Nice breakdown! I think the 4-ply may do better, level 5 is gives Video Chess 10-12 minutes to move, I think it goes deeper than 3 moves ahead on 5.

Great questions! Yes the "bad" display is what gives them more artifact colors, the extra chroma in the signal, the Jr has artifact colors too but they don't display as strongly because the video is "better" than the earlier models with less chroma. It's an NTSC only phennomena as well so PAL Televisions won't display it unless they have a mode to emulate the NTSC color spec which some sets may have. This is unfortunate because many colorful games that rely on artifacting alone were completely black and white on PAL Televisions. I do see Artifact colors on my Plasma display too over the RF connection with NTSC but they are best on CRT. In the images the closeness of thin parallel, double and standalone horizontal lines will form artifact colors at certain thicknesses and bloom at vertices; comparing the pic I posted of the emu zoomed against the artifacting pic should show all the places where this occurs - specific patterns can be created to bring out several distinct artifact colors; I will see if I can find a BW copy of the 8 color artifact pic I posted earlier. There is support for 4 of those color patterns in the CoCo emu and in Altira, but it is possible to support even more artifact colors, would be cool to see this support in Stella as well.

Sure I will take a pic with my phone cam tonight when it's dark, playing the latest version next! Yes if your Jr has RF I'd like to see the difference. When they first added composite to the CoCo they lost the artifact colors and had to redo it to add the extra chroma the RF has.

Do you have a composite mod or RF?

This board is even prettier on my Vader with more artifact color - folks with an older Atari, RF and and an NTSC Television are in for a treat! I played another game last night - improving play over previous version, still losing position and saw some confusion over moves like Knights forking only 2 or 3 deep.

No I didn't actually play Video Chess against the 4ply, just a comparison from playing them both, I think an actual match would be interesting to see. Very cool, I'm about to play this one.

That would be cool to see I would suggest Video Chess Level 5 against the latest version... which I still haven't played but am planning to play later tonight. Yes very relevant - Peter Jennings 1K and later 2K MicroChess (the engine used in TRs-80 4K Color Chess) is pretty good, but doesn't compare to Ron's larger 4K Chess Challenger 77 code, which also edges out Video Chess imo but it's close.

Yes this matches what I just saw playing a full game with the 4ply from 20200406 - it was very strong in some spots but inconsistent - did some very strange things here: An unknown piece type was created on B7, think it moved onto it's own piece when it got confused. Then the CPU behaved more erratically, finally cheating to take my queen when it's King was in check, near mate and unavoidable so it's a situation most real players would knock their King over - instead that angry Queen broke the law and took my Queen - I like this version I'm renaming it AngryQueenChess in my Chess folder. I'm playing Video Chess on Level 5 for a comparison, then I'm going to try the 4-ply Q version you just posted next! Graphics: It would be interesting if the set allows you to see the artifacting - probably so if it allows the NTSC colors to be displayed; it's the NTSC color spec errors (not as good as PAL) that allows for artifact colors to be created. When I wrote games for the CoCo in the 80's we made the games colorful when they were only BW but Europe only saw BW with PAL and RGB monitors - the attached image is black and white showing the extent possible with NTSC artifacting; you have awesome color markup with the pattern you created surfacing the artifact colors - imo it's worth it for people to get an NTSC Television who like Chess just to see this game. One issue with everyone being able to see the artifact colors @Bill Loguidice and Boisey can probably explain better (having written a book about it) is that they can be lost with a composite mod which many people like, and not all Atari models are equal in rendering them - I will hook up my Vader tonight which displays even richer artifact colors than my Jr, more like a CoCo, and take another pic with the latest version to show the difference. (EDIT: Note - the pic of the newer board above shows artifact colors, not the older version shown below)

Played the 3ply without the algorithm - Played better than the algorithm version of the 4ply! I'm trying the 4ply without the algorithm next Pawn en-passante was not allowed onto the red square, didn't check if you added that already - this was the 20200406 3ply version: Also noticed the artifact colors were missing in this version, the design changes you made to the pieces brought them out - I loaded the latest version up afterwards to check: Btw do you have a PAL or NTSC TV? I'm guessing PAL in which case you cannot see these extra colors that are being created but they look fantastic, hope you keep the latest board design.

