import mechanism it's not too bad to add games though, so I now intend to go back for another round.  I guess there may be quite a few more 2600 home brew games that have compete binary available that can be added in.

I mentioned earlier the prosystem emulator for 7800 seems like it's pretty not-compatible with a lot of home brew games.  Some won't start, and some start, but have graphical corruption.  There have been a few updates to the emulator, but what we are running on these is a slightly modded version, so I would need to  grab the new sources and re-integrate the changes.  That's not very hard but another thing on the to-do list before I want to call this done.

I have a broken flashback deck if somebody wants it to try and fix it.

I have the controllers that's why I bought it on eBay even though I knew it was broke

All I ask is that you pay for the shipping and that you're in the US. Because I can't get to a post office but I can have postal pickup come to my house as long as I'm delivering in the U.S.

DM me your address and I'll take care of it next week.

Oh, now that I think about it, I believe it is possible to multiple configurations in one emulator.cfg file, and then when you start a game you can pick which to setting to use.

So you can set the jlp games to use the jlp settings, and the standard games will not make the save file.

But I don't recall if Byte Knight's build hides the menu that allows you to set/change the configuration for the game.

Yes you can do them all in a single emulator.cfg file. Also i have ivoice enabled for everything so i never have to worry about that because it doesn’t affect non ivoice games at all. So i have a normal game configuration and ecs game configuration. I haven’t updated or gotten jlp games so i know nothing about that however

Just got my Ultimate Intellivision Flashback down out of its box. Trying to use it and it just keeps rebooting. Sometimes it gets to the main menu but it will ultimately just reboot.

Any ideas?  Did the Raspberry Pi kick the bucket?

You probably are underpowering it. Use a better power supply.

Since you, are both seeing something similar I'm sure it's real.  It's also worth fixing because adding things by experimenting using /game is a lot easier.  I have a theory and it has to do with the "slots" in the retromenu program we use for the hack.  It's a long story with these slots and such, and since we are hex editing an executable it's not an exact science.  I am pretty sure .zim or .zip (or both) end up using a different libretro core when in game with the .gme extension vs. in a rom folder with the normal extension.  That's because .zim and .zip are still called out in slots, but when you put them in /game with a .gme tacked on it guarantees they fall through into the runcommand.lfb script switch statement to pick the emulation core.   Meaning there are two paths for those two extensions.

Pretty sure I can figure out what's happening with things or just brute force a fix when I have a little time to experiment.  When all the original arcade games were added (they were all one button games, btw) it was on an Atari flashback, and the runcommand is much simpler there, with fewer slots - probably the problem does not exist on those.

Im not even naming them .gme. Im naming them .zip.zim .zia etc in the games folder and they work great in the games folder but no matter what file extension i use in the arcade folder i dont get the same compatibility in a bunch of games.

Thanks for the tips.  I have an old 9pin "Slick Stick" from my Commodore 64.  Will have to check if v2 of the UPCI supports that.

I've spent a lot of time tracking down config files in RetroPie, EmulationStation, and jzintv.  Will look at my notes when I do that.  :)

Yes your commodore stick is the same as an atari 2600 joystick. It will work just fine.

Yes.  Both A and B exhibit the same problem, as do different Flashback controllers.

Ok so two things. Hook up a different type of controller and boot it into a different controller mode. Then put it back into intv fb controller mode. Do it on both ports. See if that fixes it. If not i would open the upci and start inspecting for a cracked solder joint. Also make sure you arent somehow modifying the config file for jzintv.

Did you test on both upci ports?

Also just because it works on your intellivision doesn mean it will work on the upci. In this i mean that the controller ports on the system and upci could be making contact in different locations. I recommend trying contact cleaner on the pins on both the controller and the upci. If that doesnt fix it, try using a 9 pin genesis extension cable and see if it makes better contact with that.

I am having a heck of a time with my Ultimate PC Interface.  Hoping someone can offer some advice.

It worked great for about a year.  Then my controller disc stopped working in the down direction.

Someone recommended I reupload the firmware of the UPCI, which corrected the problem for about a month.

Well, my disc isn't working in the down direction again, and reloading the firmware didn't fix it this time.  :(

(I know the controller works, because thanks to check roms and my original Intellivision II.

Did you test on both upci ports?

Yes I read about needing .gme extensions somewhere. Either on this thread or the archived "somewhere" original thread with a certain banned user who seemed to really drive a lot of the original work. I've followed the rabbit hole that led me here lol

I have been succesful in running games from the /game folder because I did add .gme, just an odd thing how some work in /game as one extension, but not when added to all-games.ini. But the same game might work as another extension in the same .ini. In any case, I'm usually using the /game folder to try roms and see if they work and with what extension so I can add them to the menu later. It's a bit messy, but it all works and I'm very thankful. It's just a weird observation I'm making but since it usually works as something else anyway, I'm not concerned.