Here is a better Night pic of the board with more contrast, the pixels blend really softly on CRT and the green hilights on the knights and rooks and the pawns and the Bishops from artifacting - CRT is really cool, I put a pic of the emulated version next to it which also looks good but does not match the Real Television experience, this is why I love CRT's: Gameplay update - I wanted to play another game but waited for it to get dark to get this shot, this was unexpected - the CPU gave away it's Queen for a pawn which made sense because the Queen was trapped, but it did so after doing a pawn attack on the left when it should only have had to look 3 deep at most to see the Queen getting trapped. I am going to play the 3ply version now without the algorithm and the 4ply next that takes longer and will give you more feedback on the differences I can see.

Thanks Voxel, that is my favorite CRT! I hope the camera dries out so I can take a better pic of the board. The PC is actually in the pic on the right - it's a Sony VIAO U I ordered from Japan in 2001 to get a larger HD size; I've kept it powered on nearly continuously for 20 years, it has a speedstep mobile pentium that slows down and runs cooler so you don't have to turn it off.

Sure, I was just playing a fun game! Here are some Chess details too on the gameplay: The first pic shows I was able to chase the latest 4ply version around making it lose several moves using classic play, it's my move now, the red cursor shows where I will put my pawn. Before the algorithm I thought was short circuiting (still do - I'm looking at this only as a player) I had to play hyper modern to make it mess up; It's only losing positioning with the classic play, but that adds up - it plays impressively well after it handcuffs itself, better if it does not allow losing ground like that - perhaps that is where the algorithm could be missing what the longer timed 4x was seeing by taking longer? The next pic is a bit clearer and shows the opening move, third pic shows my setup - points for anyone who can identify all of the systems and devices in the pic! My camera is still a bit blurry, fell into the water recently. it's a Kodak from 20 years ago so it's pretty durable - I put it in my Sauna to dry it - I can probably get a better pic tonight when it's dark and it really glows Jedi Chess: I'm able to move by not looking at the screen when it rolls (Jedi Chess - close my eyes as soon as I select a piece) but it's tricky when I hit a diagonal by accident (4-way detection is better imo) and have to look. Jedi Chess actually adds another fun element to the game. This Chess program is really awesome! I've got a Chess folder on my UNOCart with this, Video Chess and @nanochess's awesome tiny Chess implementations - I hope NanoChess joins in this discussion on the Chess move mechanics and also hoping to see his next engine upgrade for the VCS too!

This looks gorgeous on CRT filling the whole Televison with glowing saturated colors that bleed beautifully together making the board one of the best representations ever! I really need to take a picture, it's completely different than on my LCD under Stella - awesome example of what we need to reach for in emulation. Gameplay - I was playing an awesome game, just when I thought I was chasing the CPU around it recovered with excellent moves - I couldn't finish the game though: The display is stable when I'm moving the cursor around but as soon as I select a piece it rolls - one selection rolled so bad I couldn't see where to put the piece to continute the game - either to put it back where it was or where I had intended to move it. My TV is one of those "right on the spec" models that rolls if the scanline count wavers by 1 - it's stable when I'm moving just the cursor around, please tighten it so I can play - I am spoiled now and never playing this on LCD again after seeing how it looks on CRT! I got my UNO cart right away from the Brewing Academy - awesome device, so's the Harmony it just wouldn't play this game. Also got my replacement Power adapter right away from 8-bit Classics - I'll be playing Archon on my 800XL while I wait for you to fix the scanline count - this game makes me feel like an ordinary user waiting on the programmer - I love it!

This is interesting; I'm not sure how well it will do compared to the version without, falling apart not just in the endgame but anywhere playing Hyper modern strategy; attack, sacrifice for position, trade everything immediately like Bobby Fischer: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Game_of_the_Century_(chess) The 4 ply is really solid I haven't gotten to the slow 5-ply or the 3-ply yet but will try this version to compare first - can you make a fast version of the 5-ply with this idea? I'd like to compare that to the 4 ply with/without the scenario. btw just ordered a UNOCart to play this Chess on my Atari with a real CRT

I haven't tried the 3 ply version yet but I will try it after the 5 ply which I am about to play - thank you! I usually play Video Chess on the setting where it takes up to 10 minutes to move, level 4 or 6 I think. Taking longer for Video Chess doesn't seem to improve it's Chess game further and I start to lose continuity.I rate Video Chess at 1400 which is a good player similar to the 1977 Fidelity Chess Challenger; I move in about 10 seconds or less when letting Video Chess wait 10 minutes for a challenging game. I have to take my time with your engine which is awesome - I need to play many more games to let you know the rating This game is a good reason to get an upgraded Flashcart - I'm guessing it will run on both the Encore and the UNO since it is pure 6502?

Awesome implementation Andrew! The 4-ply engine beats Video Chess engine hands down, which is also impressive. This is a challenging game - love the black screen between moves. Can you make this even more powerful with a 5 or 6 ply?? (don't mind waiting up to 7 minutes between moves). I tried to play this on CRT with the Harmony flashcart but the screen went blank - do I need to upgrade the BIOS or get a new flashcart?
  17. Thank you Colleton, great Atari support site - I ordered that power supply
  18. Thank you Doctor - I was aware of the C64 power supply issues but I thought the A8 was more stable. Glad the XL has no damage I will pick up whatever power supply I can find besides the ingot.
  19. ... Agent has a Date when he wakes up 25 years later. Hospital Recovery Room scene : The famous Elevator fight scene is coming up next in pre-release #2 when Rogers powers up after drinking the Nazi Super Soldier Serum! Movie vs real-life Differences in the game: Elevator Action in the Hospital Room There is more action In this realistic adaptation of the genre because the awesome RIOT Gear fight scene in the Elevator happens right in the Recovery ward too, just like the fight scene in Timecop 😎
  20. Awesome! I tried holding down Option and it worked - my 800 starts with or without option and plays games again now BUT - There is an annoying loud buzz and a blue bar slowly travels up all screens - possible I messed up the PS and have interference or something else? Before it showed just the blue bar in the center of the screen. I'm not sure. I have an AtGames joystick plugged in, the regular kind with no extra buttons. I did use a Sega pad a while back and left it plugged in like that overnight.
  21. Right as I was about to play another round; my 800XL had been on for 24 hours with just Rainbow Walker, it's a fun game. Mostly Rainbow Walker was in demo mode, when I wasn't playing but now my Atari gives off a band midway down the screen of blue luminescence, that's it. I've been playing it a lot lately and did the same thing with Archon, Gauntlet and Defender so my XL was probably on for a few days with little off time - I've done this with my VCS and C64 too and never had an issue besides blowing the PSU both. Is this likely what's happened again, or is it a chip failure within the machine?
  22. Hi vcsrocks this is the definitely right forum for your thread. The dev kit sounds excellent because you can create 2K and 4K carts and produce them farily easily. If you want full support for BASIC it gets very difficult - A Harmony cart supports all of the mappers for bB games using a complex setup with an ARM. The UNO cart is another BASIC player that tubocharges the SuperCharger, enabling 9 MB of BASIC goodness or a 1.5MB compiled BASIC file specifically. Nobody is putting that on an EPROM anytime soon it's the theoretical limit but it's a cool to see the technology implemented to turbocharge the BASIC mappers. MemberAtarian and Sebastian have a very realistic approach to enabling large 64k games with SARA support. This approach should not even require an ARM from the engineer to implement. Many amazing games can be developed with the kit you posted - 4K is alot of fun in BASIC or Assembly
  23. It works great on Windows 10, but with my Fluid City Sillyventure Game/Demo you can see the occasional frame stutter Karl is talking about on both the Retron77 community build and Flashback 9 Linux builds - no screen tearing on either unit just a frame stutter once in awhile. Hope the game is helpful finding it, it's noticeable playing Fluid City because gameplay depends on a constant frame rate in order for the player to have a chance to achieve the precise timing to beat the game.