Its weird, a lot of mame roms work great in games folder and dont work in the arcade folder at all or they are really laggy in the arcade folder. And ive renamed them every possible file extension the arcade folder recognizes and no fixing it. I have found other rom version/region that fixed most of them in arcade folder but no real luck with some of the cps3 roms.

I checked the usual locations locally here, no luck.  Most years Dollar General stores have them out at Thanksgiving day or Black Friday, but this year they really didn't have much of the usual seasonal merchandise out.  If I see them out in the Southern US, I will post here.  I would like to get the Gold Edition this year.  :)

I stated the u.s. release date previously. It was listed as either december 15th or 19th. I forget which.

Bought a set of Atari paddles, but could never get them to work even close to properly on either the 9 or X.

Most the time they would give the message about plugging in the joystick. Once in a while, they would seem to pretty much randomly shoot the paddle to the other side of the screen or something.

Have no familiarity or facility with resistors, soldering, or anything like that.

Don't have one of the new systems, was just considering getting one if I could use it for *all* the paddle games ... until I discovered that almost nobody even seems to know the anniversary edition exists. Don't know if I could get a hold of one, anyway.

So without swapping resistors or modifying your paddles, they wont work on an afb 9. On the x if they dont work, its a problem with your paddles and they probably need a proper cleaning. For the paddles to work like an actual atari on the x it needs to be modified with some new resistors as a state above.

It's entirely depending on what atGames did with these.  I'm assuming the hardware inside is unchanged from an X.  So, they may have included the support for "External USB Drive" games placed in a /Game folder out of the box.  It would still be done by using the USB splitter approach that worked for the Flashback X.   If anyone owns one of the 50th Anniversary units and is willing to try it, it would be greatly appreciated!  Just add the drive with a file in a /Game folder and even with stock fimrware you should see the USB menu item in the lower left light up.

DO NOT apply any firmware update for an X to one of these - it could be the end of your nice mini 2600.

The other thing someone could do is dump the Firmware and post it someplace.  We could then tell if they re-used some parts of the FBX firmware exactly by comparing to older dumps.  atGames can change the whole personality and content of the device by modifying only some content in the /rom and /emulator partitions, and that would be the most cost effective way to get a new revision of the product out.  On the other hand, they may have rebuilt things to tweak performance or some other detail in some way, or even make adding games harder.  Who knows!

If they become available at a reasonable price here in the US, I'll pick one up and do those things.

BTW, original paddles work OK for me on the X, though not like on a real 2600.  I thought the 9 had specific incompatibility with the original paddles that were improved on the X?

So there is going to be 4 resistors around 500k ohms that need to be changed to 100k ohm resistor to correct the problem. Afb 9 never got compatible paddles. I changed the 5k ohm resistors to 100k ohm resistors to make them properly compatible. Im 1700 miles away from home but i ordered 200 100k ohm resistors to send people resistors to fix their 9/x/50th and not the really tiny resistors that are impossible to solder to either. So mid December i will send you resistors for your systems if you want them.

@pimpmaul69 BTW, I got all the parts I think I need to mod an FB1 7800 style controller for the FBX two-button 7800 games.  I mentioned this to some EE folks I know and they think you can get single-layer PCBs done so cheap now that it could be possible to do a modified PCB for the controllers in the $20 range.  So like adding through holes for soldering the diodes and making the traces match what is needed for the modded version.  I have never done one, but with help from these folks I think it could be possible.   Could you pass along any other info. you have?  It's probably a winter project for me, so no hurry.  If I need to just study the pictures you posted before I can do that also.

so i was correct in my work on all file extensions but zip. that is because its config file saved in the mame 2003 extreme cfg folder. now i have a weird issue. using .zin fb neo file ( i have an fb neo romset that has been fully compatible with neo fb) so running street fighter 3 3rd strike, it plays no issues in the game folder. playing from arcade folder with all-games.ini, it wont boot. using different roms from the same  roms set it boots but it locks up almost immediately. but all play from game folder just fine. do you know why that would happen? also i cant get redearth to work cause it needs chd files but i dont know where and how the chd files need to be placed on system. as for the afb1 controller i will make a schematic for you.

I understand... I too prefer options, as it is better for the market most of the time.

I wonder if the units without wireless controllers still have the wireless receiver hardware inside of them to work with wireless controllers from earlier models.  I might test this as I do have models that came with them.

If so, maybe you can trade me your wired for my wireless controllers. :)

    MrBlackCat

They do not. The antenna is there and solder pads but no circuitry. And it’s just different enough, that you wouldn’t be able to swap the parts out from an afb 9 gold.
